From a young age, Dr. Anirudh Gupta enjoyed considerable freedom to make choices on his own, whether minor daily matters or significant ones. Additionally, his parents and ancestors served as inspiring figures, demonstrating principles of integrity, generosity, and compassion for others. Raised amid such surroundings, he internalized these ideals and upholds them even now. As the sole offspring in his household, he developed a keen awareness of impending duties, prompting him to approach life with deliberate focus.

Academically, he earned a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, followed by a postgraduate qualification in global commerce and economics. He further obtained a law degree and completed various programs at the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad and Harvard University, while committing to ongoing skill enhancement.

The World as Classroom

When presented with a chance to explore Dr. Anirudh Gupta’s entry into school administration and the timeline behind it, he revealed – “I developed a distinct perspective on superior education and primary-to-secondary systems gradually, observing broader transformations and progress in the sector.” He further noted, “Crucial aspects such as specialized knowledge, enthusiasm for evolution, courage in reinvention, sharp reasoning, and non-traditional tactics frequently fell short.” In response, he explored more than 30 countries, amassing knowledge about effective teaching approaches, incorporating electronic resources, novel instructional strategies, improving safeguards and guidelines, and encouraging collaborative governance among staff. As the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns posed severe challenges to schools nationwide, the DCM Group of Schools faced the same pressures, yet emerged remarkably resilient. Recognizing the urgency of technological readiness long before the crisis, and driven by the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Dr. Anirudh Gupta introduced his now-famous phrase – “digitise or perish.”

He devised a comprehensive strategy requiring every teacher, regardless of subject, level, or specialization, to achieve digital proficiency. Under his guidance, the team rolled out targeted training programs that began with essential skills, from email communication to creating slideshows, and even handling office documents. Digital capability was soon incorporated as a formal metric in staff evaluations. Building on these foundations, a dedicated drive launched in 2016 successfully established complete IT literacy throughout all DCM campuses, years in advance of the global health emergency.

Thanks to this proactive integration, the shift to online operations occurred within seven days following the March 23, 2020 restrictions. DCM stood among India’s initial adopters of sophisticated systems like Microsoft Teams, surpassing basic options such as video conferencing alternatives. This readiness not only facilitated swift remote setup but also enabled support for numerous external institutions and groups, offering guidance on educational apps for tasks, extracurricular pursuits, and digital gatherings beyond mere lesson delivery.

As the CEO

As CEO of the DCM Group of Schools, Dr. Anirudh Gupta follows a distinctive leadership approach. He observes that many leaders assign duties to their teams while retaining control themselves. In contrast, he practices what he calls “leading from the back”, where he delegates real authority to his colleagues while shouldering the ultimate accountability. This method allows staff members and officials to experiment, learn from errors, and contribute their unique perspectives, ideas, and creative solutions across different areas of work. By granting genuine decision-making power and breathing room, he taps into collective knowledge and sparks greater motivation, drawing out peak performance from the team.

His broad worldview has given him deep insight into global practices. This awareness of advancements in the West and elsewhere equips him to introduce fresh perspectives and innovative thinking to the organization. At the same time, he firmly believes in leading from the front through example. When he expects commitment from others, he demonstrates it first by stepping up himself. For nearly 27 years, he has consistently put in 12 to 14 hours of focused work each day without interruption. Looking ahead, Dr. Anirudh Gupta envisions a purposeful role for the DCM Group of Schools, an institution with an 80-year legacy which is carrying forward a grand identity of being one among India’s earliest school networks. Over the coming two decades, his focus centers on aligning the group’s efforts with India’s Vision 2047, contributing meaningfully to the realization of Viksit Bharat, a developed and vibrant nation, while preparing the younger generation to lead the country confidently into its centenary of independence.

Central to this ambition is nurturing tomorrow’s citizens with essential knowledge, practical abilities, and forward-thinking mindsets. A key initiative in this direction is the establishment of India’s first dedicated entrepreneurship school, named DCM Young Entrepreneur School in Ludhiana.
