Who are you?

My name is Yoditar, and I come from Venezuela. I am a blogger and community builder.

In April 2022 I became a Vivaldi Ambassador. I’m most active in the Spanish-speaking community, helping with content creation and sharing. I’ve also helped to host an online event as a Twitter Space. The Spanish Vivaldi community is a community that continues to grow every year. More and more people are adopting this browser in universities, companies and as their personal browser.

When did you first get to know about Vivaldi, and what was your first impression?

I first heard about Vivaldi in early 2020, when I accidentally came across a suggestion in some Telegram community or on Twitter.

My first impression was one of curiosity and surprise. I attempted to use it, but it seemed to be a browser with too many features and complexity. After a few more attempts to configure and use it, I abandoned it, because I found it difficult to use and still did not find it useful.

After a few months of using other browsers, I decided to give it another chance, because I needed a powerful browser like Vivaldi. And, since then, it has been my main browser.

I can do things with this browser that I have never been able to do with others. My productivity, flexibility and customization are unique.

When and how do you usually use the Vivaldi browser?

I use Vivaldi to study, to work and for entertainment. I can do everything with Vivaldi!

I use Vivaldi on desktop and mobile, although desktop is my favorite, because that’s where I spend most of my time on the internet.

Vivaldi is my productivity suite, and together with Telegram they are my two must-have tools.

A life without Vivaldi is no life, hehehe.

Which websites, services, and games, etc. do you use most?

I use a lot of social networks like Twitter, Reddit and Vivaldi Social on Mastodon. I like is that Vivaldi lets me access these social networks through the Web Panel or as Progressive Web Apps.

Could I ask for more? Absolutely not! Vivaldi allows me to access my favorite social networks in different ways, to enjoy a better browsing experience in my own way.

Of course, I also access my email, blogs, banking, media, videos, music and more from Vivaldi.

In addition, Vivaldi is my workstation for the projects I collaborate on.

How do you customize Vivaldi?

Privacy is very important to me, and, with Vivaldi, I get what I need, while enjoying a smooth browsing experience.

That’s why a while ago I wrote a post on my Medium blog (in Spanish) about how to configure privacy settings in Vivaldi to enjoy optimized internet privacy.

On the visual side, I have set up Theme Scheduling with the Aurora Dark theme used during the day and the Vaporwave theme at night.

What is your favorite Vivaldi feature?

To say just one is impossible, but I can say two: Web Panels and Progressive Web Apps. 

Both allow me to quickly and easily access the websites or social networks that I use constantly.

The Web Panel on side of the browser window allows one-click access to what is most important to me, so I don’t miss anything while I read, write or reply to comments on social media. For me, the Web Panel is like having tabs always active, without the need to open those tabs.

Whereas the Progressive Web Apps allow me to have an immersive experience on social networks like Twitter, Reddit or YouTube on a larger screen and with an enhanced login experience.

Can you give us a few, final words about Vivaldi?

Vivaldi is everything a browser and the internet should be: a huge community of users customizing the internet to suit them, creating, exploring, and sharing, while respecting their privacy and decisions about how the web should be.

For me, Vivaldi amplifies your web browsing experience; it’s a browser that adapts to each user. Everything you ever imagined you could do with your browser, Vivaldi does. You could say that Vivaldi makes your dreams come true. 😃

Workspaces

In this snapshot we enable workspaces. What are workspaces? A way to organise and collect your tabs! If that sounds familiar and reminds you of tab stacking, don’t worry, you are not the only one. Some of us thought exactly the same when we first discussed this internally. 😉

There is indeed overlap with tab stacks and yet they are also quite different. Tab stacks excel at allowing for quick organisation while giving you a complete overview right within a single tab bar. Workspaces on the other hand intentionally show you only the tabs you are working with right now, for your given task. They allow you to focus on one thing, without distractions.

It is another feature that demonstrates the ethos of Vivaldi, that people are different. Some people will prefer stacks, others may find workspace to be more efficient. And being Vivaldi, we don’t limit you. You can also have stacks within your workspaces! 🤯

Our recently extended Windows panel will show your collections of tabs in a tree like structure, and make it easy for you to move tabs between windows, workspaces and tab stacks.

Workspaces can be created via the new workspace button in the tab bar, and since our UI is fully configurable you can remove it or put a button in any of the toolbars or panel instead.

