Huawei unveiled its P60 Series flagship phones in China. The lineup consists of three models: the Huawei P60, the Huawei P60 Pro, and the Huawei P60 Art.

All three phones feature a 6.67-inch LTPO OLED screen with FHD+ resolution and variable refresh rate that ranges from 1 to 120Hz, Huawei’s ultra-durable Kunlun Glass, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 with 4G chipset, which is an LTE-only version of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoCC, and Harmony OS 3.1 out of the box.

The main difference between the variants lies in their camera systems. The Huawei P60 has a triple camera setup on the back, consisting of a 48MP main camera with a variable aperture lens, a 13MP ultra-wide camera, and a 12MP periscope telephoto.

The Huawei P60 Pro has a similar main and ultra-wide camera as the P60 but upgrades its telephoto camera to a 48MP sensor with OIS. The sensor has a 90mm equivalent lens with up to 3.5x optical zoom and up to 100x digital zoom.

And lastly, the Huawei P60 Art has a unique design with an island-shaped camera module on the back. It also has a different ultra-wide camera than the other two models with a 40MP ultra-wide lens.

All three models also have a 32MP selfie camera on the front and also support Huawei’s XMAGE imaging platform with XD Fusion Pro texture engine that can enhance light sensitivity and dynamic range for better photo quality.

The Huawei P60 series also differs in its battery capacities and charging speeds. The Huawei P60 has a 4815mAh battery that supports 66W wired charging and 50W wireless charging.

The Huawei P60 Pro has the same battery capacity but supports faster charging speeds of up to 88W wired charging and up to 50W wireless charging. And the Huawei P60 Art has a larger battery capacity of 5100mAh with up to 88W wired charging and up to 50W wireless charging.

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has issued a warning to driving schools that charge exorbitant fees for theoretical and practical driving courses. Starting mid-April, LTO will impose maximum prescribed rates for driving schools nationwide.

LTO Chief Jay Art Tugade issued a strict warning to any driving school that charges too much or fails to comply with the approved Memorandum Circular No. JMT-2023-2390 or “Omnibus Guidelines on the Accreditation, Supervision, and Control of Driving Institutions, and the Standardization of Driver and Conductor’s Education.” The omnibus guidelines will take effect on April 15, 2023.

According to Tugade, supervision and control of driving institutions, and the standardization of driver and conductor’s education, the maximum fee for a 15-hour theoretical driving course (TDC) should be P1,000.

For an eight-hour practical driving course (PDC), the maximum fees should be P2,500 for motorcycles, P4,000 for light vehicles such as cars, and P8,000 for heavy vehicles like trucks and buses.

Tugade said that these rates would reduce the driving school fees by over 50 percent and make them more affordable and accessible to more Filipinos. He also said that these rates would still be fair to driving schools that have invested in their facilities and equipment.

The LTO chief warned that violators would face sanctions such as fines ranging from P50,000 to P100,000 depending on the number of offenses. They could also face suspension or revocation of their accreditation if they repeatedly overcharge students.

LTO also shortened the required number of days for applicants to complete the mandatory 15-hour TDC from three days to two days within a month. The first day would consist of seven hours while the second day would take eight hours.

Applicants would have to register their biometrics before and after every session for attendance purposes. At the same time, driving institutions are required to maintain an attendance sheet for their students.

After completing the course and passing the final exam of the TDC, and the 8-hour PDC, the applicant will be given a Certificate of Course Completion in real-time, electronically transmitted to LTMS through the Driving Institution Portal.

The LTO said that these new guidelines aim to improve driver education standards in line with its road safety advocacy. It also urged applicants to enroll only in accredited driving schools that comply with its policies.

Nothing unveils its fourth product, the Nothing Ear (2). Founder Carl Pei says this time, they focused on improving the sound and design.

The second generation Nothing Ear (2) now offers wireless Hi-Res Audio adding 24-bit LHDC codec, along with AAC and SBC. It’s powered by 11.6mm dynamic drivers and offers up to 36 hours of playback (including the case) with ANC off, and up to 22.5 hours with ANC on.

The earbuds come with light resistance to dust and water, thanks to an IP54 rating. It also features dual connection, allowing users to connect to two devices at the same time, with the device intelligently switching to whatever’s active.

Nothing has improved the design, rebuilding the case with stronger, pressure-resistance materials. The buds remain roughly the same size as the first generation. The product as a whole is also lighter.

As for the ANC, it has been upgraded as well. It still cancels up to 40db, but with a better frequency range of 5000Hz. Moreover, Adaptive Mode is also added which detects distractions in the environment and adjusts accordingly. Meanwhile, noise cancellation is tailored to the exact shape of its user’s ears.

OPPO launches its foldable clamshell flagship, the OPPO Find N2 Flip, in the Philippines. It has been quite some time since the brand brought a flagship to the country and a flip phone at that.

