The world of social media, while brimming with cat videos, family photos, and friendly banter, also harbors a sinister side. This darker realm is teeming with swindlers and scam artists, cunningly concealed behind the masks of familiar faces. 

In this modern-day game of digital deception, these fraudsters are continuously inventing new ways to exploit the unsuspecting user. Take the case of Jackson, California's, Rich, who is sharing his unsettling experience with us. 

"Several months ago, I received a text from what I thought was an old high school buddy whom I hadn’t spoken to for quite a long time. He asked if I was a member of Costco, to which I replied, "Yes". 

He then texted me and request that I purchase a $200 cash gift certificate and send it to his sister who was on the road and was in desperate need of funds.

The fortunate thing here is that Rich quickly recognized the scam, yet not before experiencing a jarring invasion of privacy. How the scammer knew the details of the high school friend remains a mystery, highlighting the audacious lengths these crooks will go to deceive you. 

My guess is that these scammers are sifting through social media and personal data to exploit you to the fullest extent. So, how can you shield yourself from such nefarious activities?

One of the first lines of defense is to make your social media accounts private. This simple step can drastically limit the amount of personal information that is publicly visible, thereby reducing the likelihood of becoming a target. 

Facebook generally has four levels of privacy that you can set your account and posts to.

To make your Facebook account as private as possible, you'll want to choose Only me whenever possible. While some of Facebook's privacy tools are available in the mobile app, you'll need to open the Facebook website on a computer to find all of them.

Enable two-factor authentication wherever possible. This extra layer of security can prevent unauthorized access to your accounts, even if the scammer manages to guess or steal your password. 

Even though you've secured your Facebook and Instagram accounts with the steps above, you still need to beware of steps you can take to protect yourself from social media scammers.

Have strong passwords: using the same password across multiple platforms will always make you more vulnerable because if one account gets hacked, they all get hacked. Consider using a password manager to generate and store complex passwords for your social media accounts. A password manager will also help to keep track of all your passwords. 

Evaluate the source of the link before clicking it: if it is an unknown website or news source, be cautious. Scammers may use phishing links in DMs, emails, posts, or text messages to infect your device with malware or capture your login credentials. 

Be careful of anyone asking you for money: even if they claim to be a friend or family member. Scammers may use romance scams or impersonate someone you know to trick you into sending them money. 

Closely evaluate sensational claims: such as for a cure or treatment, a great prize or gift card, or a job offer that sounds too good to be true. Scammers may use these tactics to lure you into giving them your personal information or paying them a fee. 

Watch out for posts with poor spelling and grammatical mistakes: these may indicate that the post is not from a legitimate source. 

Watch out for sparse profiles: scammers often create sparse profiles to impersonate someone else or to lure you into giving them information. They may use a photo of a celebrity, a friend, or a stranger that they found online. They may also use a name that sounds familiar or appealing. However, if you look closely at their profile, you will notice that they have no other details or activity on their social media. 

Beware of friend requests from familiar faces with whom you are already connected: these requests may be from scammers who are trying to impersonate your real friends and trick you in some way. Before you accept any friend request, always check the profile and compare it with the one you already have. 

Limit what you share about yourself online: scammers may use your personal details, photos, and videos to create fake social media accounts and impersonate you. Scammers can also use this information to steal your identity or access your online accounts. 

Report fake social media accounts whenever you find them: if you suspect a fake account, report it to the social media platform and warn your friends about it. You can also block or unfriend people who send you suspicious messages or requests.

If you suspect you’re a victim of a social media scammer, you need to take urgent action immediately. Here are some immediate steps to take: 

Secure your account: Immediately change your password to lock potential hackers out. If you’re locked out of your account, contact Facebook's support immediately to recover it. 

Inform your contacts: Alert friends and family so they're aware and won't be duped by messages or requests coming from your compromised account. 

Have strong antivirus protection on all your devices: The best way to protect yourself from having your data breached by social media scammers is to have antivirus protection installed on all your devices. Strong antivirus software actively running on your devices will alert you of any malware in your system, warn you against clicking on any malicious links in phishing emails, and ultimately protect you from being hacked.

Monitor account activities: Keep an eye on your active sessions, messages sent, and any changes made to your account. Any unfamiliar activity should be reported and reversed. 

Seek expert help: If you believe your personal information, such as financial data or other sensitive details, has been compromised, consider reaching out to cyber security professionals or services that can guide you on further recovery and protection steps. 