Workspaces also link up to all our other features. You can assign keyboard shortcuts or mouse gestures to switch between them or manipulate them as part of a collection of chained commands (e.g. perhaps you want to switch themes when switching between workspaces).

With workspaces we wanted to give you yet another option for tab management, in a browser that is already packed with tab management options!

Welcome! It’s time for another sneak-peek post, where you can get to know more about the great people behind Vivaldi. Today, we’re talking to the developer, music lover and football fanatic Guðmundur Már Gunnarsson, or as we call him: gmg.

Part of the team working in Iceland on Vivaldi Mail, gmg is not just a talented developer, he’s an invaluable source of information for any colleague seeking details about the Vivaldi Mail client and more. 

Let’s find out a little more about him and see what he has to share with us!

🚀 What do you love about working at Vivaldi?

In a world focused on profits, I am so happy to be able to work for a company that puts their users and values before profits.

💪 What are your favorite productivity features in the browser?

In the Vivaldi Mail client, I like that I can see all my mail accounts at a glance. And by marking mails as read when I’m done with them, I can also use my mail client as To Do list.

My Vivaldi.net CalDav calendar is also very practical, as I can use it with the Vivaldi Calendar client on desktop and sync it to my phone using DAVx⁵. My phone then shows me my next calendar item on my home screen. 

Another productivity feature that I often use is the option to create different profiles for different things, such as school, streaming and work. I can then open links in the profile I choose. (See tip 83 for more!)

💡 What is something thing you’ve learned so far?

The easy looking bugs are sometimes just rabbit holes in disguise.

🤩 What else should we know about you?

I love working with kids, so I manage a sports school for 2-6 year olds on Saturdays. I’ve also worked as an outdoor camp counselor, a football coach, and a preschool teacher, to name just a few. I also like to keep busy – I am currently studying law in my spare time, play football a few times a week (when not injured 🤕), and love making music, as I studied music software, piano and organ for years. 

Obviously gmg has a lot of pastimes, from the professional to the playful. He is also passionate when it comes to the Vivaldi Mail suite with Calendar and Feed Reader. Autocomplete the domain and then any sub path

In this snapshot we are trialing a change. Instead of autocompleting to full URLs in one go, we now autocomplete on domains first. After this subsequent characters will still match on the most popular paths below this domain. This gives slightly more priority to quickly accessing the homepage of the domains you visit. However you can still easily view any favored subdirectories. Let us know how you find the change in the comments below.

From time to time, we ask heavy users of Vivaldi to share their experience using Vivaldi.

The latest is Kazuhito Kidachi, the CTO of Mitsue-Links Co., Ltd. in Japan. At work, his primary focus is on front-end design and implementation, as well as developing related guidelines. Due to his extensive knowledge of browser specifications and accessibility considerations, he is a contributor to various media outlets.

Given his background, we wanted to know how he perceives Vivaldi’s approach to accessibility. However, we were also interested in his views on browser accessibility in general, and he was happy to share his thoughts with us.

Let’s go!

Recognizing the importance of web specifications 

As a university student, Kazuhito had a part-time job for a year writing HTML and creating corporate sites. 

After graduation, he entered the space industry, working as a webmaster for the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA), an agency that became the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).  

At the time, the National Space Development Agency of Japan had a mission to raise general awareness of space development. And Kazuhito was part of the team that broadcasted a rocket launch over the internet for the first time in Japan.

At that time, he didn’t really care about specifications. When coding, he felt that as long as it displayed as expected, it was fine. However, after getting to know a colleague with a deeper understanding  of HTML, he began to realize the importance of web standards. This also inspired a shift in his perspective toward the user – and how to enable more people to use what he created in various environments.

While web standards permeate, accessibility is a work in progress

When Kazuhito first joined Mitsue-Links on a temporary basis in 2004, the browser wars were in full swing, with multiple browsers vying for supremacy. So, it was an interesting time for him to play a leading role in web standards both inside and outside the company. 

He explains, “I wanted to create a world where all browsers display the code as intended, without the hassle of having to write different code for each browser type and version.” And accessibility remained front of mind for him.

After all, accessibility simply means “ease of use”. The easier, or more accessible, content is, the more people, regardless of disability, age, language, device, or browser, will be able to enjoy it in more ways. Everyone benefits, both the content provider and the user.

