Yesterday, the Galaxy A52 5G started getting the March 2023 security patch in more than a dozen countries across Asia and Europe. Now, not to be left behind, the US carrier Galaxy A52 5G models are receiving the same March 2023 update.

The new security patch for the Galaxy A52 5G in the USA, model number SM-A526U, is attached to firmware version A526USQS7EWC1. Aside from improving security, the update doesn’t bring any changes to One UI or Android OS, as confirmed by the firmware number.

Through this new update, Samsung and Google have addressed over 50 security vulnerabilities, so, as the adage goes: better to be safe than sorry. You should download the new update on your US carrier Galaxy A52 5G as soon as it is available.

Samsung has the low-cost smartphone market locked down. It’s the only Android OEM to reach the top 10 list of best-selling smartphones, all thanks to low-cost Galaxy A devices. In terms of high-end phones, Samsung leads the Android smartphone segment, yet Apple still has better traction than all other OEMs, especially in western markets, where the company has a grip on the Gen Z.

A recent study show that more and more Gen Z customers, that is, people born between ~1995 and 2010, prefer iPhones over Android phones. Apple is steadily growing its iPhone userbase, while Android is losing ground, particularly in western markets and the high-end/premium price bracket.

37% of iPhone users in the USA are Gen Z, while Samsung only has 10% of Gen Z customers on its side of the fence. Meanwhile, 70% of so-called zoomers in the USA say they’ll never use an Android phone (via Digital Information World). And herein might lie the problem for Samsung as well as Google.

Is Samsung losing to Apple? Or is Android losing to iOS?

Samsung’s biggest enemy in its quest to sell more high-end phones in western markets might not be its hardware or Apple’s competitive products but Android OS itself. No other Android smartphone manufacturer realistically competes with Samsung, yet the company is losing ground to Apple in the eyes of the zoomer generation.

Interestingly though, Gen Z users don’t seem to dislike Samsung as much as they dislike Android. Granted, many young customers seemingly flock to iOS because of social pressures driven artificially by things such as the green-blue chat bubble segregation spearheaded by iMessage, or by AirDrop remaining exclusive to Apple devices. But these social pressures aside, zoomers seem more reluctant toward Android itself than Samsung’s hardware.

Sadly for Google – and now Samsung – Android OS doesn’t have the best reputation among Gen Z customers. Over the last decade, it seems as though the Android brand may have been tarnished in part by cheap, low-quality phones developed by OEMs in China and by the custom Android launchers they use, which are often buggy, unstable, and don’t benefit from great support and reliable firmware update roadmaps.

In addition, Google doesn’t have the strongest pull on Gen Z. It’s not a brand whose reputation is growing among zoomers, 40% of which prefer searching the web using social platforms instead of the Google search engine. Google just isn’t cool among Gen Z smartphone users, and the company isn’t getting any better in this regard.

All in all, Google’s reputation isn’t helping Android, and in turn, it might be gradually eating away at Samsung’s smartphone business across the premium price range in western markets.

Can Samsung and Google do anything to win back the hearts of zoomers?

Assuming that Samsung and Google even care about Apple’s increasing influence over Gen Z customers, they don’t seem to have a solution yet, or at least, not one that is paying off as of now.

Idealistically, one possible solution could be for Samsung to distance itself from the chipped reputation of Android and develop its own mobile OS with innovative features and the highest-possible security standards. One designed to compete with iOS on every possible level, from app support to capabilities and the cool/social factor.

Realistically, Samsung developing its own mobile OS to combat iOS is likely unattainable without spending massive resources and taking very high risks. Creating a mobile OS from the ground up in this day and age is extremely risky and time-consuming. Not to mention that Samsung would need great partners and app developers to jump on board the project to ensure the platform’s success. And needless to say, if we view the Galaxy Store as a pilot leading to that, the future doesn’t look very promising.

More realistically, if Samsung and Google want to combat Apple in the Gen Z market space, they may have to pull their resources together and collaborate more closely than ever, all the while paying less attention to the needs of smaller Android OEMs that don’t have a chance at competing with Apple anyway.