Use identity theft protection: Social media scammers are constantly looking for ways to steal your personal info and use it for their own benefit. They may send you phishing emails, fake friend requests, or malicious links that can compromise your online security. 

Theft protection companies can monitor personal information like your home title, Social Security Number (SSN), phone number, and email address and alert you if it is being sold on the dark web or being used to open an account. They can also assist you in freezing your bank and credit card accounts to prevent further unauthorized use by criminals.

Talking with dogs, decoding whale sounds and interpreting bird calls could all be possible in the coming years as artificial intelligence applications learn to translate different creatures' communications, animal researchers said.

Scientists have started using AI tools to analyze vast quantities of data on various species' communications, ranging from sounds, postures, expressions and more, to determine if they can understand and talk to animals in human terms.

"The door has been opened to using machine learning to decode languages that we don't already know how to decode," said Aza Raskin, who co-founded the Earth Species Project, a nonprofit aiming to develop AI models that let humans have "conversations" with animals. He predicts this will be possible within the next two years.

"The plot twist is that we will be able to communicate [with animals] before we understand" them, Raskin told Scientific American. "It wouldn't surprise me if we discovered [expressions for] ‘grief’ or ‘mother’ or ‘hungry’ across species."

Christian Rutz, a behavioral ecologist at the University of St Andrews, agreed.

With new AI developments, "people realize that we are on the brink of fairly major advances in regard to understanding animals' communicative behavior," he said.

The research and possible breakthroughs go well beyond just translating animals' sounds. Con Slobodchikoff, an animal language researcher, is aiming to develop an AI model that interprets dogs' barks as well as their facial expressions for owners.

"We are so fixated on sound being the only valid element of communication, that we miss many of the other cues," he said. Despite this added complexity, Slobodchikoff is confident that machine learning will soon reveal more about what pets are trying to communicate. 

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

AI advancements are helping translate other animals besides traditional pets, as well.

The lead biologist for Project CETI, Shane Gero, for example, is using it to decode sperm whale sounds. His team is using underwater microphones to track codas — specific patterns of whale sounds — and plans to use AI to translate them.

Gero started by feeding codas his team had manually decoded to an algorithm, which was able to correctly identify a subset of whales 99% of the time. CETI hopes to eventually create a "whale chatbot."

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, meanwhile, has developed a tool that can accurately identify and differentiate sounds from over 1,000 bird species. The Earth Species Project plans to test how zebra finches respond to AI-generated bird calls.

"We'll be able to pass the finch, crow or whale Turing test," Raskin said, referring to the ability to trick animals into believing they are communicating with their own species.

Meet Apollo: Apptronik’s latest "general purpose humanoid robot" powered by artificial intelligence (AI). 

Apollo is a 5-foot-8-inch, 160-pound robot intended to help out people in industrial, retail and manufacturing settings.

Apollo is able to lift and carry a payload of 55 pounds and can run for about four hours on its swappable and rechargeable battery. The battery can be changed out so that it can operate for a 22-hour workday.

I don’t know about you, but just hearing about lifting heavy objects nearly nonstop for four hours straight sounds exhausting to me, and I can’t quickly change my battery and be good to go for another four hours.

Apptronik sees robots, like Apollo, not as a replacement for the human workforce but as a tool to be utilized to complete and fulfill tasks. Apptronik looks to tackle labor shortages, reduce turnover, improve efficiency and reduce work-related injuries with robots like Apollo.

Although Apollo is not fully ready to be implemented into the workforce, its hardware is getting close to becoming work-ready, and I sure am waiting for it.

Don’t panic just yet. Even though you've accidentally deleted something, it doesn't necessarily mean it's gone forever. 

There are some tips you can use to restore your deleted work, so you can breathe a little easier and don’t have to start from scratch.

Many browser tabs are filled with well-intentioned items, such as articles you intended to finish reading or emails that deserve a reply. So, it's understandable to be frustrated about losing them when you accidentally close out a tab that you meant to keep open. However, there is a way to undo this, and it can work for any browser.

If you accidentally close out of a tab that you wanted to keep open, click Command + Shift + T if you have a Mac or Ctrl + Shift + T if you're a Windows user. This will automatically restore the most recent tab you closed out so that you don't have to go through the steps of opening it back up yourself.

Another simple trick you can use for your computer is the Undo function. If you're a Windows user, this keyboard shortcut would be Ctrl + Z, and if you're a Mac user, the shortcut is Command + Z. Scammers can sneak in their low-quality products on these sites and trick you. So, the question is: How does this happen and what can you do to avoid being scammed online?

