Use cases

How this reminder can be valuable to you:

  • As a boyfriend, you may want to get alerted on Valentine's Day to not forget to buy flowers for your sweetheart.
  • If you're a (better) boyfriend, you may want to get alerted two weeks before Valentine's Day in order to book a table in a nice restaurant.
  • Or, you can help others (who don't use follow.it) — e.g. to remind your buddy to buy flowers for his girlfriend.

What's Valentine's Day anyway?

Valentine's Day is a holiday that puts emphasis on love, and is celebrated world-over, in most cases on February 14. However, the name, date, and even the length can vary depending on the location on the globe, so much so that one tradition can look completely unrelated to the other.

Who was this guy Valentine, and who declared the holiday?

We don't know the true identity of "the one and only" Valentine, but there are several candidates. One story talks about a priest from third-century Rome, who was punished for illegally marrying couples, as marriage was deemed to be a "distraction" for soldiers who were "of more use" on the battlefield.

Per another legend, one Valentine's life ended tragically after he helped Christians escape prison in Rome. He allegedly sent the first-ever "Valentine" letter — from inside the prison walls.

So even centuries ago, love was attached to that name, but only in the 14th century did Valentine's Day officially become a holiday associated with love.

How much do people care about Valentine's Day?

People do care about Valentine's Day, that's a fact. Per some estimates, more than 114 million cards are sent out each Valentine's Day. Here are more fascinating facts that might interest you:

  • Mass production of Valentine's Day cards started mid-19th century in the US, and it hasn't stopped since.
  • Shakespeare's "Juliet" receives thousands of letters in Verona, Italy every year, and volunteers from the Juliet Club respond. Ultimately, the "Dear Juliet" prize is awarded to one author.
  • In 2020, Americans spent over 20 billion dollars on Valentine's Day gifts, and per some estimations, men on average spent more than double what women spent.

Just how much do traditions differ?

Valentine's Day, in one form or another, is celebrated all across the world, with some exceptions. Argentinians call their "Valentine's Day" a "Sweetness Week" — yes, a week — and they actually celebrate love in July, while in Bulgaria, on February 14th, the love is complemented with a nice glass of wine (St. Trifon's Day).

Traditions truly vary, but one thing is common: everybody wants to be reminded in time, and follow.it enables you to do just that. You are only a click away from making sure that you will be ready to show your sweetheart, a family member, or a friend just how much you care.