Perhaps the best way to go about this is for both Samsung and Google to rebrand in a big way. Create a new mobile OS together — or a very ambitious fork of Android — boasting great and attractive services and features that would remain exclusive to Samsung while leaving the traditional Android OS and AOSP behind for other, smaller OEMs to toy with. Call this new OS something else that’s not “Android,” and make it a more integral part of the Samsung experience.

Maybe the Pixel phones would have to go away for this to happen, but maybe that’s a risk Google should be willing to take under the right conditions. And perhaps Samsung Group’s other affiliates would lose a few clients from China in the process. But hopefully, in exchange, they’d gain a client with a stronger pull on the market, i.e., Samsung Electronics itself.

In the end, Samsung is the only real partner Google has in the smartphone world

Samsung’s One UI is arguably the best implementation of Android OS, and in my opinion, it’s the only one that matters and has a chance in front of the Gen Z audience. As such, the Korean tech giant should influence the direction in which this new OS co-developed with Google would go. Because, compared to Google, Samsung has a better chance of creating a hardware ecosystem through smartphones, TVs, and PCs, and it should have a big say in how this new OS would work to ensure cross-device capabilities similar to iOS.

For example, Samsung’s fantastic Quick Share enables seamless file transfer between Galaxy mobile phones running Android and Windows Galaxy laptops. Other Android manufacturers don’t come close to offering anything like this out of the box. And Google has yet to create close-enough ties with Microsoft to make Android and Windows as powerful of a combination as iOS and MacOS.

Whatever the solution is, Android and the Android Open Source Project don’t seem to be the answer to winning Gen Z customers in the current landscape and defeating Apple. Customers seem to value security and a consistent experience across device types and device generations rather than having the option of picking between countless Android phones, neither of which excels or seems cool enough in the eyes of most Gen Z customers.

And why would they? These devices will be replaced a year later by sequels with little regard for continuation, and the majority of them seem designed out of desperation to stand out in a crowded and fragmented market or look better than Samsung in press renders.

Perhaps it’s time for Samsung and Google to unite, allow themselves to stand apart from the rest of the Android world, and level up to the next big thing.

Things are getting better for the Windows operating system. More apps and services are being launched for Microsoft’s PC operating system. The extremely popular instant messaging platform, WhatsApp, has launched its new app for the Windows operating system, bringing improved design and features.

The newest version of WhatsApp for Windows claims to load much faster than the previous version. It also has a new UI design that’s similar to the smartphone version of WhatsApp. The new app also allows group video calls with up to eight persons. It also supports group audio calls with up to 32 participants. The Meta-owned instant messaging platform said that it would continue to increase that limit in the future.

WhatsApp for Windows now supports full end-to-end encryption for calls and messages, similar to the company’s Android, iOS, and macOS apps. The company said in its blog post that the app now supports faster app data syncing and device linking. The new app for Windows now also supports link previews and stickers.

Samsung’s camera software came under scrutiny recently after the Galaxy S23 Ultra fueled a heated debate concerning zoomed-in photos of the moon and whether or not they’re fake. Engineers believe that Samsung’s moon photos are real, but even then, the meaning of the term “real” can be debated. Now Samsung’s mobile photography is back in the headlines, again for the wrong reasons, as someone discovered that using the Gallery app’s “Remaster picture” feature can have rather unsettling results.

Twitter user @earcity shared a side-by-side comparison of a remastered and non-remastered photo of their seven-month-old daughter. And although the Remaster feature in Gallery has overall positive results (it can even erase snot), the AI also gets confused and seems to go too far with its clever editing, replacing the baby’s tongue with teeth. The end result is not only unrealistic but quite unsettling.

The Verge tried replicating this issue using a different photo of a baby, and sure enough, they reached a similar conclusion. Perhaps their example is not as extreme, but still exhibits the same odd behavior wherein the AI decides to cover the subject’s tongue with fake teeth, even when said subject is a baby young enough to be toothless.

