Research from the past ten years shows that almost half of all people getting treated for prescription painkiller abuse have some kind of mental health diagnosis. In particular, young people tend to fall into drug abuse due to stressors common around that time and fluctuating hormones. 

But how exactly are mental health disorders and substance addiction connected? Do mental health problems cause substance abuse, or is it the other way around?

Here’s some important information about the link between mental health and drug and alcohol addiction.

How Mental Health Disorders Affect Addiction

First, it’s important to understand how mental health disorders may create addictive reactions and personalities. After all, not everyone who drinks alcohol becomes an alcoholic. A study conducted by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) found that individuals with mental illness are two to four times more likely to struggle with addiction than the general population

Mental health disorders may make someone more prone to addictive behaviors. Depression and anxiety are two major factors that may lead to substance abuse. Additionally, it may be more difficult for someone to stop an addiction when they struggle to achieve emotional equilibrium.

More Susceptible to Addictive Behaviors

Research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that individuals with untreated mental illness are more likely to experience a relapse in their addiction treatment. Certain mental health issues make people more likely to engage in addictive behaviors. For example, people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may turn to drugs or alcohol as a way to relieve their stress. It’s common to find PTSD paired with alcoholism, making it much more challenging to treat. 

Borderline Personality Disorder is another mental health disorder known for addictions. Addiction is one of the criteria that can lead to a BPD diagnosis. 

Depression and Anxiety Encouraging an Escape

Individuals that suffer from constant depression and anxiety also may turn to substance abuse as a way to dull or escape their emotions.

Alcohol can make you feel less relaxed and more confident. It also can be a way to loosen yourself up for social situations. However, those feelings may quickly sour, and continuous heavy drinking could eventually take a toll on your body and liver. 

The same goes for recreational drugs that offer a high feeling. It’s nice to escape from your feelings, but that feeling eventually ends. You may need to constantly chase that high, which could negatively affect your health and bank account. 

Difficulty Regulating Emotions or Dependence

It’s not uncommon for people with mental health issues to struggle with regulating their fluctuating emotions. Neurotypical people may be able to de-stress by jogging or listening to music. However, depression may last for long periods without an end in sight. 

When you struggle to manage how you feel, it’s easy to turn to some kind of substance to improve your mood. 

How Addiction Affects Mental Health Disorders

Substance abuse has been shown to have a profound negative impact on an individual’s mental health. Research has demonstrated that excessive alcohol or opioid use can exacerbate symptoms of depression and negatively affect the management of pre-existing mental health conditions.

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) reports that individuals with addiction are at a higher risk of developing depression, anxiety, and other co-occurring mental health disorders. This highlights the importance of addressing substance abuse in individuals with mental health disorders, as it can have a detrimental effect on their overall well-being.

Changes in Your Brain Chemistry

Regular drug use or abuse can lead to imbalances in the brain’s natural chemistry, as highlighted by studies such as “Neurobiological Advances from the Brain Disease Model of Addiction” (Volkow et al., 2016). Drugs of abuse can cause a shortcut to the brain’s reward system by flooding the nucleus accumbens with dopamine, leading to addiction (Volkow et al., 2016).

Chronic drug exposure can also result in decreased dopamine release and increased opioid peptide release, leading to hedonic homeostatic dysregulation (Koob & Le Moal, 1997). These changes can cause severe withdrawal symptoms when the individual is not actively using drugs, which can drive them to use them excessively again (Volkow et al., 2016; Koob & Le Moal, 1997).

May Create Negative Feelings

Suffering from addiction, or even the process of recovering from it, may create a lot of negative feelings that could make other mental health disorders worse. 

For example, you may feel you can’t date due to your recovery. This could lead to the isolation that exacerbates your feelings of loneliness. 

Using certain medications can result in more severe emotional fluctuations. Trying to stop your addiction could only worsen things until you’ve worked through any withdrawal symptoms. 

You Never Learn Proper Coping Mechanisms

One of the most significant issues with substance abuse is that it is often used as an alternative to therapy or other healthy behaviors like real self-care. A drug of choice may provide immediate relief. However, that relief usually does not last, and the drug must be utilized constantly with possibly diminishing results. 

Factors That Affect Both Mental Health and Addiction

Many overlapping factors can result in substance abuse, mental illness, or both. These include genetic vulnerabilities, environmental influences, and stress. 

Some individuals are more vulnerable to both substance abuse and mental health disorders. They may have more addictive personalities or unbalanced brain chemistry. 

Others develop these unhealthy habits due to their environment. A negative environment could lead to more stress and the pursuit of ways to cope with that stress. Some individuals have suffered severe trauma or adverse childhood experiences that continue to affect them into adulthood. 

While it’s difficult to treat these two disorders simultaneously, it’s not impossible. It’s possible to acquire a dual diagnosis. 

A dual diagnosis is someone with both a mental disorder and a substance problem. Treating both of these issues may require behavioral therapies and prescribed medication.

Support groups can also serve as a way to get tips and share your experiences. You can also get support from mentors who can help you heal.

How Can You Become a Drug and Alcohol Counselor?

If you want to choose this career path, there are certain things you will need to do. Every state will have different requirements, but there are essential steps to follow.

Drug and alcohol counseling may require you to get a college degree. Some states require you to complete a certificate program in order to enter the field, while other states may require a master’s degree in the clinical psychology discipline.