Moreover, the OPPO Find N2 Flip is priced at ₱49,990, which undercuts the Samsung Galaxy Flip4 (priced at ₱58,990 for the 128GB variant), disrupting the flip phone market and challenging the reigning foldable king Samsung.

The OPPO Find N2 Flip doesn’t particularly bring anything new to the table, but it does bring several upgrades that make it stand out, compared to the Samsung Galaxy Flip4.

This makes the phone very ergonomic, giving it a very good hand feel.

Our review unit is in Emerald Green, a mesmerizing colorway with a look that resembles natural marble. It retains its predecessor’s color-changing ability, now in its second iteration called the Photochromic 2.0 technology, which transitions to a darker green hue when exposed to sunlight.

The AMOLED display measures 6.78 inches with a full HD+ resolution and a small punch-hole cutout for a 50MP Eye AF vlogging selfie camera. The display is bright and vibrant with deep blacks, and excellent color reproduction, while the colors are not overdone. This makes watching videos a treat. The handset has Widevine L1 certification, so Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+ all stream at FHD quality.

The top and side bezels of the screen are very narrow, which gives it an expansive viewing experience. Meanwhile, the bottom bezel has almost the same thickness as the other bezels, giving it a more uniform and premium look.

The back of the phone features a large rectangular camera module that houses three cameras and the right light called Aura Light Feature flash. The module has a matte metal finish, offering a stylish contrast to the shiny rear panel.

The vivo V27 5G stands out with powerful cameras, supported by the Aura Light. The camera system all works together to ensure picture-perfect portraits in any lighting condition.

The smartphone has four cameras in total: a 50MP OIS Ultra-Sensing primary camera, an 8MP ultrawide camera, and a 2MP macro camera on the back, and on the front, a 50MP Eye AF selfie camera.

The 50MP OIS Ultra-Sensing Camera uses a Sony IMX766V sensor. The sensor is a customized version of the IMX766, jointly developed by Sony and vivo. It is a Quad Bayer sensor with a size of 1/1.56 inches and a 1.0um pixel size, and OIS+EIS Dual Ultra Stabilization that allows it to capture more light while reducing motion blur, even in low light conditions. The results: Clear and vivid photos with high dynamic range.

The phone also has an 8MP ultra-wide camera and a 2MP macro camera on the back for different perspectives. The ultra-wide camera has a 16mm lens with an f/1.4 aperture, while the macro lens has an f/2.4 aperture and a focusing distance of 4cm.

The primary camera has impressive quality with accurate colors and good detail. So much so that dare I say they rival flagships.

At the front, the vivo V27 5G has a 50MP Eye AF vlogging camera that can take clear selfies with rich details, for a poster-like image. It supports autofocus and can zoom in and crop without losing quality.

One of the vivo V27 5G’s main features is the aura light portrait system, which consists of three elements: the aforementioned Sony IMX766V sensor with optical image stabilization (OIS), the ring LED flash dubbed Aura Light Portrait that adds brightness to low-light selfies, and a portrait mode that enhances facial beauty and bokeh effects.

The aura light portrait system is designed to create natural and charming portraits with vivid colors and details. It works by detecting ambient light and then smartly adjusting the brightness of the aura light to illuminate the subject.

To use the aura light portrait system, choose Portrait Mode on the Camera app and toggle the flash symbol to turn the aura light on. and start shooting.

Closing Remarks

The vivo V27 5G delivers on its promise of being the “Aura Portrait Master.” It has one of the best cameras I have seen on a non-flagship phone in a while. Moreover, it is a good-looking device that stands out from other smartphones in its price range.

The 50MP Sony IMX766V sensor on the primary camera and the Aura Portrait Algorithm Feature offer excellent performance, creating stunning photos in various scenarios that can go toe-to-toe with flagship phones that are three times its price tag.

What’s more, the 3D curved screen, its slim body, and a color-changing Photochromic 2.0 element add up to push the phone towards premium status.

With that, vivo V27 5G comes highly recommended for anyone looking for a stylish and powerful smartphone. The cameras and design alone, in my opinion, are worth the price of admission. The rest is just icing on the cake.

vivo has just launched the vivo V27 Series, composed of the vivo V27 5G and vivo V27e, featuring the Aura Portrait Algorithm. Today, our focus is on the vivo V27 5G, which boasts a stunning 50MP Ultra-Sensing Camera, an eye-catching Photochromic 2.0 Emerald Green color, and an ultra-thin grip.

We’re going to take a quick look at the phone and share our thoughts and first impressions as we build up to a full review.

Inside the Box

The unboxing experience of the vivo V27 5G is nothing special. The packaging is a silver-colored box with vivo’s branding.

Inside the box, the handset comes with a standard set of accessories. Missing, though, are the USB-C wired earphones and/or a USB-C to headphone jack dongle. Otherwise, everything is in order.

First Impressions

Opening the box, you’re greeted by the vivo V27 5G unit. And the first thing you’ll notice is its size. The handset’s 6.78-inch AMOLED display is larger than most in the same price range.