Fortunately, the Remaster option is just that. An option. Meaning it’s not enabled automatically. Users have to look for it deliberately in the “More” menu when viewing a photo inside the Gallery app, and if they choose to select the option, they then have to wait a few seconds for the AI to remaster the photo. Once the AI processes the photo, users get a “Before / After” slider and can decide whether they prefer the original or save the new version to their Gallery.

Still, it’s no good excuse for the AI to be photoshopping teeth onto a picture of a seven-month-old baby, so Samsung may want to look into its Gallery AI and figure out how to prevent these disturbing images from scaring parents away from the otherwise useful “Remaster photo” feature.

These results are indicative of the fact that even the top-tier Samsung models will be subject to an escalated price structure, largely led by Apple.

Smartphone brands are selling fewer budget and mid-range phones than they have in the past, while phones in the $1,000 range are experiencing a surge in sales. The logical consequence of this trend is reflected in the current market.

Samsung fails to capitalize on the Chinese Market, study says

Apple saw a 6% year-on-year uptick in sales for the premium smartphone market, capturing three-fourths of total sales in the segment. The iPhone maker benefited from the decreased sales of Huawei in China, with Samsung trailing behind with a 5% decrease in year-over-year (YoY) sales in 2022.

The lack of substantial footprints in China forestalled the full benefit of the commercial opportunity offered by the region for the South Korean electronics giant. Nonetheless, Samsung has seen a lot of interest in its foldable smartphones, capturing a majority of the foldable market in 2022.

To be clear, the title of the chart below includes the notation “(≥$600)”, which pertains to wholesale pricing of phones as opposed to retail. Counterpoint Research accounts for this factor in market analysis to ensure accuracy, as retail pricing tends to vary significantly around the globe.

Despite the cause, the reverberations of this news will be felt throughout the industry. OEMs will focus on developing and promoting high-end products, resulting in fewer mid-range device offerings. Arm Holdings (ARM), the UK-based firm responsible for semiconductor chip designs utilized in over 95% of all smartphones worldwide, including Samsung’s, is looking to change how it charges brands for its chip designs. This change in business strategy comes ahead of the company’s preparation for the IPO (Initial Public Offering) in New York this year, Financial Times reported Thursday. The SoftBank-owned company has already alerted numerous major customers of the pending shift to its preceding business structure, as evidenced by industry sources and ex-staff members.

Apparently, ARM is looking to modify its royalty system, discontinuing the practice of charging chipmakers based on the value of the chips and instead shifting to a device-value-based model. This policy shift is anticipated to significantly increase the amount of revenue generated for every design sold, as the monetary worth of the average smartphone is substantially higher than a single chip. Arm is going to customers and saying, “We would like to get paid more money for broadly the same thing,” a former senior employee told Financial Times.

Major firms such as MediaTek, Unisoc, Qualcomm, Xiaomi, and OPPO have been apprised of the impending price alterations. Also, it is thought that the company is looking to procure a minimum of $8 billion through a remarkably successful US Stock Market launch anticipated to take place in the current year.

How would the price change affect Samsung… And you of course

Samsung’s System LSI division has developed the Exynos series of ARM-based system-on-chips, which are manufactured by Samsung Foundry. Exynos and Snapdragon are two chips typically incorporated into Galaxy phones, both based on ARM chip designs. An increase in the cost of ARM chip designs would mean that Samsung would have to pay extra, and likely, this cost may then be passed on to the consumer. However, it remains to be seen whether Samsung will take this route or find another way to cover the additional expense.

Furthermore, Samsung is reportedly aiming to challenge Apple’s proprietary silicon technology by creating its own advanced processors for use in smartphones and personal computers. With this move, the South Korean tech company will gain control over the entire design and optimization process, akin to Apple’s departure from Intel. This effort is being spearheaded by an internal team and headed up by Rahul Tuli, a former AMD developer. Therefore, instead of continuing to utilize Arm for its Exynos processors, the shift towards in-house design should allow Samsung to construct higher-spec chips.