Depending on the area that you are interested in, you can also get other degrees. A minimum of 255 hours of an internship (such as in California)  is also often required, with some states requiring more.

Supervision requirements also mean you could need 2,000 to 4,000 supervised clinical hours. Each state is different, but some hours are required to enter the field.

You may also need to pass an exam to work in the field. Once you have completed all the steps required in your state, you can start looking for work.

There are many electrical jobs out there, and the industry needs people to fill them.

The need for electrical trainees is in demand, so getting into the field at this time should be a good opportunity for new entries. In order to enter the field, you must take an electrical training program or join an apprenticeship program.  These are the requirements in California in order to work in the electrical field. 

Keep reading to find out what you should look for when deciding which college to consider attending in California.

Pick a School that is Approved by the State of California

Students doing well in their electrical training courses usually reflect positively on the school. Before enrolling, determine what percentage of students have successfully completed the course.

To ensure you’re dealing with a quality training provider, check if the school is accredited.  An accrediting agency reviews the institution’s curriculum and program outcomes and determines if the coursework meets various educational standards.

Schools must be approved for the whole curriculum by the California Department of Consumer Affairs, Division of Industrial Relations in order to issue Training Cards (T-Cards) for its students so students and graduates can work in entry-level electrical positions.

InterCoast Colleges is a state-approved Electrician Trainee (ET) Program that offers California’s Electrical Trainee Program. This program is designed to help individuals become certified electricians by providing them with the necessary training and education. The program combines hands-on experience with classroom instruction to ensure that participants meet the state’s high standards for electrical safety and competency. Participants receive both practical and theoretical knowledge and are required to complete a minimum of 8,000 hours of on-the-job training and 720 hours of related classroom instruction. Upon completing the program, trainees are able to take the California state certification exam and officially become licensed electricians.

Fees

While price isn’t always an indicator of quality, it’s good to know that you can expect some value in return for your money. The most important thing about the cost of the program is to verify that the tuition and fees are transparent. The total cost should include all charges, including any associated materials and the registration fee.

You should also be able to get a breakdown of what the total covers and an outline of how these costs will be covered. This will help you make an informed decision about whether the price is worth it.

Training Techniques

Ask whether the training is hands-on or theoretical. A good course should include hands-on lab training. That way, you can apply what you have learned in real-life scenarios.

If the program is only theory-based, it might not give you what you need. Courses like these are more suitable for experienced electricians who want to update their safety and code knowledge.  All programs must provide students with CalOsha safety training and CPR.

Job Placement Assistance

Ask about the type of jobs graduates are accepting. A reputable training provider should be able to name at least one company that hires its students. Also, ask how long it takes the average student to receive placement assistance after completing the program.

This information should give you a good idea of how well the program prepares students for landing jobs.

If the school offers job placement assistance, there’s no guarantee that you’ll be chosen. After completing your program, you should take steps to find a job by applying directly to companies or working closely with your school to find employment, including helping students build resumes and gain field experience, which could help in your job search.

Instructors

Find out what kind of experience and education the instructors have. The instructors will need to have a certain number of years in the industry or possess a specific license. You can ask about the qualifications of the instructors, and even ask to meet with them before enrolling.  You can ask them how long they have been teaching and what type of specific training in theory and practice. 

You will likely want an instructor who has been teaching for several years as they will likely provide students with a strong learning experience.

Equipment

Ask the school if you can take a tour of the equipment lab to see if they have up-to-date equipment, tools, and materials for learning. The equipment doesn’t have to be expensive or new, but it should perform well and meet learning objectives.

Read Online Reviews

Before deciding on a course, it’s good to find out what previous students have had to say. If you see that most people haven’t been satisfied with the training course or that they wouldn’t recommend it to others, ask the school questions about the comments and perhaps the school can provide additional information.

Schools with positive ratings are possibly more likely to provide a better educational experience. If you can’t find reviews online, consider contacting the school’s support team to see if they have any testimonials from former students. Or, ask to observe classes before committing to the program.

Course Content

Look at the course outline and see what topics they cover. If most of the topics aren’t relevant to your field, the course may not be as helpful as you had hoped. For example, if you want to do electrical and solar, but find that the courses do not include training in both areas, maybe this is not the right program for you.  Visit multiple schools before making your final decision. 

It’s also important to look at how much time the school allocates for each section. If there’s too much material and not enough time to cover it all, you could feel frustrated or overwhelmed.

Drug abuse has a ripple effect that spreads widely from the addict to their friends and family to their coworkers and beyond. When you help someone overcome drug addiction, you contribute positively to that ripple effect.

An addiction counselor will not only help the one person who needs help the most, the addict, but they could also help the addict’s friends and family members, coworkers, and everyone else that the addict has affected.

In short, you might make a huge difference in many people’s lives by helping just one person. 

But how does one become an addiction counselor? If you have a knack for listening and giving people the hard truth, you may have a future in addiction counseling. 

By the time you finish reading this article, you should understand the basic steps to becoming an addiction counselor. 

1. Know What an Addiction Counselor Does

An addiction counselor works with addicts to help them overcome their addiction. They take classes focused on alcohol and drug counseling studies to gain the skills, methods, and techniques that help their clients find success. 