Some online retailers, such as Amazon and Walmart, allow third-party sellers to offer their products on their platforms. This can greatly benefit small business owners who want to reach a wider audience for their products.

Have you ever seen an iPhone for sale at a ridiculously low price? If so, you might have encountered a scammer who is trying to trick you into buying a fake or stolen device.

Some scammers are also selling fake counterfeit stamps, which are being advertised on Facebook for as low as $19.99 for a roll of 100 stamps.

Scammers will really sell anything that they think will make them money, especially electronics. They're definitely a hot ticket for crooks since these devices often come with a hefty price tag. 

Therefore, if a scammer lists any item that is cheap, innocent buyers who are trying to save money might hop on their product without doing research first and get scammed.

For example, at the time of writing this article, a 2TB external hard drive will typically cost at least $100.

However, at the time of researching this article, after just a few minutes on Walmart's site, I was able to find this one for just $19.99. Pretty hard to believe, right?

Walmart allows third-party products to be sold on its website. According to Walmart.com, third-party sellers are independent sellers who offer a variety of products on Walmart Marketplace. When you buy a product from a third-party seller, you are buying directly from them, not from Walmart.

Looking closer at this one, I noticed that it only has three reviews, and they're not great. Plus, the seller's page did not seem to specialize in electronics.

They sold all kinds of miscellaneous products, from pillows for kids to drawstring bags.

This isn't a product that I would trust. However, people might get excited from seeing that low $19.99 price and rush to add it to their cart.

There are a few things that I mentioned above that you should always be looking out for when shopping online, so here are some of my tips.

Good reviews are a key sign to knowing if a product is good or not. If the reviews are scarce, vague or just overall negative, then it's probably best to move on and look for another product, even if it means having to spend a bit more money.

This brings me to my next point – the price. Of course, there are times when a company is having a big sale or you'll qualify for some special offer that will knock a few dollars off the price.

However, if a product that is typically listed in the higher price range is then listed for something obscenely low on one website, and you can't find it for that low of a price anywhere else, then this might be a red flag. Trust your gut with this one and don't just buy the first thing you see just because it's priced low.

The person selling the product can tell you a lot about whether it's legit or not. Like with the example I showed above, if you're looking for a quality electronic device, then you're probably going to want to buy from a seller who specializes in electronics or at least has a department dedicated to electronics, not one that sells one device and then sells other random products.

You should also be able to see customer reviews on a seller's page from people who have previously bought from them, so that will give you an idea of whether they have good relationships with their buyers or not.

One way you can tell if the reviews are relevant to the product or just written by bots or paid reviewers is by using Fakespot. This is a tool that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to detect fake reviews and scams on Amazon, eBay, Walmart, Best Buy and other online sellers.

Fakespot analyzes the reviews and gives them a grade from A to F based on how trustworthy they are. It also shows you the adjusted rating of the product after removing the fake reviews. You can use Fakespot as a browser extension or a mobile app, and it works with most popular e-commerce platforms.

HOW TO HELP PREVENT YOUR CAR FROM GETTING STOLEN

Now that this issue has become such a major one, the federal government is now requiring online retailers to do a better job of vetting seller credentials with the Integrity, Notification, and Fairness in Online Retail Marketplaces for Consumers (INFORM Consumers) Act, which went into effect in June.

The law aims to increase transparency and accountability in online marketplaces by requiring them to collect, verify and disclose certain information about high-volume third-party sellers of new and unused consumer products. The law also gives the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) and individual states the authority to enforce the law and impose civil penalties for violations.

Although this will likely make some progress, major retailers could certainly be doing more to prevent scammers from selling on their sites.

This is why we need to look out for ourselves when online shopping and always do our homework. Hopefully, this new act will force retailers to work harder to keep their customers safe.

Gone are the days when Apple was almost invincible to viruses and malware. Now, with cyberthreats constantly changing and improving, nothing, whether it’s Mac, Windows or any other operating system, is truly safe anymore. MetaStealer is just the latest example of how hackers can exploit Macs.

Imagine you're sifting through your work emails. You spot one that looks like it's from a client or business partner, possibly referencing a recent project or discussion. There's an attached file labeled as a PDF, something you might typically expect in professional communication.

This is where caution is paramount. That "PDF" might be more than meets the eye. In rare instances, it could be a hidden program designed to trick you, like MetaStealer, waiting to gain a foothold on your Mac and the valuable information it houses.

