In this line of work, we’re often invited to see all sorts of motor shows. The kind where the latest automobiles are unveiled to a specific region—sometimes even the world. They’re as straightforward as they get, and anyone who’s ever been to one knows how similar these expos are.

But Automechanika Frankfurt was unlike your typical motor show. It focuses on the business-to-business (B2B) side of the automotive industry rather than the business-to-consumer side. Yes, it’s one of the biggest shows in all of Europe, but it’s also not exactly the kind that not just I but also our readers are used to. In a nutshell, the overall experience was both challenging and eye-opening.

Challenging both physically and mentally. The event is held at Messe Frankfurt, one of the absolute biggest venues I’ve ever been to. A total of 300,000sqm comprising a dozen halls with multiple floors each—just walking through all of the displays was tiring, let alone trying to digest each one.

Then there’s the mental fatigue. Some of the booths were quite technical, so understanding the displays alone was taxing, but there’s also the task of sifting through all of them to look for specific content that could be of interest to our readers. Automechanika Frankfurt was host to some of the newest and latest technologies in the aftermarket industry, and while plenty of what I saw piqued my interest, I knew it wouldn’t be the same case for the average Internet user.

All that being said, given just how massive the show was, the challenge was more than bearable. This year, there were 4,400 exhibitors from 80 countries, so you could just imagine the range of car parts and accessories available for every visitor’s perusal. The five-day trade fair also hosted 112,000 visitors from 173 countries, recording nearly an 8,000 increase in attendance compared to 2024.

“Not only has the mood been extremely positive throughout this intensive five-day trade fair, but there has also been a visible increase in the number of exhibitors and visitors. The leading international B2B flagship trade fair demonstrated its importance for the entire automotive aftermarket value chain,” said Detlef Braun, member of the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt GmbH. “In total, 66% of trade visitors came from abroad and 34% from within Germany. We are particularly pleased with the 18.5% increase in the number of German trade visitors.”

Apart from the lines upon lines of booths, Automechanika Frankfurt 2026 also welcomed new introductions, including the Pit Lane, which showcased some of the most exciting cars of the show. Most notably, there were a couple of BMW drift cars there that also headlined the daily drift show that event-goers were able to enjoy.

A bunch of classic cars also showed out during the show, including a Mercedes-Benz 190E Evolution II and a couple of HWA examples. Of all the vintage four-wheelers I saw, these were the most eye-catching. Eye-watering, even.

There was also the Experience Park, which was an off-road display filled with machines, cars, and even merch. There was a space where visitors could hang out and enjoy food and beverages from the trucks at the show. It was also where some products were properly showcased, and it also added a vibe that none of the other indoor displays could’ve achieved.

In addition to all these, there were also various workshops held throughout the week. These included training sessions that gave event-goers an idea of what types of occupations were available in the automotive trade. In total, Messe Frankfurt tallies more than 500 micro events across the many booths and displays.

Personally, though, one of my favorite sections of the show was the Ambition booth. This was where the show aimed to reel in a younger audience and get the youth more into automotive. It was one of the biggest surprises for me—they had a Ferrari F40, a McLaren Elva, and a Mercedes-AMG One on display. There were also some classic Bimmers and a few Benzes here and there, but really, these three were the real cherries on top of the large cake that was Automechanika Frankfurt 2026.

I did say the show was also eye-opening, because I saw some of the latest technologies that I had never seen before. There were robot arms changing tires, repairing windshields, and painting cars. Automation was everywhere, and I was able to get an even better picture of where this industry is headed.

But not just that—the aftermarket is also feeling the changing automotive landscape, and it’s something you won’t realize until you take a proper, closer look at it. As more customers from across the world continue to shift from ICE vehicles to EVs and hybrids, the demand for parts and accessories, and even aftersales services, is evolving. Electrification is driving the aftermarket industry, as noted by Frost & Sullivan’s Aftermarket and Digital Retail Mobility research manager Benson Augustine.

Augustine highlighted that China, one of the biggest automotive markets in the world, has reached the ‘electrification tipping point’ where EV shares have breached the 50% mark in terms of market share. This is just one example, but it gives you an idea of just how greatly the trends have shifted. This will determine the types of products and services the aftermarket will need in the years to come.

Not to get too technical and heavy with all the numbers and figures, but what I’m trying to point out is that it’s not just the market for new vehicles that we should keep an eye on. Manufacturers of products such as tires, wheels, and brakes will have to adapt to the changing times. Battery technology could become currency in the years to come. Heck, even the types of car-care services that companies provide will also be affected by electrification. There are plenty of both potential growth areas and restraints, but what I’m sure of is that these will be exciting years ahead for the aftermarket industry.