Drug addiction counselors support their patients through a variety of methods. Here are a few of the common tasks for a drug addiction counselor: 

• Evaluate the extent of a patient’s addiction.
• Discuss a patient’s alcohol and drug use with the patient.
• Listen to patients and help them process and share their feelings.
• Help the patient become aware of negative reactions and behaviors.
• Identify the patient’s triggers that lead to alcohol and drug use.
• Teach the patient healthy coping skills.

• Facilitate group and individual counseling sessions at both outpatient and inpatient treatment centers.

2. Research Education Requirements

When becoming a counselor, you should research the requirements for becoming a drug addiction counselor in your area. Each state has a different experience, educational, and licensing requirements.

The type of practice you’d like to work in will also determine the training and education you will need. Look at your state’s requirements before selecting an educational program to ensure that your education matches your needs and desires.

With that said, some counseling education programs will give you a jump start into a bigger program or certification. If you can’t afford to attend a full program, look into local programs that will give you the initial classes you need.

3. Start Official Training

Now that you’ve determined you want to delve into the counseling career world, seek a relevant degree or certification. Many addiction counselors have bachelor’s degrees. Others have training in social sciences like sociology or psychology focusing on mental health counseling.

In some cases, you can accomplish a lot with education focused on substance abuse training.  Training may qualify you for the following jobs:

• Case manager
• Alcohol and drug counselor 
• Recovery coach
• A human services program specialist
• Residential advisor or assistant
• Outreach Specialist
• Addictions counselor assistant
• Prevention Specialist

Such basic training may allow you to get your foot in the door for drug and alcohol addiction counseling careers. Then, once you’re working in the field, you could continue to pursue educational opportunities, sometimes paid for by your employer.

4. Seek Clinical Experience

Many states require their counselors to complete a certain number of clinical hours. You may be able to open your career options by volunteering at a clinic. You could encounter a variety of cases and can learn from the counselors working there. 

Look for internship or practicum opportunities near you. Seek out volunteer opportunities so you can learn as much as possible about your field while receiving valuable clinical experience. Volunteer work could look great on a resume as you begin to seek a job after you’ve finished your official training. 

5. Take Licensing Exam

You may have various career opportunities, but you limit yourself if you do not take the proper licensing exam. Once you’ve completed the necessary classes and training as required by your state, you may need to take a licensing exam. 

Learn what your state requires, so you’re prepared to study for the right exam. The exam typically focuses on information about proper counseling procedures and the data surrounding addiction. Look for online resources or study groups to help you prepare for the required exams. 

6. Find Certification

To advance your career more, seek certification as well as licensing. The California Substance Abuse Counselor may offer relevant certification exams for drug addiction counselors. Such certification may advance your skills and demonstrate to your clients that you understand the field. 

The CCAPP and CAADE provide different levels of certification. You could achieve one of three levels of the Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor and one of two levels of Licensed Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor. CCAPP Credentialing could help you earn your LAADC, a non-governmental license. 

7. Stay Educated

After passing all of your state licensing programs, seek further education opportunities. Some states require drug addiction counselors to complete a number of continuing education hours every few years. 

It is important to know what your state requires and stay compliant with those requirements.

Even if your state does not have such mandates, you will be a better counselor if you stay up-to-date on data and best practices. Serve your clients well by staying educated even when a governing body doesn’t require you. 

As you seek continuing education opportunities, look at areas that will broaden your experience. For example, if you don’t feel comfortable with group therapy training, look for opportunities to learn more about that topic.

Most of us take electricity for granted. We flip a switch and expect the world to come to life and flood with light. The magicians behind this little trick are the heroes that keep our world running.

Career options such as those in the electrical field offer fulfilling and rewarding work. You get to work with your hands and bring the world to life simply because it’s your job.

So how does one become an electrician? What kind of career training do you need? 

Becoming an electrician requires time and focus, but it can be a short path to a new and fulfilling career. 

By the time you finish reading this article, you should understand the skills needed to become an electrician and the path you could take for career training in the electrical field. 

Skills Needed

To better understand how to become an electrician, you first must understand the skills you need and the things that an electrician does all day. Here are the basic skills you need to be an electrician. 

Physical Strength

You do not need to be a bodybuilder, but you should be able to move up and down scaffolding or a ladder several times daily. You may also need the ability to dig a trench since electricians do this occasionally to bring power to a building. 

Plan on either standing or kneeling for long periods. In short, you need to be in relatively good physical shape to be an electrician. 

Flexibility

Electricians rarely do the same work daily and from job to job. Therefore, you should be flexible with the needs of the job. On the upside, this job will not bore you. 

You may find yourself under a house one day and on top of a building the next. You may have to run conduit through an attic or dig a trench outside the building. You may also need the ability to climb high scaffolding and crawl into tight spaces, like under a sink. 

Manual Dexterity

Electricians are typically good with their hands. You may have to handle and manipulate small parts such as transformers, circuit breakers, and other electrical components. 

Social Skills

Social skills play a big part in building a business as an electrician. Electricians work with a variety of clients, as well as contractors and entrepreneurs that have electrical needs. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are also advantageous to compete for contracting jobs. 

Observation Skills

Electricians usually have excellent observation skills to detect hazards and defects before they step into a problem. Some electricians enjoy the mystery of figuring out an electrical problem, and they have excellent observation skills that help them solve these problems. 