From there, it acts swiftly, siphoning a trove of sensitive data from the compromised Mac. This isn't just about grabbing a couple of passwords. MetaStealer goes for the jugular. It can access system files, app data and even the contents of Apple’s revered Keychain password manager.

For those unfamiliar, Apple's Keychain is not just any password manager; it's integrated at the system level. This means it doesn't only store website and app passwords.

Always approach email attachments with caution, especially from unfamiliar sources. It might look like it’s from a colleague or a business partner, but sometimes it’s worth double-checking. A follow-up email can sometimes mean the difference between a secure system and a compromised one.

Be wary of the subtle signs of phishing emails. Look out for misspelled words, unusual phrasing or inconsistencies in the message. They're often telltale signs that the message might not be from who you think it is.

These search secrets make getting the results you want easier and faster.

Filter by date: Make sure old links aren’t clogging your search results. First, type in your phrase. Then, tap on Tools, click on Any Time and click on Custom range. A little box called Custom date range will pop up, along with a calendar. You can insert the start and end dates. 

Exclude keywords: It’s annoying when you’re looking for one thing, and results for another keep coming up. With this trick, you can exclude keywords you don’t need. Place a minus sign (–) before the word you don’t want. Throw a plus sign (+) before any word you want to stress as important.

Search for files: Type filetype: at the beginning of your search if you’re looking for a spreadsheet, PDF, or another document. For example, for PDFs, write filetype:pdf in the search, along with your keyword. Need an Excel spreadsheet? Just type filetype:xlsx along with your keyword. Anything publicly available is just a few clicks away.

Advanced Search: During your first search attempt, click Settings just below and to the right of the main text field and look for Advanced Search. You’ll see multiple search fields. You can filter your searches in any number of ways to narrow down to what you want.

No, I want this: If you’re looking for something exact, add quotation marks to the word or phrase (e.g., "Kim Komando tech tips").

Better site search: Not every website has a good built-in search engine. Search a site directly by placing site: directly in front of the URL, then follow it with your search term. It would look like this: site:komando.com "google."

Search social media: Put @ in front of a word to search social media, or add # in front to search hashtags.

Ever pick up the phone, hear a voice, and get that sinking feeling: "This can't be real... can it?"

That unsettling doubt is what David from Los Angeles felt, as did many others when they got a ring from the "LASD West Hollywood Station." Complete with police chatter in the background and all the right details. These scammers have seriously upped their game.

When the scammer starts mentioning missed court dates and insists on immediate payments via gift cards, that's when alarm bells really start going off.

It all starts innocently enough. A concerned "deputy" is on the line, wondering why you or a loved one missed a court date.

The level of detail they have is startling. Names, birth dates, home addresses – it's enough to shake anyone's confidence in their own recollection of events.

As the narrative unfolds, the stakes rise: there are warrants out for an arrest, they claim, all due to this mysterious court date no-show.

The pressure mounts as the "deputy" outlines the supposed consequences of ignoring this issue. No one wants to be tangled up in legal troubles, and the scammer knows this all too well.

They offer a supposed lifeline: immediate payment, preferably in the form of gift cards, to clear everything up and avoid the hassle of arrests or court appearances.

The idea of the Sheriff's Department accepting gift cards as payment is just the tip of the iceberg. They're counting on fear, surprise and the element of urgency they've injected into the situation to cloud judgment. But why gift cards? They're difficult to trace, easily accessible, and can be quickly converted into untraceable currency.

Another tell-tale sign is the insistence that you stay on the line. Scammers may ask that you stay on the phone call with them while you send them the demanded funds in real-time. Legitimate law enforcement doesn't operate this way. They won't demand you stay tethered to a call while driving to a station, nor will they claim such strict and immediate repercussions without due process.

It's easy to think, "I'd never fall for that," but at the moment, when fear and confusion set in, it's not so black and white. And with technology making it easy for caller IDs to be spoofed, it's become even harder to differentiate the scams from the real deals.

HOW TO HELP PREVENT YOUR CAR FROM GETTING STOLEN

When you receive a suspicious call, it's easy to panic, especially when the scammer seems to have so much of your personal information. Take a deep breath and remind yourself that legitimate organizations would never handle sensitive matters in a threatening or urgent way over the phone.

If someone claims to be from a law enforcement agency or any other official body, never act immediately based on that call. Always hang up and dial the official number of the said organization, which you can get from their official website or a trusted directory, not from the caller.

