Yep, quilting cotton. Don't be lured in by too pretty a pattern, though as it will be chopped up. Also less of a headache if you don't choose an obviously directional print.

Crikey, such a lot to learn Thank you all so much, yet again. It sounds as though diagonal quilting is the way to go when (if) I get there. I'm going to investigate wadding and backing now - assume the binding is OK made from quilting cot...

Aaand...never use bias binding.Always cut your Binding strips straight, join any strips that need it, diagonally and mitre the corners.

I would go diagonally from corner to corner of each square - you have something to aim for all the time and are less likely to go off piste.I never, ever do stitch-in-the-ditch because it is horrendously unforgiving and I have never managed to make it...