Critical Thinking Skills

Electricians need excellent cognitive reasoning skills to pinpoint the best way to solve an electrical problem. You also need the ability to read and prepare a blueprint as you look at where equipment, outlets, fixtures, and wiring should be located. Such skills could help ensure you adhere to building codes. 

Electricians also need excellent decision-making skills. Your clients will present you with a problem, and you’ll need to weigh the costs and benefits of each option to figure out the most appropriate solution. 

Meet General Requirements

If you have these skills and the desire to pursue a career as an electrician, it’s time to look into career training. You need to meet basic general requirements as well. 

• Be at least 18 years old.
• Hold a GED or high school diploma.
• Have generally good algebra and math skills.
• Have reliable transportation.

You should also be in good physical condition and be able to work independently and as part of a team. 

Seek a Proper Training Certificate

Your career plans should start with a proper training certificate. The best schools will have programs that teach what you need to know without extra fluff. 

Seek out a program that teaches you the following skills: 

• Basic trade mathematics
• Fundamentals of power distribution and electricity
• Residential, industrial, and commercial wiring requirements
• National electrical code requirements

You may have additional control theories and requirements within the program, but a good program will have these fundamentals. You should be able to walk away with the confidence that you’re ready for an apprenticeship and on-the-job training. 

Some programs offer adequate on-the-job training, so you may not have to complete an apprenticeship program. You could receive the same training and skills from an apprenticeship program, but you may not have to complete this step. 

If you want a faster track, seek a program that seamlessly moves you from training to the journeyman’s test. 

Take Your Journeyman’s Test

To become a full-fledged electrician, you will have to pass the journeyman’s exam. You will have to study the NEC, or the National Electric Code, as well as principles of electrical theory to pass this important exam. 

Each state has a different format and content for the journeyman’s electrician license, so know your state’s requirements. The test will include questions specific to your state’s regulations and laws. 

At this point, get your hands on a copy of the most recent NEC handbook. Then, you can learn how to move through the NEC code book one chapter and section at a time. 

Make a plan to review one code a day. Then create flashcards to help yourself learn the code. Brain science has proven that repetition is a key component of learning and remembering over time. 

Individuals who take the InterCoast Colleges’ Electrical Training Program may be qualified to sit for the Journeyman examination. After students complete their courses, they should be able to qualify to take the exam and then complete their required hours. Once they’ve done this, a student qualifies to apply for their electrical license. 

The Short Steps to Becoming an Electrician

In this interview, we will discuss Judy’s background, her current role at InterCoast Colleges, the challenges facing the field of substance use disorders and co-occurring counseling, and her advice for individuals interested in pursuing a career in this field.

Staff: Can you tell us about your background and how you got involved in the field of substance use disorders and co-occurring counseling?

Judy: I am a woman in recovery, celebrating 25 years of sobriety. My own recovery was my introduction to the field of Substance Use Disorders. I then went to school to become a Substance Use Disorder Counselor. I have worked in and around treatment for almost 25 years.

Staff: What inspired you to become a professor and educator in addiction studies?

Judy: Almost 20 years ago, my Instructor Jim Feist, who was also my mentor, introduced me as an instructor to InterCoast Colleges. I have had the honor and privilege to be a professional part of the InterCoast Colleges Family since 2004. InterCoast Colleges’ Leadership encouraged me to continue my own education. Today, I have earned a Ph.D. (abd) in Educational Management.

Staff: Can you talk about your current role as Director of the Alcohol and Drug Studies Counseling Program at InterCoast Colleges and your responsibilities in this position?

Judy: As the Director of the Alcohol and Drug Studies Program, I have the opportunity to oversee the Alcohol and Drug Counseling Curriculum. At InterCoast, the success of the students is our focus. We all work together, doing whatever needs to be done at the moment, to assure that our students reach their goals. The field of addiction medicine is rapidly changing, and it is a full-time job to keep abreast and current with the current Evidenced Based Treatment Practices. It is my responsibility to research and continues to learn to bring the strongest possible curriculum to the students and instructors to best serve the treatment community.

Staff: What do you believe are the biggest challenges facing the field of substance use disorders and co-occurring counseling today?

Judy: The Fentanyl Epidemic, the purity of the drugs on the streets, and the high level of THC in Cannabis products.

Staff: How do you see the field evolving in the future and what do you think needs to be done to meet those changes?

Judy: The field has shifted away from the Criminal Justice System as the major financial contributor to being funded by Drug MediCal and SAMHSA Grants. For 75 years treatment was based on the Minnesota Model of Treatment, AKA, Abstinence Based/12 Step Programming Treatment. Today’s treatment is now subscribed to Medical Necessity, Medication Assistance Treatment, and Harm Reduction strategies. This shift requires today’s Substance Use Disorder Counselors to be knowledgeable of Evidenced Based / Medical Modalities of Treatment.

Staff: Can you share any exciting initiatives or projects that you are currently working on at InterCoast Colleges?

Judy: With the help of many contributors and a great team, we are finishing up the development of the Bachelor of Addiction Medicine. InterCoast Colleges is very much involved in Legislation as it pertains to the Prevention and Treatment of Substance Use Disorders. 

Staff: What advice do you have for individuals interested in pursuing a career in the substance use disorders and co-occurring counseling field?

Judy: Be willing to work on your own issues. You cannot help someone unless you are willing to do the work yourself. Practice what you preach.