As Chromium has gained dominance, web creators are finally in a situation where they can develop based on a single web standard. As Kazuhito remarks, “However, this situation has led to the dark age when the competition of browsers has stopped.”

And, as competition has died down, he feels some browser developers aren’t putting enough thought into accessibility. He raises a flag, “Accessibility is still a work in progress. The current situation is that the entire industry is not working on it with the same enthusiasm as web standards.” 

He continues, “It has become difficult to expect innovation in browsers. I believe that conforming to web standards is the minimum requirement for a browser to function. Browsers focus a lot on gaining market share. It would be great if they could be just as competitive when it comes to ease of use and customizability of the browser itself. In the digital age, not just the web, it is easy to customize things. However, most browsers aren’t delivering on these functions.” 

He concedes that it is possible to write user stylesheets to customize web content to make it easier for users to view and use. However, this requires knowledge and understanding of CSS, which can be too high a hurdle for some.  And some browsers don’t open up that feature to users in the first place.

Vivaldi’s accessibility features outperform those from other browsers

Kazuhito believes that providing customizability is key for browsers to be genuinely competitive. And he points out that Vivaldi is ahead of other browsers in this regard.

“Vivaldi is standard and highly customizable, unlike other browsers. You can see the hand of Vivaldi CEO, Jon von Tetzner, in this, as accessibility has always been an important factor for him,” he says.  Vivaldi’s users themselves are more proactive and can change the display of content to make it easier for them to see and use. 

His favorite element in the UI is the Zoom gauge at the bottom-right of the browser. It is there by default and is in the user’s line of sight so that they can quickly adjust it to display larger text. Even people without a high degree of digital literacy can zoom in or out quickly by moving the slider.

“In addition, the page actions near the gauge are excellent. It is very convenient to call up various customization functions centered on filters immediately, and it is a design concept that sets it apart from other browsers,” adds Kazuhito.

Kazuhito notes that general users are not always aware that they can customize how webpages display. This has a particular impact on mobile, where users could get stressed constantly having to pinch out to display large characters.

Since he feels accessing web content should be stress-free, he thinks browsers should evolve to actively support customization by users. And, since users can actively customize the display in Vivaldi, they can get the most out of their time on the web.

Accessibility overlays have become a hot topic in recent years. It’s about making web pages more accessible with third-party tools. However, Kazuhito doesn’t think the add-on approach is best. He wants the browser to act as an intermediary between the user and the content. So, in his view, customization features such as those provided by accessibility overlays should come standard on browsers. Kazuhito would like Vivaldi to set itself apart from other browsers in that area.

And he believes that the existence of such a user-friendly browser will ultimately further the development of the web:

“Unlike recent Chrome and Firefox UIs that pursue clean minimalism, Vivaldi’s UI reflects the idea of ​​being close to the user, so I respect it. We live in an era where the evolution of browsers will greatly influence the evolution of the web. We will think of better and better ways to improve browsers together. As for me, I believe that Vivaldi is the best, and, for that reason, I will continue to use Vivaldi.”

Custom icons

With this snapshot we introduce theme support for custom icon sets for all toolbar icons. You can change just a few icons to tweak your favorite theme or produce a full set and make a completely new look and feel for Vivaldi. Go ahead and emulate the look of some other software, or come up with an entirely unique design. And your new themes can be uploaded to our themes site for others to enjoy. If design is not your strong point, you will be able to download the themes that others have uploaded.

We have also updated the default icon set. Let us know what you think! As part of that change we also altered the default layout of icons (for those without customisations). If you have made changes but would like to see how things now look for new users, start a clean “standalone” install or back up and temporarily move your user data folder (preferences).

In addition to the new default look, we have a handful of example themes for you to try, to get a taste of what is possible.