DON’T TOSS YOUR OLD INTERNET ROUTER UNTIL YOU DO THIS

Scammers are always evolving their tactics, so keeping up with the latest scams is essential. Join online forums, community groups, or even sign up for alerts from consumer protection agencies like the FTC. The more you know, the better you can protect yourself.

If you encounter a new scam or technique, don't keep it to yourself. Inform your family, friends, neighbors and coworkers. The more people are aware of these scams, the less likely they will fall for them.

Rather than merely blocking a suspicious number, take an extra step. Report the incident to local authorities and consumer protection agencies. Your report could be the missing piece in a larger investigation.

If you did reveal personal information to these scammers, you’ll want to monitor if they’re using your information to get at your personal and financial accounts. Identity theft protection companies can monitor personal information like your home title, Social Security number (SSN), phone number, and email address and alert you if it is being sold on the dark web or being used to open an account. They can also assist you in freezing your bank and credit card accounts to prevent further unauthorized use by criminals.

One of the best parts of using some services is that they might include identity theft insurance of up to $1 million to cover losses and legal fees and a white glove fraud resolution team where a U.S.-based case manager helps you recover any losses.

Invest in removal services

While no service promises to remove all your data from the internet, having a removal service can be effective if you want to constantly monitor and automate the process of removing your information from hundreds of sites continuously over a longer period of time.

Act quickly: Time is of the essence. If you've shared financial information, contact your bank immediately to block your card or account. They can guide you on the following steps to prevent unauthorized transactions.

Change passwords: If personal details were divulged, change passwords for your online accounts, especially your email and bank accounts, which are often the gateways to other services. Also, consider using a password manager to generate and store complex passwords. 

Monitor your statements: For the next few months, closely monitor your bank and credit card statements for unauthorized transactions. If you find any, report them immediately.

How secure are your online accounts? Do you use the same password for everything?

Using the same password for everything is a bad idea because it makes it easier for hackers to access your accounts. If one of your accounts gets compromised, the hacker can use your password to try to break into your other accounts.

That’s why you need to use different and strong passwords for each account and change them regularly. Passwords alone are not enough to protect your online identity. You also need to use an extra layer of security or multi-factor authentication apps.

These are all great questions, and I want to go through each one step-by-step to make sure everyone has a full understanding of two-factor authentication apps and which are the best to use.

The difference between multi-factor authentication (MFA) and two-factor authentication (2FA) is that multi-factor authentication can use more than two factors to verify your identity, while two-factor authentication always uses exactly two factors.

Multi-factor authentication verifies your identity by using different methods, such as SMS texts, authenticator apps, or physical keys. As an example, to log in to your bank account, you need to enter your password and a code that is sent to your phone. This is multi-factor authentication.

Two-factor authentication is a type of MFA that requires you to provide two authentication factors to verify your identity when logging in. An example is when you use Facebook. You can enable two-factor authentication in the settings so that every time you log in, you need to provide your password and a code. This way, even if someone knows your password, they can’t access your Facebook account without the second factor.

Not every website and app supports all types of multi-factor authentication, so the one you use may have to depend on which account you're trying to log into and what type is supported.

Overall, different types of multi-factor authentication have different advantages and disadvantages, depending on the level of security, convenience and compatibility you need.

A physical security key is probably the most secure option because it is immune to many types of attacks, such as phishing and malware. However, it is not very convenient, as you have to carry it around with you, and not every website and app supports it.

Plus, if you lose it, you may not be able to access your accounts unless you have a backup method or a recovery code. Therefore, you should always keep your security key in a safe place and have a plan in case you lose it.

Are you worried about your car being stolen by thieves? You have good reason to be concerned. Nearly two vehicles are stolen every minute in the U.S., based on the data from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB). This means there are about 2,736 car thefts per day or a whopping 82,080 vehicles ripped off per month.

Car theft is a serious problem that affects many people every year. Thieves can use various methods and technologies to break into and steal cars, whether your vehicle is older and lacks modern security features or is new and has all the bells and whistles. 

There are many ways that thieves have found to use and get around the latest technology to steal cars.

Thieves use a device that scans and copies the code from the key fob when it is in close proximity, such as at a gas station or parking lot, and then use the cloned key to unlock and start the car. 

Crooks can use a device that jams the signal from the key fob when the driver tries to lock the car, leaving the car unlocked and vulnerable to theft. 

This is where thieves use a device that monitors voltage fluctuations in the car’s electrical system and sends a voltage fingerprint that enables the vehicle to start, bypassing the key fob or other authentication methods. 

