Nigeria has taken a major step towards reclaiming its place at the centre of African sports after World Boxing approved the country as host of the African Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, putting Nigeria at the heart of the continent’s race for Olympic boxing glory.

The decision, approved by the World Boxing Executive Board at its meeting in Glasgow on July 30, places Nigeria among a select group of countries entrusted with major stages of the LA28 qualification pathway. The African tournament is expected to take place in 2027, although the final hosting agreement is still subject to Nigeria completing key documentation.

For Nigerian sport, however, the significance is already enormous.

It means that when Africa’s finest boxers begin the final push for Los Angeles, Nigeria is set to become the continent’s Olympic boxing gateway.

The World Boxing announcement lists Nigeria alongside the United States, China, the European Games in Istanbul and Samoa as the approved hosts of the five continental Olympic qualification tournaments. Italy and Hungary will host the two World Qualification Tournaments that complete the global pathway.

And the stakes could hardly be higher.

The African qualifier will feature seven men’s and seven women’s Olympic weight categories, with 14 direct Olympic quota places available — one in each weight category. World Boxing’s event guidelines envisage leading African nations battling across eight days, with the tournament expected to attract a large field of elite boxers from the continent.

For Nigeria, this is not simply about putting on another international sporting event.

It is an opportunity to put Nigerian boxing, Nigerian athletes and Nigerian sporting infrastructure under a continental and global spotlight.

A new Olympic road runs through Nigeria

The development comes at a particularly important moment for Olympic boxing.

The International Olympic Committee has approved World Boxing’s qualification system for LA28, with 248 Olympic places available across 14 weight categories — seven for men and seven for women. LA28 will also be the first Olympic Games to feature gender parity in boxing, with 124 male and 124 female quota places.

For African boxers, the continental tournament in Nigeria will therefore represent one of the most important opportunities on the road to Los Angeles.

The qualification journey begins with the 2027 World Boxing Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, followed by continental qualification events and two World Qualification Tournaments in Italy and Hungary.

That makes Nigeria’s role particularly significant.

The country will not merely watch African boxers chase Olympic dreams.

It will provide the stage on which 14 of those dreams can become reality.

Nigeria’s boxing renaissance

The hosting decision is also a vote of confidence in the direction of Nigerian boxing.

The Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF), headed by President Wale Edun, has placed increasing emphasis on grassroots development, athlete development and creating stronger structures for the sport. The federation identifies athlete, coach and official development, national competitions and grassroots participation among its core objectives.

NBF Vice President Omonlei Yakubu Imadu has described the provisional hosting approval as a major opportunity for Nigeria to strengthen its boxing programme and demonstrate its capacity to stage major international events.

The significance goes beyond the ring.

A successful hosting could mean international exposure for Nigerian boxers, greater attention to the sport, opportunities for local officials and coaches, increased commercial interest and a chance to inspire another generation of young Nigerians to pick up the gloves.

Abuja prepares for the big stage

The MKO Abiola National Stadium Velodrome in Abuja has been proposed as the venue for the tournament, although the final hosting arrangements are yet to be completed. Nigeria must still provide the remaining documentation, including formal government support, before the hosting agreement is finalised.

That caveat notwithstanding, World Boxing’s decision sends a powerful message about Nigeria’s standing within the organisation.

And there is already a broader story behind it.

Nigeria hosted the inaugural African Boxing Congress and Boxing Gala Night in Lagos in December 2025, bringing representatives from more than 20 African federations together and further strengthening the country’s position within the continent’s boxing administration.

The latest development therefore feels less like an isolated announcement and more like another piece of a larger Nigerian boxing revival.

More than hosting — a chance to qualify

Perhaps the most exciting part for Nigerian sports fans is what the tournament could mean for Team Nigeria.

While hosting does not automatically hand Nigerian boxers Olympic qualification, it gives the country’s fighters the rare advantage of competing for Olympic places on home soil.

Fourteen African boxers will leave the continental tournament with direct LA28 quota places — and Nigeria will hope some of those places belong to its own fighters.

That creates a compelling target for the NBF, its coaches and athletes: build a team capable of turning home advantage into Olympic qualification.

Nigeria has a proud boxing history at the Olympics, and the country’s sporting memory is filled with the exploits of fighters who carried the green and white into the world’s biggest sporting arena.

Now, as Los Angeles 2028 begins to take shape, a new generation has an opportunity to write its own chapter.

And remarkably, the road to Los Angeles may begin right here at home.

From Lagos to Abuja, from the grassroots to the Olympic ring, Nigerian boxing is being given another chance to shine.

World Boxing has put Nigeria on the continental Olympic map.

Now it is up to Nigerian boxing to make the opportunity count.
