An anti-Kremlin group released drone footage on Thursday it claimed to show Russian military equipment being destroyed in Russia's Belgorod region. The video was released by the Freedom of Russia Legion, which says it was formed in spring 2022 'out of the wish of Russians to fight in the ranks of the armed forces of Ukraine against Putin's armed gang'. The anti-Putin volunteers also released a video announcing further plans to fight on the territory of the Russian Federation

A US Senate hearing burst into laughter after Oklahoma Republican senator Markwayne Mullin said 'I don’t want reality' during a session on race and education. Mullin was questioning a witness about whether a book meant to teach children about racism was appropriate for early learning classes. After his remark prompted laughter in the hearing room the senator said he 'misspoke' and returned to hectoring his witness, Cheryl Morman, president of the Virginia Alliance for Family Child Care Associations

Flood water blocked a road in north-eastern Spain on Wednesday as several provinces remain under a heavy rain alert. A powerful current flowed down to a main road in the Catalan town of Sant Pere de Ribes, forcing cars to turn around. At least 20 provinces across Spain were given a rain warning on Thursday, with the central Castile and León region the most threatened during the day, the Spanish meteorology agency said

Fans celebrated late into the night after Sevilla beat Roma 4-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Budapest to lift the Europa League trophy for a record-extending seventh time, handing Roma manager José Mourinho his first defeat in six European finals. A Malaysian climber narrowly survived after a Nepali sherpa guide hauled him down from below the summit of Mount Everest in a very rare high-altitude rescue, a government official has said. Gelje Sherpa, 30, was guiding a Chinese client to the 8,849-metre (29,032ft) Everest summit on 18 May when he saw the Malaysian climber clinging to a rope and shivering from extreme cold in the area known as the death zone, where temperatures can dip to -30C or lower. Gelje hauled the climber 600 metres down from the Balcony to the South Col over a period of about six hours, where Nima Tashi Sherpa, another guide, joined the rescue.

One year ago, Bruno Pereira, a Brazilian Indigenous expert, and Dom Phillips, a British journalist and longtime Guardian contributor, were killed on the frontline of the battle to protect the planet.

They were ambushed on the Amazon’s Itaquaí River while returning from a reporting trip to the remote Javari valley region. The attack prompted international outcry, and cast a spotlight on the growing threat to the Amazon posed by extractive industries, both legal and illegal, such as logging, poaching, mining and cattle ranching.

Today, we launch the Bruno and Dom project, a year-long collaborative investigation coordinated by Forbidden Stories that involves more than 50 journalists from 16 media organisations in 10 countries around the world.

José Mourinho praised his players despite his Roma side's defeat on penalties to Sevilla in the Europa League final but criticised Anthony Taylor's refereeing in a match which saw 13 yellow cards shown players plus three for Roma's staff. Three people including a child were killed in an early morning missile attack on Kyiv that hit apartment buildings, two schools and a children's clinic, according to Ukrainian authorities. Most of the damage appeared to be from falling debris after the incoming missiles were intercepted by air defences. The attack, on what is International Children's Day in many post-Soviet countries, hit after only a few minutes' warning. Nearly 500 children have been killed in attacks in Ukraine since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022

José Mourinho escalated his verbal attacks on the referee Anthony Taylor after Roma’s Europa League final defeat by swearing at him in a car park while calling the English official “a disgrace”. Mourinho was filmed shouting abuse at Taylor in English and Italian in the VIP car park before leaving the Puskas Arena in Budapest. Towards the end of about 50 seconds of criticism he walked up to the passenger door of what appears to be the van in which Taylor was to be driven away. The Roma manager could face punishment from Uefa for his conduct there and in the press conference after Roma lost on penalties to Sevilla.

