DEAR MOM · The Closed Door Series, Letter One

I called it simplifying. I was disappearing.

On a Tuesday in my own kitchen, with a coffee that had gone cold an hour earlier, I realized I had stopped doing it.

I had stopped meeting people for coffee. I had stopped saying yes to lunches I would have said yes to without thinking ten years ago, when ten years ago felt like last week and now feels like another country. I had stopped having people over for dinner. Not because I had decided to. Not because I had planned it. I had simply, somewhere along the way, started saying no without noticing I was saying no.

I called it simplifying.

That was my word for it. I was simplifying my life. I was being more careful with my time. I was protecting my peace. I was being responsible.

I was disappearing.

Midlife is when disappearing in plain sight becomes possible. You can keep the same address, the same phone number, the same picture on the same Christmas card, and disappear so completely that the people who used to know you eventually accept that the woman they used to know is someone who is not coming back. They will not say this out loud. They are too kind. They will simply stop calling. And one day, in your own kitchen, on a Tuesday, you will look up and notice that the silence has been there for a while.

That was the Tuesday I am talking about.

I had been busy with my work, which is real and which I love and which I would defend in a court of law. I was writing every day. I was putting my whole heart into building something. I had been busy with Brian. I had been busy with the things one is supposed to be busy with at this stage — the responsibilities that grow proudly visible the older you get, the ones you wear like a chain of office. I was a Woman With Things To Do. I was, by any reasonable measure, productive. There were lists. There were calendars. There was a perfectly defensible reason I had stopped seeing Ann and Bonnie enough.

The reason was that I was busy.

And here is the math I think a great many of us are running:

There was not that much dust.

I keep coming back to that line. There was not that much dust. The house I had been so busy keeping was not so dusty that it required this much keeping. The errands I was running — and I will be specific, because vague is how we hide from ourselves — the errands could have waited until Saturday. Or until next Tuesday. Or until after the people I love had come and gone.

I had simply gotten in the habit of being too busy to see them.

And the door, after enough Tuesdays of being too busy to open it, starts to feel stuck.

That is the part I am most reluctant to say. I would rather tell you that I made a brave decision and threw the door open. The door was harder to open than it had any right to be. The hinges were fine. The lock was fine. The door itself, when I finally tried it, opened easily.

What was stuck was me.

Too busy makes the door feel stuck. That is what I had to learn. Not that the world had moved on. Not that my friends had given up. The world was right where I had left it. My friends were right where I had left them. Some of them were a little quieter than they used to be — the way friends get quiet when they have been told no enough times — but they were there. The door was a door. It opened.

I was the one who had gotten stuck.

I am not writing this to put more weight on what you are already carrying. The lunches you have not had. The friends you have not called. The dinners you keep meaning to give and then not giving. I am not asking you to add their absences to your guilt. Guilt is not useful at a table. It is not useful here either.

I am telling you this for the same reason a friend tells a friend the thing she has been avoiding. Because the cost of going on without saying it is higher than the cost of finally saying it.

So here is what I want you to consider, plainly, while we are sitting here:

A life is built on Tuesdays.

Not on the holiday tables. Not on the big anniversaries with the linens out and the menu printed. Those are the framed photographs of a life, and they have their place. But a life — the actual fabric of one — is built on the Tuesdays. On the dropping by. On the coffee at four o’clock that runs long because the conversation ran long. On the casserole nobody asked for, brought over because she heard you were having a week.

That is what a life is. The closed door does not keep out the photographs. It keeps out the Tuesdays.

And the Tuesdays are the part that matters.

We were eating together long before we were doing anything else together. It is what we have always done first when something is broken, and what we have always done first when something is being celebrated. We open a door. We feed each other. We sit down.

The closed door does not keep out grief, or sickness, or the years that pass. It only keeps out the people who would have walked through it with you.

I want you to hear that.

The closed door does not keep out the hard year you are bracing for. It does not keep out the news, when bad news comes, or the slow ordinary attrition of time, which comes for all of us, ready or not. It only keeps out the people who would have brought soup. Who would have sat at your kitchen table while you cried and not said anything wise about it, because they knew there was nothing wise to say. Who would have told you that you were not the only one going through that particular thing. They were going through it too. You had no idea, because the door had been closed too long.

That is what the closed door takes.

I know what it costs to admit this. I know that the busyness has its own momentum, and that it is genuinely easier in the short run to keep saying no than to figure out how to start saying yes again. I am not pretending this is simple. I am only telling you, from my own kitchen, that it was simpler than I had let myself believe. The door was a door. It opened. The friend on the other side of it was glad to see me.

She was, in fact, the version of glad you only get when someone who used to call and stopped calling shows up at your kitchen table on a Tuesday and asks if it is too late to come in.

It is not too late.

If you have been keeping a door closed and calling it simplifying, this is your invitation to consider what you have been simplifying out of your own life. If you have looked around at your house lately and decided it is not ready, I will save you the suspense: it never will be. The house is not the variable. The dust is not the variable. The ready is not an address. It is a decision, and it is yours to make, and you can make it on a Tuesday.

Make it on a Tuesday.

Call the friend you have been meaning to call. Tell her you have been gone for a while. Tell her you are sorry. Then ask her what she is doing for dinner this week. Open the door. The hinges are fine. The lock is fine. You were the one who was stuck.

You can be unstuck on a Tuesday too.