This is a device used by criminals that captures and amplifies the signal from the key fob inside someone's house and relays it to another device near their car, tricking the car into thinking the key is present. 

Thieves may also use a device disguised as a Bluetooth speaker to wire into the car’s electronic communication network near the headlight connector and impersonate the key fob, unlocking the doors and starting the engine.

If you want to make it harder for thieves to steal your car, you should consider using some of these methods that can deter or prevent them from doing so. 

If you have a keyless car, you need to be extra careful. Car burglars are very clever and they will try to get into your vehicle by using your online accounts and apps that are connected to your car. To stop them from doing that, you should always use a strong password for all your apps and accounts and consider using a password manager to generate and store complex passwords. Never share your passwords with anyone.

If you have a car with a keyless entry system, you might want to get yourself a blocking pouch, also known as a Faraday Bag. The pouch protects your key fob from being hacked or cloned by thieves.

HYUNDAI'S NEW CAR MAKES PARALLEL PARKING A BREEZE

For those with older vehicles that don't have a remote car starter already, you may want to consider getting one for your vehicle. A remote car starter allows you to start your engine from a distance. However, it does not let you drive the car without the key. This is a safety feature that prevents unauthorized use of your vehicle. 

A car starter is a great device to have when the weather is extreme, as it allows you to adjust the temperature of your car before you get inside. 

If you don't have a remote car starter and just leave your keys in the ignition with the car running, you're making it pretty easy for a thief to get in your car and drive off.

A smart car alarm will not only trigger an enormously loud alarm when someone tries to break in, but it will also send an alert to your smartphone in case you aren't within earshot to hear the alarm go off. This will enable you to alert the authorities and, hopefully, scare the thief off.  

You can also install a kill switch into the ignition, fuel line or battery to prevent the car from starting. As long as you remember to activate it every time you get out of your car, thieves will have a hard time getting it to start, because they'd have to find the kill switch and shut it off first. 

By keeping AirTags in your vehicle, you'll be able to track where it is at all times. It would be best for you to have at least two in your car at all times, and you should keep them in a hidden space so that a thief wouldn't easily see them and try to dispose of them. 

And if you want to put AirTags inside a company vehicle, you may want to disclose to the employee that you’re doing this, so they won't feel that their privacy is being violated.

The Club is still a good device to use, as it can be an effective, highly visible anti-theft deterrent that might discourage thieves from taking your car. It's a universal lock that can fit on most steering wheels and makes it difficult to steer the vehicle, forcing car thieves to move on. 

The company claims that the product resists sawing, prying, hammering and freon attacks. However, it isn’t foolproof, as some thieves may be able to cut through it or bypass it. Therefore, you shouldn’t rely on it alone. I recommend using it in combination with other security measures, as I mentioned above.

KIA AND HYUNDAI 'TIKTOK' THEFTS STILL RISING DESPITE EFFORTS TO STOP THEM

Etching your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) into your car windows can deter some potential thieves from stealing your car, because a car with a visible VIN is easier for law enforcement to track down. 

It's also risky to try to sell car parts with a VIN attached to them, and although it might not stop every car thief, it will certainly stop many.  

This is the most basic security measure when it comes to keeping your car safe. Make sure your doors are locked and that your windows are closed whenever you're not in your car. You should also always remember to take your keys with you when leaving your car unattended.  

Thieves are more likely to target cars that are parked in dark and isolated areas, where they can commit their crimes without being seen or interrupted. If possible, park your car near a security camera, a streetlight, a busy entrance or even better, a locked garage.

Even if your car is locked, thieves may be tempted to break your windows if they see something valuable inside, such as a laptop, a phone, a wallet or a bag. Either take your valuables with you or hide them in the glove compartment or the trunk or under the seat.

Car theft is a serious threat that can cause you unneeded financial and emotional stress. By following my tips, you can make your car more secure and less likely to be stolen. 

Remember to always lock your doors and windows, consider a remote car starter, have a smart alarm or a kill switch, use a blocking pouch, park in well-lit and busy areas and never leave valuables in plain sight. By doing these things, you can help protect your vehicle from thieves.

Resetting your router before you dispose of it means restoring it to its factory settings, which erases any changes you have made to its configuration. You wouldn't want a hacker gaining information to any of your private devices like your cellphone or laptop, so you should hold the same rule for your router.

I’m still amazed at how ChatGPT can help write a toast to put people in stitches at a wedding, construct a legal argument to bolster a case and even help with a college admissions essay despite the number of errors the human eye can catch.

