Etymonline reckons that the Greek ptarmos (sneeze) is probably onomatopoeic. (The 'p' is pronounced in Greek.)

Ptarmigan is from Scottish Gaelic tarmachan. The 'p' is a 17th-century addition due to confusion with Greek pteron (wing).

I was sure we'd seen mercenary, which is related, too, but I was wrong. The closest we've come is mercurial, which really leap out at one as being related, though it is.

Clearly a contraction of "merchandise", and now seen (at least by me) much more frequently than the original. (It first appeared, apparently, in 1982.) The original hasn't been covered yet, nor has "merchant", on which these others are based.