Staff: Can you share any success stories or experiences that stand out in your work with individuals struggling with addiction?

Judy: I can share hundreds of success stories that involve InterCoast College alumni. I seldom walk into a facility, conference, workshop, or community event where I am not surrounded by students that I have had the opportunity to teach. InterCoast Colleges is well known in the treatment community. The reason for this is that ICC has placed hundreds of students throughout the Substance Use / Behavioral Health Disorder Treatment Modalities.

Staff: What do you think are the key qualities or skills required for individuals in this field to be successful?

Judy: Be willing to continue to learn and evolve as a Substance Use Disorder Professional, and most importantly, to continue to work on yourself.

Staff: What do you hope to achieve in your role as Dean of the Alcohol and Drug Studies Counseling Program at InterCoast Colleges?

Judy: I would like to be a part of the development of InterCoast Colleges’ Alcohol and Drug Studies Counseling Textbook.

In addition, there are three alcohol and drug counseling certification bodies in California. So, when considering your career options, which should you choose?

How to Get Certified as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor

If you’re considering career training as an alcohol and drug counselor, you have many options. There is something for everyone in this field, from entry-level to advanced certifications. The best way to find the right one for you is to research the different options for certification.

When considering schools, finding a program that offers the courses, you need to apply for certification in your chosen career is important. 

Most alcohol and drug counseling studies programs will require you to complete a certain number of hours of classroom study. Some levels of certification may also require a degree in behavioral science or allied health professions. 

In addition, you may need on-the-job training, which may be a practicum or internship. Once you have completed all of the requirements for a particular program, you will be able to apply for certification from one of the three boards in California.

However, each board has slightly different requirements. It’s important to decide which board you want to get certified by before beginning your coursework. 

The Differences Between Certification Boards in California

Three certification boards in California offer certifications. All three of these organizations have different requirements for becoming certified. 

The California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals 

The California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals, or CCAPP, is one of the boards. They’re a member of the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC & RC). 

They offer several different certifications, each with different requirements. The Registered Alcohol Drug Technician or RADT  is the most basic level. CCAPP also offers a Certified Alcohol Drug Counselor or CADC. 

The CADC certification is available at three levels CADC I, CADC II, and CADC III. The amount of education you need increases with each level of the CADC certification.

Additionally, CCAPP offers two certifications for individuals with master’s degrees. The basic level for individuals with a master’s degree is the Licensed Advanced Alcohol Drug Counselor or LAADC. You can go on to get the Licensed Advanced Alcohol Drug Counselor Supervisor or LAADC-S. 

The California Association for Alcohol and Drug Educators 

The California Association for Alcohol and Drug Educators, or CAADE, also has different levels of certification. Their certification is through the Addiction Counselor Certification Board of California or ACCBC. 

One of the biggest differences with this board is the exam you will need to pass. While the other two boards require the IC & RC exam, this board requires a CATC exam. 

One of the great things about going through this board is that they have a well-defined career ladder. You can get certified at a trainee level or a more advanced level. Their Registered Addiction Counselor or RAC is intended for students working towards certification. 

Once students are ready, they can become certified interns or “i” if they’ve passed the CATC exam but are still working towards meeting the minimum requirements for CATC. The CATC is their lowest level of professional certification. CATC stands for Certified Addiction Treatment Counselor. 

This board offers CATC, CATC I, CATC III, CATC IV, and CATC V. Each level requires more education and experience levels. While the highest level of certification through CCAP only has a master’s degree requirement, the CATC V requires a doctoral degree. 

In addition, this board also offers a unique certification called the CATC N. This certification is for registered nurses who meet the AOD studies requirements. This board does require the applicant’s education or degree to be completed at a regionally accredited college or university. 

In addition, this is the only board that does not offer a supervisor certification. 

The California Association of DUI Treatment Programs

The California Association of DUI Treatment Programs, or CADTP, is the third certification body.

With this board, you can register as a Substance Use Disorder Registered Counselor (SUDRC). This is necessary to be compliant with the HSC Section 11833(b)(1) standards.

This standard states that anyone working in a licensed or certified DHCS AOD program, except for licensed individuals, needs to be registered. This is for people training for certification and requires 9 hours of orientation.

The certifications offered by this board are Substance Use Disorder Certified Counselor (SUDCC). There are five levels of this certification. These include SUDCC, SUDCC II, SUDCC III, and SUDCC IV.  

Like the CADC, people applying for this need to have passed the IC & RC exam. The amount of education the applicant needs depends on the certification level. The highest level of education required is a master’s degree. 

Additionally, this board offers two supervisory certifications. These certifications are the SUDCC III-CS and SUDCC IV-CS. 

Get the Education You Need for Alcohol and Drug Counseling

There are many different types of alcohol and drug counseling studies certifications available. This can make it difficult to choose the right one.

1. Do Plenty of Research.

To become an addiction counselor, you first must start researching what training programs exist.

Before figuring out the requirements for becoming a counselor, take time to find out what the job involves. It is also a good idea to find out what types of addiction counselor positions are available in your area.

There are various types of alcohol counselors. They might work for the same organizations, but they could take on different roles. Some counselors might work in drug rehabilitation centers. Others might work with at-risk youth.

By digging deep into your research, you should be able to figure out whether or not it might be right for you to become an addiction counselor.

