Satellite imagery has revealed the scale of destruction across Iran following recent airstrikes by the United States and Israel.

The images show damage to military bases, naval ports and nuclear facilities, while some civilian infrastructure has also been affected.

The war began on 28 February, and since then, Iran has experienced a major internet blackout.

Because of this, satellite images have become one of the few ways to understand what is happening on the ground. The images analysed by the Sky News Data and Forensics team indicate that several strategic military targets have been hit.

One of the main targets was missile bases. Satellite images showed heavy damage near the Ahmad Kazemi barracks close to Isfahan. Buildings at the site that were damaged on 1 March appeared completely flattened in images taken on 3 March. Another missile base near Kermanshah was also reportedly hit.

These bases are believed to be part of Iran’s underground “missile cities”, which are tunnel complexes built inside mountains to store ballistic missiles such as the Sejjil.

Naval facilities were also targeted.

Satellite images reportedly showed damage at the Konarak naval port near Chabahar, where buildings were destroyed, and an Iranian ship appeared to have sunk. The port is close to the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

At the naval base in Bandar Abbas, satellite images showed smoke rising from the Iranian vessel IRIS Makran after a strike. The ship is considered Iran’s largest naval vessel and serves as a floating base.

Satellite imagery also indicated damage at the Natanz Fuel Enrichment Plant, Iran’s main uranium enrichment facility. According to Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, centrifuges at the site were likely severely damaged in earlier strikes.

A Sky News report said that civilian areas were affected. Iranian officials claimed that more than 150 people were killed when a girls’ school in Minab was hit during the strikes.