Australia’s most decorated living soldier, Ben Roberts-Smith VC, murdered or was complicit in the murder of multiple unarmed civilians while serving in the military in Afghanistan, a federal court judge has found. The ruling came after a landmark, year-long defamation case after three newspapers accused the former soldier of being a war criminal, a bully and a domestic violence perpetrator. The judgment is not a criminal finding of guilt, but a determination on the civil standard of the 'balance of probabilities'

The House debated legislation to increase the US debt limit until January 2025, before passing the bill by a vote of 314 to 117. Republican representatives passed the bill overwhelmingly. Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York, the Democratic leader, praised Democrats for pushing back against 'extreme Maga Republicans' before Kevin McCarthy took to the floor claiming the bill would deliver the 'largest savings in American history'. The White House tactically avoided pushing back against the line to avoid inflaming the hard right. 'Tonight, we’re gonna give America hope,' McCarthy said

Five people have been killed and 19 injured in the shelling of a village in Russian-occupied Luhansk region, according to Russia-installed officials. Footage from the village of Karpaty showed extensive damage at a poultry farm and a camp where construction workers were staying. According to the officials, four missiles were fired from a Himars unit of the Ukrainian army, striking the village. There was no immediate response from Ukraine. Luhansk has been effectively controlled by Russia since 2014 and was illegally annexed by Russia in 2022

Negotiating with Vladimir Putin could take priority over a war crimes trial if he is the only person the west has to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine with, Emmanuel Macron has said. Speaking at a security summit in Bratislava, the French president said that 'if in a few months to come we have a window for negotiations, the question will be arbitrage between a trial and a negotiation, and you have to negotiate with the leaders you have de facto, and I think negotiations will be a priority'. He said that in the meantime evidence against Russia and its leaders should be assembled

A camera mounted in a vehicle captured the moment parts of what appeared to be a missile fell on a busy street in Kyiv on Monday, the day Russia launched an intense daytime missile barrage at the Ukrainian capital. The falling missile parts appeared to hit a line carrying traffic lights, narrowly missing cars that were driving on the multilane road. The Ukrainian military said it had intercepted all 11 of the ballistic and cruise missiles fired at the city in the attack that began at 11am. A timestamp in the dashcam footage showed the debris hitting the road at 11:22am.

A day after Russia accused Ukraine of sending drones to attack buildings in Moscow, the governor of Russia’s Krasnodar region said a drone was the probable cause of a fire that broke out at the Afipsky oil refinery. The fire was soon extinguished and there were no casualties, said the governor, Veniamin Kondratyev. The Afipsky refinery is not far from the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, near another refinery that has been attacked several times this month

The minister for Indigenous Australians, Linda Burney, says 'we can see the goal on the horizon' after the constitution alteration bill passed the House of Representatives 121 to 25. A Chinese fighter pilot performed an 'unnecessarily aggressive maneuver' near an American surveillance aircraft operating over the South China Sea last week, a US military official has said. The incident – which the Pentagon says is part of a pattern of behaviour by China – comes at a time of already heightened tensions between Washington and Beijing over issues including Taiwan and an alleged Chinese spy balloon that was shot down after traversing the United States earlier this year. The Chinese plane 'flew directly in front of and within 400 feet of the nose of the RC-135, forcing the US aircraft to fly through its wake turbulence' on Friday, the Indo-Pacific Command (IndoPaCom) said in a statement

The Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes turned herself in for an 11-year prison sentence, marking a final chapter in a years-long fraud saga that riveted Silicon Valley. The 39-year-old tech founder entered the minimum-security, federal women’s prison camp located in Bryan, Texas, on Tuesday afternoon. Holmes had been out on bail since she was indicted on fraud charges in 2018 over her role as the head of the failed blood-testing firm. She was convicted in November 2022 on four counts of defrauding investors and sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison

Moscow has been targeted with a large-scale drone attack for the first time in its 15-month war in Ukraine, marking a new inflection point in a conflict the Kremlin said would never threaten the lives of ordinary Russians.

Video posted on social media early on Tuesday showed a drone flying over houses in the city’s Rublyovka district or flats in south-west neighbourhoods.

The Russian defence ministry said eight drones targeted the city overnight but Russian media close to the security services wrote that the number was many times higher. At the same time, Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, faced its third air raid in 24 hours
