while eye contact is important, its not meant to be literally deep gazing into one's irises. You wouldn't be able to see the signs that way! Journey into the Deaf-World by Lane, Hoffmeister and Bahan. Still amazing book which gives lot of great insight into Deaf community (mostly USA).
