Preview Pane behavior1 week

I have not used my Windows 10 PC for 6 months. When I fired it up a few days ago, many files, mostly PDF, do not display in the Pane. The puzzling part is that it happens at random among files, external and internal drives. No rhyme or reason to it.

I learn that one of the reasons could be Windows updates. Why on Earth would they want to break something that is working ...