If this is the right career, look for programs that offer BAS degrees in addiction studies. 

2. Speak with Professionals

Once you have taken the time to reach out to people who already work in the field of addiction treatment, you should begin to understand what it is like to work as an addiction counselor.

These professionals will not be able to speak about their specific client relationships. But they may be able to help you understand what it is like to work as a counselor.

Most people you reach out to may also be willing to speak about the pros and cons of working as a drug and alcohol counselor. They should be able to tell you important things you cannot learn by reading a book.

3. Understand the Education Requirements

In most circumstances, you may want a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Some people choose to major in addiction studies. Others may prefer to focus on psychology or social work.

Some alcohol counselor jobs could require that you have a master’s degree. Also, most states require alcohol counselors to be licensed or certified.

This usually involves completing a certain amount of education and training. You might also need to pass an exam.

In most circumstances, the educational requirements for becoming an alcohol counselor will vary, depending on what “level” of a career you strive to reach.

If you want to increase the likelihood of getting a good job, it is crucial to get good grades. It will also be helpful to develop strong relationships with your professors.

4. Complete Your Clinical Hours

It will be necessary for you to spend many hours doing supervised drug and alcohol counseling work. Some people consider this to be a form of “shadowing.”

But you may also need to work with clients on your own. A drug and alcohol counselor or a clinical supervisor should be required to supervise your work. They should also offer feedback and advice to help you become a better counselor.

Many people don’t get the chance to figure out if becoming an addiction counselor is right for them until they start working directly with clients. There is a big difference between learning in class and working directly with clients.

5. Pass Your Evaluations and Background Checks

Anyone working with at-risk individuals (especially those with youth) will need to complete background checks. You will need to get your fingerprints taken and complete a background check.

As long as you don’t have a history of felonies or child abuse, you should be able to pass this check.

You will then need to complete your necessary examination if your state requires this. You will still need to put a lot of effort into preparing for it. Various universities offer preparation courses or workshops. Those who fail the exam are often permitted to retake it.

6. Find a Job

Before you start applying for jobs, it is a good idea to figure out your options and preferences. Are you more interested in working with teenagers, children, or adults?

Would you prefer to work at a treatment center or feel more comfortable at a group home?

Once you figure out where you want to work and what job you want, you will need to start applying for jobs. You could network with your professors to find out about available positions.

7. Remember that Counseling Is Stressful and Rewarding

It can be stressful to work as an addiction counselor, as you will be helping people to navigate through difficult moments in their lives. You also might need to work long hours.

But most people who work as addiction counselors also feel good about themselves. They understand that they are positively impacting their clients’ lives.

According to money.usnews.com, the average salary for an electrician is about $56,900 a year. On top of being lucrative, this career field is also in high demand. No matter where you live, trained electricians should be needed. 

Before you can start, however, you will need to get your education by enrolling in an electrical training program. There are many different courses, and not all are built the same. Some may offer different classes than others, for example. 

Before enrolling, you should also look at a college’s reputation and graduation rate. Continue reading to learn more. 

Consider the Length of the Program 

Even if a career training program only offers a handful of courses, you still need to ask how long it could take to graduate. The length of the classes may vary depending on the subject matter. 

Talk to the program administration to discuss specific dates. Be sure to ask about part-time and full-time courses to decide what option will work best with your schedule. 

You also have to consider your budget. The longer the program, the more money you’ll spend on courses. 

Avoid Distance Learning

While you can save money by taking online courses, there’s only so much you can learn about becoming an electrician from behind the keyboard. You should need to get your hands dirty at some point. 

That is why you should stay away from programs that are online only. You may want to take hybrid classes if it is challenging to find time in your busy schedule to come into the classroom daily. 

These programs may allow you to receive some of your education online and get the practical experience you need. 

What Courses Should the Program Offer? 

Programs should provide a good mix of the fundamentals of electricity, safety, OSHA standards, hands-on learning, theories, code requirements, and residential and commercial wiring. You will likely also need to take some basic math classes. 

If you are going into a program hoping to specialize, that may take some extra high-level training classes. Your school advisor can keep you on the path toward your goals.  

Look at Their Reputation 

Unlike previous students, no one can give you inside knowledge of an electrical training program. Reviews will tell you about the quality of a program’s classes and instructors. 

Google and Facebook reviews are an excellent place to start. Some schools have comments from previous students right on their websites. 

Visit the Facility 

During your junior and senior years of high school, taking a tour of the colleges you’re interested in is recommended. Doing so will allow you to poke your head into classrooms, look at dorm rooms, and sample the cafeteria’s food. 

You may also get the chance to ask the administration any burning questions. If the school you are interested in doesn’t offer tours, you may be able to ask questions via email.

Degree Options 

If you are like most people, your overall goal is to become a licensed electrician. Whether you have a trade school diploma or a bachelor’s degree from a four-year university, you can do that if you meet the other requirements. 

The school will be able to tell you what degree or certificate you can receive from their electrical training program and let you know what you can do with it.

You Get What You Pay For 

When it comes to trade school programs, you get what you pay for. Again, even though you can save money by doing classes online, it’s not always a good idea. You may not gain as much in-depth knowledge at a trade school. 

Most degree programs can take at least a year to complete. Any school that claims they can get you licensed faster, should raise a few red flags in your head. 

