Journalists in Bangladesh have come under attack as mobs targeted major media outlets amid unrest following the assassination of radical leader Sharif Osman Hadi. The interim government condemned the violence, warning that such acts threaten press freedom and the country’s democratic transition.
The situation reached a flashpoint on December 15, when a Bangladeshi navy patrol vessel allegedly collided with an Indian fishing trawler, FB Parmita, carrying 16 fishermen from West Bengal. The impact reportedly caused the trawler to capsize, throwing all those on board into the sea.
The victim, Dipu Chandra Das, a young garment factory worker, lived as a tenant in the Dubalia Para area of Bhaluka Upazila in Mymensingh. Police said a group of residents accused him of making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad and assaulted him at around 9 pm on Thursday, leading to his death.
Amid escalating violence in Bangladesh, a Hindu man, Deepu Chandra Das, was brutally lynched in Bhaluka, Mymensingh district, on allegations of blasphemy. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.