Huawei announced that its latest attempt at rivaling the Galaxy Z Fold series is coming to China this week. Indeed, the Huawei Mate X3 was just announced in China today, and the initial impressions are positive, in that the phone seems to tick many right boxes required by a Z Fold contender. However, it’s also backed by fake official renders and pushes a proprietary expandable storage format developed by Huawei.

First, let’s have a quick look at the positives. Samsung was the first to bring water resistance to foldable phones, but Huawei’s new Mate X3 is now following in the company’s footsteps with an IPX8 rating. Furthermore, the phone also has a waterdrop-style hinge that borrows ideas from Samsung’s Flex Mode.

Another upgrade the Huawei Mate X3 seems to have over the Galaxy Z Fold 4 — and supposedly the upcoming Z Fold 5 — consists of larger screens. The Mate X3 has a 6.4-inch outer panel and a 7.85-inch foldable screen. But it’s worth noting that the Huawei Mate X3 still doesn’t have a stylus.

Plus, the device weighs 239 grams and measures 5.3mm when unfolded. In contrast, the forthcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5 is rumored to have a 6.1mm thickness and tip the scales at 254 grams.

All this makes for a promising rival to Samsung’s dominant Galaxy Z Fold series, but the Mate X3 appears to have one more ace up its sleeve. Namely, it is equipped with a 5x periscope telephoto camera. However, not everything is roses.

Huawei is not entirely truthful about its new foldable phone

These specs may sound impressive, and the phone looks even more so in Huawei’s official renders showcased on stage. Sadly, that’s only because the company appears to have heavily modified its renders to show a much thinner bezel than the phone actually has (courtesy of a couple of keen-eyed Twitter users).

Needless to say, Huawei appears to be overselling the Mate X3 in some areas. Sadly, this seems to be a common practice among Chinese OEMs when it comes to their renders, and even Samsung was caught doing similar things in the past on occasion — although not to this extreme. It’s a shame and begs the question: what else is Huawei hiding or lying about?

In any case, the Huawei Mate X3 will likely remain exclusive to China, so whether or not it actually is a worthy rival to the Galaxy Z Fold series shouldn’t matter too much for Samsung — at least not in western markets — regardless of whether or not the bezels are as thin as Huawei would like you to think they are.

Huawei is trying to push its own proprietary memory cards

As far as raw specs are concerned, the Mate X3 is powered by the same Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 as the Z Fold 4 and has 256GB or 512GB of storage and 12GB of RAM. The Z Fold 4 is also available with 1TB of storage, whereas the Mate X3 caps out at 512GB but offers expandable storage. However, once again, there’s more to this than meets the eye.

Nano memory (NM) is a proprietary memory card format developed by Huawei, and the Mate X3 relies on it for expandable storage. In other words, customers aren’t getting a traditional microSD card slot but have to buy into Huawei’s proprietary format if they want to extend the storage on the Mate X3. Quite tricky.

Some may argue that nano memory is better than no expandable storage at all. It may be true, but it doesn’t change the fact that the Mate X3 seemingly has expandable storage instead of a 1TB version for an ulterior motive, i.e., to help Huawei sell and promote the NM format.

As for Samsung, the company is expected to unveil its next phone in the series, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 — likely without expandable memory — later this year at Unpacked in August-September.

The pace at which WhatsApp has been gaining new features has improved in the recent past. This group admin control feature will also be available inside the community and accessible to all. Also, WhatsApp will now let you see common groups that you share with another contact. To know the common groups, all you need to do is search for the contact name in the search bar, and the results will be displayed.

Google started the initial rollout of Google Maps’ Immersive View feature to five cities, London, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Tokyo, in February 2023. While the rollout was going at a steady pace, several users reported that Google Maps Immersive View had arrived in London, but the feature wasn’t mapped out interactively in Berlin.