Even with the glitches, using a chatbot still astounds most people who manage to put in perfect prompts to get wildly in-depth instant answers.

And while OpenAI’s ChatGPT is impressive, it's not the only option you should be confined to using. 

In fact, some of the biggest tech companies in the world are competing to create their own latest and greatest chatbots that can rival or surpass the AI amazement of ChatGPT. 

Take, for example, Microsoft and Google. Both are giving ChatGPT a run for its money respectively, with Bing Chat and Google Bard. You may find that either is a better alternative to ChatGPT for whatever you are prompting one or another to deliver.

ChatGPT is a chatbot powered by OpenAi’s GPT-3.5 model, which can generate natural language texts. It can chat with you about anything you want, create graphic art, and perform calculations. 

ChatGPT has a free version that anyone can use with an OpenAI account. The free version uses the GPT-3.5 turbo model, which is fast and cable yet not as advanced as the GPT-4 model. The free version also has limitations on availability and features compared to a premium version that is offered.

The premium version, called ChatGPT Plus, costs $20 per month and according to the company offers reliable availability, faster response speeds, priority access to new features like plugins, and access to the GPT-4 model, which is more powerful and coherent than the GPT-3.5 turbo model.

This is Microsoft’s chatbot that leverages the power of the Bing search engine and LaMDA, a state-of-the-art large language model. It can chat with you on various topics, provide web search results, and create graphic art based on prompts.

Perhaps one of the best features of Bing Chat is that you can give your chatbot its personality. Depending on how you want your experience to go, you can choose whether you want your chatbot to be more creative, more precise, or more balanced. 

Bing Chat automatically uses GPT-4 in its software, which is an updated and improved version of OpenAI's conversational GPT AI that can provide more accurate and creative responses to prompts. 

Bing Chat can access the web to provide up-to-date information on current events, products, services, and more - versus ChatGPT which relies solely on its pre-trained knowledge base up until its last knowledge update in September 2021. 

MICROSOFT MUZZLES ITS NEW BING AI CHATBOT FOR INAPPROPRIATE RESPONSES 

Bing Chat is much more customized to the user because it shows you exactly what it searches for and lists sources for you to show where it got its information. 

It can create comparison tables, draw text art, convert date and time, turn web pages into quizzes, and more. 

Bing Chat requires the Microsoft Edge browser and a Microsoft account to access its full features and benefits. 

It is still in an experimental phase and may not be able to handle all types of queries or tasks. 

It may not be as creative or engaging as ChatGPT, as it relies on factual and objective information. 

This is Google’s experimental chatbot that uses the power of laMDA, a state-of-the-art language model.

It may not be able to answer all types of questions or tasks, especially those that require specific or detailed information. 

Google Bard may also produce inaccurate or misleading information, as it draws on information from the web that may not be verified or reliable.

This one is much more conversational and kid-friendly, and you can use it if your child is struggling with a question about their homework or whatever they might be learning about at school. Without simply giving your child the answer, 

Socratic can explain the answer in a way that the child will be able to understand the entire concept so that they can then problem-solve on their own, so you don't have to worry about a robot doing your kid's homework.

Online dangers are growing with our love of online shopping. In fact, 79% of U.S. consumers say that they shop online more frequently now than they did before the COVID-19 pandemic. Although, it also has some risks and challenges, especially when it comes to paying with your credit card.

How can you tell if a website is trustworthy and secure for online payments? What does it mean when a website has HTTP or HTTPS in its web address? How does it affect your online security and privacy?

Margaret Jane raises an excellent question. Let's go over the difference between "HTTP" and "HTTPS" and whether it matters or not when you're paying with a credit card online.

What's the difference between "HTTP" and "HTTPS"? 

The difference between HTTP and HTTPS is that HTTPS uses a SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate to encrypt all data transfer while HTTP is not secured with an SSL certificate and is much more open to hackers stealing sensitive information.

HTTPS is internet security geek-speak for Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure, and it functions similarly to HTTP, except that it works to protect communication between web servers and browsers when transporting data. A website that begins with HTTP does not have this same layer of protection.

It’s all about the letter "S"

In the simplest of terms, imagine you are sending a letter to your friend through the mail. HTTP is like sending a letter in a normal envelope. It is not very secure, and anyone who intercepts the letter can open it and read your message.

HTTPS is like sending a letter in a locked envelope. It is very secure, and only you and the recipient can open it and read your message.

Why is HTTPS more secure than HTTP?

