I have had some dieback on one of my Larches last year. The only thing I can think of, apart from some strange unknown fungus, is that some of my trees still have some multi-purpose compost in the mix. Since they went peat-free it has become nasty stuff and congeals around the roots forming an unbreathable sloppy mess. I have also had poor growth from some other trees in the sam...
Might just be a protective system by the tree to help itself, it will lose them soon anyway. As Jay says, keep them protected and watered and fingers crossed until next year. Just moving them into shade shouldn't affect them.
