We’ve managed to dodge recent fine weather, enjoying 2 overcast and chilly Thursdays – patches of sunshine and showers thrown in for good measure – along with a penguin ice sculpture, found over at the compost bins. Nevertheless, we’ve been busy – preparing beds, seed sowing, and planting out the first of this year’s crops.

After last week’s balmy conditions, it was back to chilliness on Thursday, though the sun did take the edge off a bit. The grass got a first mow of the year, just a gentle trim rather than a full-on scalp, All the stumpy willows were coppiced, and the lengths trimmed – ready for weaving into the windbreak next week.

Well, after all the struggles through the season so far we have arrived at the week of the show. Daffodils are in bloom in streets, country lanes and urban gardens everywhere. It has been a peculiar season once again.

However we may have something to put on the show-bench if the strong winds and bright sunshine are kind to us.