Your certificate may be worthless if you don’t know how to apply the knowledge you learned. While you can learn a lot from an inexpensive program that only focuses on safety and theory, you also need hands-on training. 

Accreditation 

Accreditation is a school’s promise to give you a good education. Schools can only get accreditation if they meet certain quality standards. 

You must enter an accredited trade program or school to get financial aid if qualified. Some employers might only accept your degree or certification if it’s from an accredited school.

Graduation Rate

A school’s graduation rate is the percentage of students who graduate with degrees. If a school’s graduation rate is only 30%, that doesn’t bode well. This means that for every 100 students enrolled, only 30 will complete their program.

If you attend such a school, you may struggle to meet your career goals. 

Financial Aid Options 

Between tuition and books, going to school can be expensive. Most programs have financial aid options you can take advantage of if you qualify. You can get this information by talking to the administration of the college. 

Again, if the program is accredited, you may be able to receive government assistance if you qualify. 

Choose the Right Electrical Training Program for You 

There are many steps to becoming an electrician. The first and most important one is to receive the best education possible. 

Look for an accredited electrical training program that offers informational and hands-on courses. When searching for the right school, consider the program length, graduation rate, financial aid options, and reputation.

Treatment plans help focus patient care, identify risks, and plan long-term recovery. Sometimes Behavioral Health Assistants will also complete other administrative tasks, such as patient notes for the shift or making notes of conversations with relatives.

Monitoring Patients

A Behavioral Health Assistant’s job description will often include monitoring patients. Monitoring may consist of observation if a patient is at risk or reporting to supervising staff if they notice a change in a patient. It frequently involves conversations regarding the client’s progress towards goals that have been set.

Assisting Therapy Sessions

Some become Behavioral Health Assistants and then take further education and training to become social workers, counselors, or therapists. The Behavioral Health Assistant’s role may include opportunities to assist in a group, family, or individual therapy work. Assistance in therapeutic care will likely require supervision from the rest of the behavioral health team.

A Behavioral health assistant will often provide emotional support for clients as they work directly with them.

Supporting Patient Independence 

A Behavioral Health Assistant also upholds patient care and supports independent living for patients. They will prepare patients for different activities, such as medical visits and other tasks contributing to their independence. Patient care plans will be tailored to support this.

Administrative Work

The importance of a Behavioral Health Assistant means they are supporting allied health professionals in different ways. Part of a Behavioral Assistant’s job description involves administrative work. This includes organizing documents, answering phones, and scheduling appointments.

But what does an electrician do? What exactly do they do with lights and outlets?

What Is An Electrician?

Electricians are tradesmen and women. They design, install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring systems.

Electricians may work in houses, commercial buildings, industrial settings, and more. They can work on small outlets or large machines.

The work they do depends on their expertise and specialization. Electricians may work on small, intricate structures. Or, they may devote their time to large, hefty pieces of equipment.

What Does An Electrician Do?

Electricians fall into two main categories:

What Are Residential Electricians?

What Are Commercial Electricians?

Residential Electricians Vs. Commercial Electricians

Residential and commercial electricians perform the same basic tasks. But, there are five major differences to consider:

1. The services they offer
2. The equipment and supplies they use 
3. The technical skills they have to learn
4. The size of the projects they take on
5. The standards, compliance, and regulations they have to follow

The basic terms of each job may seem like they’re the same. But, these experts are performing two different jobs.

1. The Services They Offer

Residential electricians, also known as domestic electricians, focus on residential electrical installation. With this comes a lot of responsibilities:

• Reading and following technical blueprints
• Maintaining electrical appliances and fixtures
• Diagnosing and repairing issues with electrical systems
• Inspecting and rewiring residential electrical systems

Commercial electricians perform many of the same electrician duties. However, they do these tasks on a larger, more complex scale. 

Commercial electricians follow official blueprints. They use these while installing wiring systems, machines, control panels, and more. Commercial electricians are more likely to work in large, public buildings.

These electricians may also handle permitting for their city. This is especially true if they live in one of the major cities across the United States.

2. The Equipment And Supplies They Use

Residential and commercial power supply require different levels of energy production. Residential electricians may deal with single-phase systems that range from 120 volts to 240 volts. On the other hand, commercial electricians may handle three-phase systems with anywhere from 120 volts to 480 volts.

Commercial buildings require more power. Most of these buildings have increased industrial electric loads.

Because of the difference in power needs, there are differences in equipment and supplies.

Commercial electrical systems require cables that have more insulation and sheathing. These more durable cords can handle the demands that commercial buildings have. For example, these cables can handle higher voltage and current flow.

Commercial electrical systems are easy to access. They have control panels so electricians can fix problems as quickly as possible.

3. The Technical Skills They Have To Learn

The basic electrician training behind residential and commercial electricians is the same. Some electricians may have the same beginning. They could have similar electrician degrees or trade school certificates.

However, the specialized electrician training differs.

In general, commercial electricians have to get more training. The three-phase systems that these electricians use require more knowledge and training to set up and install.

Commercial electricians learn a lot. For example, they may learn how to balance voltages, create phase diagrams, manage control systems, and more.

4. The Size Of The Projects They Take On

Commercial electricians handle much bigger projects than residential electricians. However, not all commercial electricians have to work in large buildings. Some of them work for large homes/estates and apartment buildings.

