MIAMI — Andrew Wiggins’ NBA career has progressed through several chapters since his one season at Kansas.

Once the highest-ranked high school recruit in the class of 2013 and the No. 1 pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, Wiggins has become an All-Star and league champion not with any individual elite skill but through his versatility and dependability. What has truly made Wiggins elite is his ability to do a little bit of everything at a consistent level.

“I’ll do whatever the team needs me to do, man,” Wiggins said during Miami Heat media day. “I’m here, they need me to score a little bit, I’ll do that. Defend? I’ll do that. Rebound? I’m on the court to do whatever I need to do to win. Whatever that consists of, I’m with it.”

Across each stop in his 12-year NBA journey, he’s adapted to what different teams needed from him. As a Timberwolf, he was one of the main offensive weapons, creating his own shot and constantly attacking. In Golden State, he was chasing boards and the team’s best defender, earning the toughest assignments every night. Last season in Miami, he spaced the floor while adapting and supporting coach Erik Spoelstra’s tenacious zone defense.

“I want to win, so whatever I’ve got to do to help the team win, I’m going to do,” Wiggins told the Journal-World.

Miami had one of the league’s most active offseasons, trading for two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and making global headlines in the process. The Heat also signed Klay Thompson, one of the sport’s most accomplished shooters but also one of Wiggins’ co-starters in Golden State during that title run — so someone who can attest to his value.

“It’s a joy to be around Andrew,” Thompson said. “We were lucky enough to win a championship together and he’s one of the most low-maintenance All-Stars I’ve ever been around. He just does his work, loves his family and his job, and his energy is contagious. (He’s) someone who is unflappable and can’t really be shook.”

With Wiggins and Thompson reuniting and rekindling their friendship off the floor, Spoelstra acknowledges the potential that this brings on the hardwood.

“What matters is that championship level of experience,” Spoelstra said. “… They’ve shared something amazing and beautiful that we’re trying to get to, and we want to create our own story and our own culture.”

Miami knows a thing or two about winning cultures. Since 2000, the Heat has reached seven NBA Finals, trailing only the Los Angeles Lakers for most in that span, and has won the fourth-most playoff games throughout. Much of that success has come under Spoelstra, who took over as Pat Riley’s successor in 2008.

The organization is littered with championship DNA, and when it acquired Wiggins in February 2025, his impact on playoff and championship teams caught the franchise’s attention.

The former Jayhawk was the most experienced player on last year’s roster, and going into this season, only Antetokounmpo and Thompson have spent more time in the NBA among his teammates. He’s not one to lead by being expressive or vocal, but through his work ethic and character. For example, at one point last season, team captain Bam Adebayo told reporters of Wiggins’ offensive rebounding, “That’s his way of getting his fingerprints on the game, and you love to see a guy like that, who’s the quiet one, doing all the dirty work every once in a while.”

Organizations like Golden State and Miami have been anything but quiet, amassing numerous conference and league titles and constantly competing with championship expectations. Wiggins has earned the starting role in all but 12 contests out of 392 played with both franchises.

As a Warrior, Wiggins played six seasons alongside Stephen Curry, the league’s all-time leading three-point scorer.

“He changed a lot for us, for the better,” Curry told reporters when Wiggins was traded away in February 2025. “I hope our experience changed a lot for him as well.”

Wiggins initially arrived in the Bay Area near the 2020 trade deadline after spending six seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he began his professional career and was named the 2015 NBA rookie of the year.

He had been drafted by Cleveland before being shipped to the Twin Cities in an extensive trade that sent Kevin Love to the Cavs, assembling an eventual title-winning trio with LeBron James and Kyrie Irving.

The Canadian native’s resume was built in just one season at Kansas, where he earned the Big 12 freshman of the year award and set the school’s single-season freshman scoring record at the time while also grabbing 5.9 rebounds per game.

Thirteen years later, Wiggins’ versatility continues to pay off, both figuratively and literally. A commitment to a lengthy tenure with the Miami Heat is in place, as he inked a three-year, $64 million extension in July. Unlike typical contracts, the payout decreases by $13.6 million from the first year into the second — money that Miami can spend elsewhere.

“Obviously, I want to be here,” he said. “I want to be part of this special team. So I just wanted to do something that can help everyone out.”

In the meantime Wiggins is expected to start this season, continuing to showcase his skill set and make a vital impact for a ravenous franchise seeking its first championship parade since 2013, with the chance to solidify himself as one of the game’s most impactful role players in the process.

Miami will begin the season on Oct. 21 vs. the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Kaseya Center.