The phone has a minimalist aesthetic and an ultra-thin grip with a thickness of just 7.36mm. It also boasts a 60-degree curved screen and a 3D back panel that blends smoothly into the 2.3mm thin frame. On the hand, the handset is very ergonomic and comfortable to hold.

Our review unit, in Emerald Green, is mesmerizing to look at. The design resembles natural marble. It retains its predecessor’s color-changing ability, now in its second iteration called the Photochromic 2.0 technology, which transitions to a darker green hue when exposed to sunlight.

The AMOLED display measures 6.78 inches with a full HD+ resolution and a punch-hole cutout for a 50MP selfie camera. The display is bright and vibrant with deep blacks, and excellent color reproduction, while the colors are not overdone.

The top and side bezels of the screen are very narrow, which gives it an almost full-screen viewing experience. Meanwhile, the bottom bezel has almost the same thickness as the other bezels, which allows for a more uniform look.

On the back of the phone, we have a large rectangular camera module that houses three cameras (the 50MP OIS Ultra-Sensing primary camera, 8MP ultra-wide, and 2MP macro lens) and the Aura Light. The module has a matte metal finish, offering a stylish contrast to the shiny rear panel.

The vivo V27 5G also promises to deliver impressive performance with its MediaTek Dimensity 7200 processor. It has a large memory capacity of up to 12GB RAM (with an additional 8GB extended RAM) and up to 256GB of storage. It also supports fast charging with up to 66W. The battery capacity is 4600mAh.

That’s it for my first impressions of the vivo V27 5G. So far, they are positive, especially the cameras which I am very fond of. Watch out for our full review, coming soon.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT is one of the most advanced and popular chatbots in the world. Powered by a massive language model called GPT, it can generate coherent and engaging content in the form of a conversation about various topics. You can imagine how much time and money was spent to create the chatbot, but what if you could make something similar for a fraction of the cost?

Well, that’s what a group of Stanford scientists did with their project called Alpaca 7B. They cloned ChatGPT for only $600 (roughly ₱32,800+), and “fine-tuned” the open-source LLaMA 7B language model using OpenAI’s GPT API.

The result? Alpalca AI exhibited many behaviors similar to ChatGPT and even outperforms it slightly on some tasks. The researchers were surprised by how well it performed given the relatively small amount of instruction data it received. They also claimed that the chatbot was comparable to GPT-3.5.

However, it is not without flaws. The researchers acknowledged that it “suffered from several common deficiencies of language models such as hallucination (making up facts), toxicity (being rude or offensive), and stereotypes (reinforcing biases)” more than ChatGPT.

As impressive as Alpalca is, the project showed how relatively easy it was to replicate ChatGPT with minimal cost and effort. It also raises questions about the safety and ethics of creating such chatbots without proper supervision and regulation. As more companies and researchers develop their own versions of artificial intelligence, we might see more clones like Alpaca 7B emerge in the near future.

HONOR unveiled a new budget smartphone. Meet the HONOR 70 Lite, which features a Snapdragon 480+ SoC, a 90Hz display, and a 50MP camera for a low cost.

The HONOR 70 Lite features a 6.5-inch HD+ LCD display with a resolution of 1600×720 and a refresh rate of 90Hz. It has a waterdrop notch housing an 8MP selfie camera.

The smartphone is powered by an 8nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 480+ chipset with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Battery capacity is 5000mAh with 22.5W fast charging support.

At the back, a triple camera setup with a 50MP primary camera is arranged in a square module. The secondary cameras include a pair of 2MP sensors for depth and macro.

The phone runs on Magic UI 6.1 based on Android 12. It also has a side fingerprint scanner, a headphone jack, and support for hi-res audio.

The HONOR 70 Lite comes in three colors, Ocean Blue, Titanium Silver, and Midnight Black, priced at £199.99 in the UK, which is around ₱13,400+ or $245.

The REDMAGIC 8 Pro+ is crowned the most powerful Android smartphone on AnTuTu’s Top 10 Best Performing Android phones list in February 2023.

The rankings are based on the average scores of the devices tested on AnTuTu Benchmark V9, and the models must have a minimum of 1,000 data samples to be included.

The top spot was taken by REDMAGIC 8 Pro+ after scoring an impressive 1,304,235 points on the AnTuTu Benchmark app, surpassing the second-placed Vivo X90 Pro+, which had 1,280,652 points. The gaming smartphone boasts a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, 18GB of RAM, and a 165Hz AMOLED display.

The third place goes to the iQOO 11, another Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-powered device that features a 6.78-inch AMOLED screen, a 50MP triple-camera setup, and 120W fast charging support.

In the Philippines, REDMAGIC has amassed a solid following in the gaming community. Most recently, ZTE Philippines launched the REDMAGIC 8 Pro in the country with a starting price of ₱42,999.