• Minimal Feather (small stroke icons)
• Internet (a throwback to another era, big and colorful)
• Win 95 (inspired by the colors and icon style of the classic OS)
• Hand Drawn (hand drawn style)
• Knobs (thick beveled icons for you to click)
• Thin Panel (older style, ‘thinner’ panel icons for anyone feeling nostalgic)

Mail drag and drop

We have now added the ability to drag and drop mails between folders, in addition to previous methods of moving mail such as context menus. Additionally you can drag mails to change some state or property, such as dragging to unread to mark them as such, or dragging to a label or flag to apply those. The nature of mail allows for fairly complex combinations, such as mail moved across accounts, from offline to online or from virtual representations (like “Received”) to custom IMAP folders. We have tried to handle various situations in what we consider to be the most logical way, however testing and feedback will help us confirm this. So if you use mail, try out this feature and let us know how it works for you.

The last few years have thrown some curveballs. A pandemic, a war, and widespread tech industry layoffs – to name a few.

Despite all this, there is hope and opportunity on the horizon for women in tech in the future. Think of new jobs, exciting career paths, and opportunities to explore where areas of passion intersect with technology.

And a lot depends on your work environment. The Vivaldi work environment strives to be inclusive, where people and ideas are respected and heard, regardless of gender, sex, ethnicity, religion, or other considerations.

From trailblazers like Ada Lovelace, whom many consider the first female computer programmer, Grace Hopper, who found the first bug (literally a moth in a computer), and the other brilliant women who’ve created a path for women in tech, today we’re lucky to have three amazing women building Vivaldi on Android, a fun, productive and powerful browser.

“It might sound cliché but I’ve been inspired by Marie Curie and Ada Lovelace all the time. What they achieved in the old days when there was no space at all for women in the scientific world is something that still helps us, modern women. “Now, when I think of someone who has inspired me, I feel I owe a lot to the people around me because I learn from them. There have been very interesting people who I have studied and worked with. One of them is Patricia Aas who I studied with at the University. These days, I learn a lot from my colleagues like Maria and Nagamani.

“Adapting to new situations leads to learning new skills. When I joined Vivaldi during the pandemic, I had to work with my new colleagues remotely. Initially, I found it very challenging, but I quickly realized that everything is possible with the right set of people and a spirit of good collaboration,” Nagamani says.

“When it comes to people who I admire, I must admit that I’ve always been inspired by Sudha Murthy. She became the first female engineer hired at India’s largest auto manufacturer TATA Engineering and Locomotive Company (TELCO) which only hired male engineers at the time. She co-founded Infosys and is a great philanthropist and an amazing author. Her simplicity is a major inspiration to me,” she adds.

Every day we come across brilliant women who inspire people to reimagine how technology can transform lives.

And, each year for International Women’s Day, the United Nations selects a theme. This year is “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.” It highlights how crucial technology is to advancing rights and calls attention to a growing digital gender gap that is impacting everything from women’s job opportunities to safety online.

Last week, Mercedes announced that Vivaldi would be available in their new E-Class! We have been working with the Mercedes team for quite some time now. And we were very excited about this announcement.

Even though we were involved in the project, we didn’t know much about the details of the cars Vivaldi will be offering. So, I was super excited when they invited us to take a first look at the interiors of this shiny, new car at the Mercedes Benz Research and Development Facility in Sunnyvale, California.

A quick word of thanks to our friends in Mercedes Germany for making this happen.

To get to the venue, I took my beloved 15-year-old Louis Garneau bicycle. I like driving, especially getting to trails, camping, and other outdoor fun but I prefer biking when I can. For now, my wheels are old school, but I’ve recently started thinking about converting it to an E-bike.

From Palo Alto, I arrived at the Sunnyvale station and prepared to hop on my bike. I was tempted to take a quick detour to this great Japanese okonomiyaki place called Rokko. Highly recommended!

But I was too eager to feast my eyes on the new Mercedes! 

I recorded a fun video narrating my experience checking out Vivaldi in action at the Mercedes Facility Centre.

And I have to say that I’m very impressed. It is a terrific car with an excellent sound system and many advanced features but most importantly Vivaldi browser works great on the large vividly lit superscreen.

Drivers and passengers will be able to run Vivaldi side-by-side independently from one another on their respective screens. This is a great feature because often the main screen might be occupied for essential tasks such as navigation or controlling different aspects of the vehicle. With the dual screen, the passenger can still browse using Vivaldi while the main screen is in use for other operations.

Vivaldi is currently the only browser on Android Automotive OS and has been available on a growing list of cars. At its core, it is essentially the same full-featured web browsers that you have on your Android-based smartphones. It gives you complete control of how it looks, feels, and works, just like our mobile and desktop browser family.