HTTPS is more secure than HTTP because it uses an SSL certificate to encrypt the data that is transferred between the web server and the browser. This means that anyone who tries to intercept or tamper with the data will not be able to read or modify it.

How HTTPS protects your data with SSL certificates

SSL certificates also verify the identity of the website, so you can be sure that you are dealing with a legitimate site and not a fake one. An SSL certificate is a digital document that contains information about the website, such as its domain name, owner and expiration date. 

It also has a public key and a private key, which are used to encrypt and decrypt data. The public key is shared with anyone who wants to communicate with the website while the private key is kept secret by the website owner.

How your browser verifies and encrypts data with HTTPS

When you visit a website that uses HTTPS, your browser will check the SSL certificate and make sure that it is valid and matches the website’s domain name.

If everything is OK, your browser will establish a secure connection with the website and exchange encryption keys.

Then, all the data that is sent and received will be encrypted using these keys.

How to identify HTTPS websites in your browser

You can tell if a website is using HTTPS by looking at the web address in your browser.

If it starts with https://, then it means the website is secure.

You may also see a padlock icon or a green bar next to the web address, which indicates the website has a valid SSL certificate.

Why you should avoid paying with credit cards on HTTP websites

Whether a site takes credit cards or not has nothing to do with whether it uses HTTP or HTTPS. However, if a site does take credit cards, it’s important that it uses HTTPS to protect the sensitive information being transferred.

If you're on a website that uses HTTP, and it's telling you to pay for something with a credit card, you should probably steer clear of it.

The website could be a phishing page or be infected with some sort of malware that could hand your credit card information over to a hacker, and then they could do whatever they want with it.

What can I do to protect myself from a keylogging attack

There are a number of precautions that you can take to avoid becoming the next victim of a keylogging attack.

Have good antivirus software on all your devices

Keeping hackers out of your devices can often be prevented when you have good antivirus protection installed on all your devices. Having antivirus software on your devices will help make sure you are stopped from clicking on any known malicious links, attachments or images that may install malware on your devices and thus allow hackers to gain access to your personal information.

Use a password manager

Keyloggers can’t record what you don’t type, so using a password manager that automatically fills in your login credentials can help you avoid typing them. You should also use strong and unique passwords for each account and change them frequently.

Keep your software and apps updated

Updating your operating system, browser, antivirus software and other applications can patch any security vulnerabilities that hackers can exploit to install keyloggers. I know I sound like a broken record here. You should avoid clicking on suspicious links or attachments that may contain malware.

Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN)

We recommend using a VPN to protect against hackers snooping on your device. VPNs will protect you from those who want to track and identify your potential location and the websites that you visit.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Thursday unveiled new guardrails for its use of artificial intelligence in carrying out its mission to secure the border. 

The new policies were developed by DHS Artificial Intelligence Task Force (AITF), which DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas created in April.

In announcing these new policies, DHS noted that AI has been critical to its missions, including combating fentanyl trafficking, strengthening supply chain security, countering sexual exploitation, and protecting critical infrastructure.

Mayorkas writes in the AI policy memo, expected to be released later Thursday, that the US must ensure AI is "rigorously tested to be effective [and] safeguards privacy, civil rights, and civil liberties while avoiding inappropriate biases." 

DHS has already used AI technology extensively on the southern border, most notably with the use of more than 200 surveillance cameras to detect and flag where human crossings occur. 

DHS says it has appointed Chief Information Officer (CIO) Eric Hysen as the Department’s first Chief AI Officer. Hysen, who was set to appear before Congress Thursday, will promote AI innovation and safety within the Department, DHS said.

"I think the potential for unintended harm from the use of AI exists in any federal agency and in any use of AI," Hysten said. Historically, academics have flagged the dangers of AI regarding racial profiling because it can still make errors while identifying relationships in complex data. 

As part of the new policy, Americans are able to decline the use of facial recognition technology in a variety of situations, including during air travel check-ins. 

DHS’ new guidelines will also require that facial recognition matches discovered using AI technology be manually reviewed by human analysts to ensure their accuracy, according to a new directive that the agency plans to release alongside the AI memo.

During a congressional hearing, Hysen planned to highlight a recent case at California's San Isidro Port of Entry where agents with Customs and Border Patrol had used advanced machine learning (ML) models to flag an otherwise unremarkable car driving north from Mexico for having a "potentially suspicious pattern." 

Agents later discovered 75 kilograms of drugs in the car's gas tank and rear quarter panels.
