Built for Battle: We Remember

September 11, 2001, is one of those days when almost everyone who lived through it remembers exactly where they were.

For me, I was at work with my dad. My mom had taken my sister to a doctor’s appointment, so I had gone to work with him. Someone came into his office and said, “Mike, a plane just flew into a building.” There was an old TV in the entryway that we normally used for training videos. We turned on the news, and I remember watching as the second plane hit the World Trade Center.

At that moment, we knew this wasn’t an accident. America was under attack.

I remember the uncertainty that followed. The Pentagon was hit. Another plane went down in Pennsylvania. Gas stations filled with lines. People wondered what might happen next. Then, in the days that followed, I remember looking up and seeing those perfectly blue skies with virtually no airplanes overhead.

Twenty-five years later, I still remember.

But September 11 also reminds us of something else. In some of America's darkest hours, we saw incredible courage. Firefighters ran toward buildings while others were running away. Police officers, first responders, military personnel, and ordinary Americans stepped forward to help people they had never met.

We were reminded that courage isn't the absence of fear. Courage is deciding what matters more than your fear.

That's what it means to be Built for Battle.

The battles we face today may look different. They may happen in our families, businesses, churches, communities, or inside our own hearts. But difficult moments reveal what we've built our lives upon.

Faith: When everything around us feels uncertain, our foundation has to be bigger than our circumstances.

Business: Leadership matters most when things don't go according to plan. In a crisis, people aren't looking for panic. They're looking for someone willing to stand up, make decisions, and lead.

Legacy: Someday people won't remember everything we accomplished, but they will remember how we responded when life got difficult.

On this September 11, we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost. We honor the heroes who ran toward danger. We remember the families whose lives were forever changed. And we remember the men and women who answered the call to serve in the years that followed.

Never forget.

And when your own battle comes, remember: you were built for this.
