NESS United has been “overwhelmed” with interest after becoming the third club in Shetland to start its own women’s football team. The South Mainland side has joined Delting and Whitedale in formally starting a women’s team, with two training sessions being held already.

Following the article in the Shetland Times (13 August) regarding the Shetland Islands Council chief executive’s approach to the proposed meeting of the Shetland Recreational Trust and Shetland Charitable Trust, Save Scalloway Pool Action Group wish to voice our deep concern and disappointment on how this was done.

A PLANNING officer’s recommendation to approve permission in principle for new houses in Trondra was “disregarded” by councillors, according to an appeal application. The applicant’s agent also claimed that elected members “appeared unfamiliar with the council’s own objectives and future policy direction”.

THE WINNERS of this year’s Young Shetland Writer competition have been announced by Shetland Library. The 2026 theme ‘The Map’ inspired 361 submissions from across the isles. Stories ranged from characters getting lost in computer games, to discovering clues on secret treasure maps, and with a few mythical trows and njuggles encountered along the way.

It is now the second time that I have been hit this year with Loganair cancelling flights due to adverse weather. This time the cancellation was due to fog. Read more