There are other apps as well such as TikTok, Angry Birds, collaboration app Webex, and Zoom, all available alongside the launch of the new E-Class.

Plus a new selfie and video camera will let drivers take photos and videos or join web conferences— while the car is stationary.

We are really looking forward to working along with the Mercedes Team to do a lot more – an experience that the users can enjoy while keeping their privacy and safety at the forefront!

Work or play, people today live in their browsers. That is why we’ve made sure that you will enjoy a smooth media experience by adding new options for audio/video. Now, you can keep playing audio when Vivaldi runs in the background and also keep videos from auto-playing.

With Vivaldi on Android 5.7, we offer a faster version that will help save seconds or even minutes. Now, even with thousands of open tabs, the browser starts faster than before.

We also remind you through a new dialog to use our encrypted Sync functionality to protect your data and start browsing from where you left off on any of the devices that have Vivaldi installed.

And, last but not least, we’ve improved our user interface. Now you are able to zoom the user interface which is unique to Vivaldi.

Keep playing audio when Vivaldi runs in the background.

A highly requested feature comes true! Now, you can use Vivaldi to keep any site with audio playing in the background. This is attractive if you are hooked on YouTube. You can continue playing videos/audio even when YouTube is minimized. Even if you’re not subscribed to YouTube Premium.

But Vivaldi doesn’t just let you stream YouTube videos/audio in the background. It lets you play audio from any site in the background.

To enable the feature, go to the General section in Vivaldi Settings and enable the “Allow background audio playback” option. With this disabled, switching to another app will pause the video. With it enabled, you’ll be able to continue hearing audio even as you interact with other apps.

Disable autoplay for video

If you’ve been reading an article while browsing and found yourself startled by an unexpected video, you’ve encountered a site that has what’s called autoplay videos. Often there’s an ad associated with the video.

This option is enabled by default. You can find this option “Autoplay videos” under Settings and scroll down to Site settings in case you want to turn it on.

Vivaldi starts up faster. Even with hundreds of tabs!

It’s way too easy to rack up a series of open tabs. One minute you’re researching flights, hotels, and attractions for an upcoming trip. The next thing you know, you might find yourself 100+ tabs deep.

Whether this backlog of open tabs impacts performance will depend on your device and how you’ve set up your browser. But we want to make sure that, no matter how you choose to browse, your experience should be smooth. So we’ve made Vivaldi faster – thanks to a lot of under-the-hood browser improvements.

Using multiple tabs is something many of us do. And for some, the speed of opening a Vivaldi session with many tabs may be perfectly fine. But not for us. We knew that there was room for more speed here.

As a result, you will find that starting Vivaldi with multiple tabs is much faster now. It’s all part of giving you a better user experience.

Vivaldi’s unique user interface (UI) is more scalable.

Usually, mobile browsers are optimized for smartphones but not for tablets. Vivaldi’s UI is designed to work just as well on tablets, Chromebooks, and screens in cars. 

We have put a lot of care and attention into making Vivaldi on tablets just right for you. Vivaldi’s unique UI offers a flexible design with a distinctive side Panel that helps you make the most of available screen space.

Sometimes the scale ratio on a device is too small or too big for easy touchscreen operation, depending on the resolution and other details. We wanted to make improvements in this area for those of you who want the ability to scale the UI on your device.

In this version, you’ll find UI scaling that better fits the context, along with an improved UI zoom. It works well on phones and tablets, but is particularly useful for cars – something we have experienced as the only browser available on Android Automotive in Polestar 2 and 3, Renault’s Megane E-Tech Electric, All-New Austral, and ​​all future cars with the OpenR Link system.

Remember to sync your data.

Sometimes while browsing, you can forget all the benefits of Vivaldi’s various features.

A key example of an overlooked feature in Vivaldi is its encrypted Sync functionality. We want you to get the most from it. So, we have made it easier by adding reminders to enable Sync if you haven’t already done so. These reminder dialogs will appear after browsing with Vivaldi for a certain amount of time – after 10 hours of combined usage of Vivaldi or the third time a user opens Vivaldi.

Clicking the “Enable Sync” button will open Sync Settings. This will help you sync your data across all your devices that have Vivaldi installed, whether on your desktop or other Android devices, including cars.