Because of their training, commercial electricians can complete residential jobs. But, the opposite is not necessarily true. Although, residential electricians can always get more training to get other jobs.

5. The Standards, Compliance, And Regulations They Have To Follow

Electricians must follow many standards to comply with their license and the city and state they’re working in. With each installation, there are regulations in place. They tell the electricians what cables, insulation, and fittings they can use.

Commercial electricians have even more stringent standards. All electricians have to consider safety codes and insurance. In California, electricians start as electrical trainees.

As for licensing, electricians in California must hold a C-10 Electrical license issued by the Contractor State License Board or the Department of Consumer Affairs.

If you want to become an electrician with a C-10 Electrical Contractor License, one option for you may be:

• To be registered as an electrician trainee (https://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/ecu/4a.html)
• You need to prove that you are enrolled in a state-approved school like InterCoast Colleges to register as an electrician trainee. 

After completing formal training, you will work on accumulating 8,000 hours of on-the-job experience. After taking and passing the state examination, you may apply for your license. But, you can work as an electrician trainee under a C-10 licensed contractor to gain work experience and accumulate your on-the-job experience.

So, what does an electrician do? Well, it depends on their training and education. But, it’s more than that.

With time and continued recovery, the trust may be restored with family members and friends, especially those that were there during treatment. But this process isn’t easy – trust is something that must be rebuilt slowly over time. These strategies may help you start the journey of rebuilding trust after your loved one begins recovery from drug or alcohol addiction.

Have a Conversation

Communicating with one another is the first step in rebuilding trust after someone begins drug rehab. Whether your loved one is still in treatment or already living in their own home, sit down and discuss expectations, boundaries, and the support they’ll need.

This conversation should cover a range of topics. These topics may include:

●   Who will cover the cost of treatment or any other expenses related to their addiction

●   What each of you should and shouldn’t discuss with one another

●   Expectations for aftercare and continued treatment

When it comes to boundaries, don’t be afraid to say what is and isn’t okay. If you don’t feel comfortable talking about addiction or your loved one’s treatment, it’s okay to say so.

Set Boundaries

After you’ve had a conversation with your loved one about their addiction issues, setting boundaries is essential. If your loved one is still in treatment, set clear boundaries about what you will and won’t discuss with them.

If your loved one has completed treatment, set boundaries about how often you plan to communicate and how often you expect to hear from them. One thing to remember when setting boundaries is that your loved one is still in the early stages of recovery, which means they may make mistakes.

Avoid punishing them for every slip-up or mistake they make – try to understand that they’re still learning as they go.

If you feel like your loved one isn’t respecting your boundaries, don’t be afraid to speak up and explain how you’d like to handle things moving forward.

Forgive, But Don’t Forget

When a loved one enters alcohol addiction treatment, it’s natural to feel hurt and betrayal, especially if they kept their addiction a secret. Forgiveness might be extremely challenging if your loved one keeps their addiction a secret.

If your relationship feels irreparable or you struggle to forgive your loved one, consider talking to a therapist. A therapist may be able to help you process your feelings and find ways to move forward.

Help Your Loved One Build Their Network

One of the most critical steps in recovery is building a solid network of friends and supporters. You might need to step back and let your loved one interact with new people.

Let your loved one go to meetings, invite new friends over, and try to engage with people who aren’t part of their immediate family. If you want to help your loved one build a strong network, offer to help in other ways.

Offer to cook, do chores around the house, or drive your loved one to meetings or appointments. You may also help by offering emotional support and encouragement when you see your loved one struggling.

Take Care of Yourself

While supporting your loved one is essential, you must also take care of yourself. This means setting healthy boundaries and avoiding enabling behaviors.

If you feel like you’re being taken advantage of, make changes. Let your loved one know you’re willing to offer support, but you also need time for yourself. Take care of your physical, emotional, and mental health.

This means practicing good self-care and avoiding enabling behaviors, like covering for your loved one or making excuses for them. Asking for help when needed is an excellent way to take care of yourself.

Talk to a therapist if you feel overwhelmed or like you’re being taken advantage of. They can help you process your feelings and develop a plan for self-care moving forward.

Taking care of yourself could also mean pursuing a high school diploma in something you’ve always wanted to study, such as mental health or business. The more you do ensure you’re in a great place in life, the better support you’ll be able to offer your loved ones when they complete treatment.

Who Should Attend This BAS Degree Program?

The ideal student for this program wants a career in alcohol and drug counseling. Graduates may qualify to pursue up to five California specialty certifications for drug and alcohol treatment.

This program follows a “2 + 2” format. Students entering the program should already have an Associate’s degree in a related field. Students should have at least 255 hours of experience in a clinical internship setting.

Most Associate degree programs that would fit these requirements already require a high school diploma or GED. This program also makes those requirements explicit.

It is preferred that you already possess California certification in the field when applying. However, this shouldn’t stop students who have already completed the necessary education and may still need to take the exam. InterCoast Colleges offers an exam prep class for students in this situation.

What Do You Want?

No two career paths follow the same trajectory. This degree program accounts for that. Graduates should be ready to perform in many fields, including research, counseling, and community support work.

If you rely on Title IV funding for your education, you’ll need to find another program. Currently, ICC’s BAS program doesn’t qualify for these funding sources. But, payment plans and VA funding may be available.
