But, as important as understanding theory is, it can only get you so far. Practical application of conservation skills, whether that be setting up camera traps or writing out budgets, gives students that extra piece to be a successful conservationist. The most significant practical experience, and highlight of my time at Durrell, was the skills development task. Surprising no one, I requested to complete my skills development with the bird department at the Jersey Zoo.\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My background is almost exclusively with raptor husbandry and breeding, so getting an inside look at how other groups of birds, such as waterfowl, hornbills, and songbirds, are cared for in a captive setting was an amazing learning experience. Over the course of a few days I spent time shadowing the bird keepers on their daily routines. I started the morning in the food prep kitchen, helping to chop eggs and fruit. Almost all the birds at the Jersey Zoo are herbivores, so it was a lot of fruit, veg, and seed mix, quite different from the rodents and other small prey items I’m used to preparing. Once the food was prepped, I shadowed one of the softbill keepers on their morning routine, servicing the aviaries of wrinkled hornbills, Javan green magpies, pink pigeons, blue-crowned laughing Recovery Program?\u003C\u002Fstrong> After a precipitous drop in the wild eastern loggerhead shrike population in the 1990s, Environment Canada invited Wildlife Preservation Canada to join the multi-partner recovery effort in 2001. Since then, the wild population size has fluctuated. Studies have shown that although the recovery effort has prevented the species from disappearing from Canada, more work is required to identify and address the causes of the species’ decline. My name is Jane, I am the Napanee Shrike Field Intern. I have been out in the field for a little over a month now, and have seen a lot of cool things in my time outside. Most of the species I have observed have been birds (no surprise there) but I have also seen a coyote and had a couple of deer encounters. Having grown up in a home with a photographer mother and birder father, I was very interested in attempting to capture photos of the wildlife I was seeing. I don’t have one of those super long lenses that all of the top birders have, so I decided to use what tools I had available: my iPhone 13, and the scope provided to me by WPC for field surveys and monitoring. Through the scope, I have seen exciting behaviours, colorful plumage, and new lifers. Like all the best June days, there are a handful of butterflies in my car. Their movements are slow and sleepy; their environment is cool and dark. They don’t know that they are precious cargo, about to undergo an unusual commute.\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the hum of the car, under the asphalt, the land is changing.\u003C\u002Fspan> \u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sparse, rocky outcroppings give way to flat, sweeping fields. The mottled duskywing butterflies in the back seat are traveling a distance they could not fathom on the power of paper-thin wings no bigger than a coin. They are being transported to the conservation lab at Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory, where they are treated to several square (liquid) meals a day and all the host plants they could dream of. Their eggs are collected daily, and their offspring gently raised by hand.\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the time is right, this trip is made in reverse. We return a portion of the hand-reared mottled duskywing to their maternal population. Norfolk County, due to a massive effort from an extensive team of collaborators, the mottled duskywing is in flight again for the first time in More than a third of these species need some form of hands-on intervention to survive. Our national reptile and amphibian program develops and promotes best practices for four key conservation techniques: translocation, headstarting, conservation breeding and in-situ interventions. The hemlock woolly adelgid (\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003Ci>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adelges tsugae\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fi>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), also known simply as \u003Cstrong>HWA, is a sap-sucking insect that can cause extensive damage and death to hemlock trees within 5-10 years\u003C\u002Fstrong>. In an attempt to slow the spread of the invasive HWA and protect hemlock forests, insecticides are being applied to trees. Now, after a series of treatments have been done, there are questions on whether the insecticides will affect more than just the target species. One group of animals that could potentially be affected are amphibians, and one common species in eastern Canada that may be likely to indicate these effects for salamanders more generally, is the \u003Cstrong>eastern red-backed salamander\u003C\u002Fstrong>, \u003C\u002Fspan>\u003Ci>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plethodon cinereus\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fi>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Riley Integrative Ecology Lab at Mount Allison University is currently working on understanding whether insecticide treatment for HWA has any impacts on these small but abundant amphibians. This project is part of a collaboration that includes the Canadian Forest Service, Acadia University, Environment and Climate Change Canada, and the University of Saskatchewan to understand the ecosystem change caused by an invasive species and chemical control. We are grateful to have such a wonderful team focused on this topic, because understanding the ecological impacts of an invasive species is no small challenge!\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have now begun to collect data on these salamanders. Our field season, which spans spring to fall 2026, started out exciting and fast-paced as we set off to\u003Cstrong> several hemlock forests in southern Nova Scotia\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Every trip leads us to beautiful locations, encounters with cool critters, and new challenges. The sites themselves consist of arrays of coverboards, which are small, rectangular hemlock boards, that were placed in each of the forests we are surveying last summer. These coverboards act as cover objects for salamanders, similar to logs or rocks. The forests we work in have either been treated with insecticides or left untreated for HWA. When HWA are present on hemlock, they look very innocuous like tiny cotton balls, but their image does not reflect the large degree of ecological damage they can Recovery Program?\u003C\u002Fstrong> After a precipitous drop in the wild eastern loggerhead shrike population in the 1990s, Environment Canada invited Wildlife Preservation Canada to join the multi-partner recovery effort in 2001. Since then, the wild population size has fluctuated. Studies have shown that although the recovery effort has prevented the species from disappearing from Canada, more work is required to identify and address the causes of the species’ decline.
