Many of these buildings also come with a feature that is easy to overlook: a lifting system, or the structure to carry one.

Clear height: the distance from the finished floor to the lowest obstruction, such as roof trusses, ducts, lighting or sprinkler pipes. Remember that the hook needs headroom above the load, and the crane itself needs space above the runway rail.
Span: the distance between runway centerlines, which is usually tied to column spacing.

It is lighter than a double girder design, so it places lower loads on runway beams and columns. Typical ranges, such as 1 to 32 tons and spans of roughly 7.5 to 31.5 meters, cover many workshop and assembly applications.

Where higher capacities, longer spans or heavier duty cycles are required, a double girder overhead travelling crane offers greater lifting capability and more hook height. The trade-off is added weight and a taller crane profile, so the existing structure needs a careful check.

Underslung (under-hung) cranes

When headroom is limited or there are no existing crane columns, an underslung overhead travelling crane can be hung from the roof structure or a dedicated support frame. This avoids the need for separate runway columns, but it places direct load on the roof, which must be verified.

Free-standing crane structures

If the existing frame cannot carry additional load, an independent steel structure can be built inside the building to support the crane runway. The new frame carries the crane loads to new foundations, leaving the original columns and roof untouched. This approach is common where the original building is protected or structurally fragile.