Now, Google has said that the Immersive View feature will be available in more cities, including Amsterdam, Dublin, Florence, and Venice, in the coming months. With the Google Maps Immersive View feature, users will be able to use a combination of Street View and aerial imagery to view realistic digital representations of the cities where it is available.

Users will also be able to explore the interior of the restaurants, buildings, or places they want to visit, use the slider to change the time of day, and see how the city will look at that time. If the feature is live for your location, then it will appear as the first option in the photo gallery section.

You should be connected to Wi-Fi when you are using the Google Maps Immersive View feature. Because, as per a Redditor, using the Immersive View feature for 30 minutes burns 2GB of data, which isn’t data-friendly if you are on a limited mobile data plan. The feature is still not rolling out at a nice pace, but that is understandable because Immersive View requires a sheer amount of data to be able to digitally represent a city so that users can interact with it.

Samsung completely overhauled its laptop strategy with the launch of the Galaxy Book lineup in 2021. Last year, the company refined a few things, bringing OLED screens to its laptops with the Galaxy Book 2. Earlier this year, the South Korean firm launched the Galaxy Book 3 laptops with more powerful chips, higher resolution and high-refresh-rate OLED screens, and longer battery life. And it looks like consumers loved those upgrades.

Samsung said it sold 2.5 times more Galaxy Book 3 laptops than its predecessors over the same period. The company says that the reception for its new laptop lineup has been “very positive.” Samsung started following Apple’s strategy of making their smartphones the center of the ecosystem, with other devices like Galaxy laptops, tablets, earbuds, and smartwatches chiming in with better integration and features. Learning from its mobile section, the company brought many changes to its laptops, including software efficiency, custom features, and improved connectivity.

The South Korean firm talked about the Galaxy Book 3 Ultra, which offers high performance despite its lightweight design and high build quality. Shim Hwang-yoon, VP and Head of New Computing Hardware R&D Group 2 at MX Business, reportedly stated that the company applied optimization techniques learned from its smartphones to its newest laptops. The Galaxy Book 3 lineup has an improved cooling mechanism for the highest efficiency.

It also used Intel’s ML-based (Machine Learning) tuning and image improvement algorithms from its Galaxy smartphones. Samsung also changed the complete layout of the main board so that the components don’t interrupt the signals from ultra-fast external ports. Samsung also added software features like Quick Share and Multi Control (to share Galaxy Book’s keyboard and trackpad with Galaxy phones and tablets).

For those who always want to reply in the best way possible but run out of thoughts, Google is working on a new feature that will assist you in such situations. According to a new report, Google is working on a new generative AI reply feature for Google Messages that will help you make better replies to text messages.

Found in the latest Google Messages beta version, folks at 9To5Google found out that Google is working on a new, familiar-looking button for the Google Messages app. This button appears next to the emoji button in the composition box. The icon shows the same sparkle icon as used by Bard.

For now, the button merely types ‘TODO!’ into the message composition area, which indicates that the feature is currently under development. In the future, when the generative AI reply feature makes its way to the stable version of Google Messages on your Samsung Galaxy phone or other Android phone, Google will make use of its AI generative tools, either Bard or LaMDA, that underlie the app to suggest better replies.

Do note that tapping on the sparkling button does not automatically send the generated message. It lets you go through the generated message and decide whether that is the message that you wish to send as your reply. Do note that this feature was spotted in the APK Insight post, and there is no clarity on whether the generative AI reply feature will make its way to Google Messages or not.

Last week, Google announced a bunch of new AI features, including generative AI, similar to the popular ChatGPT, that will be integrated directly into Google Docs. And we now have a sneak peek at how the generative AI in Gmail will look on your Samsung or other Android phones.

Google has started testing a limited feature set, and in an APK Insight post, folks at 9To5Google decompiled the latest version of the Gmail app to show how the features look in action. In the Gmail app v2023.03.05.515729449, after enabling the ‘Help me write’ FAB on the compose screen within the app. The ‘Help me write’ button has a wand icon with sparkles.

Tapping on this wand icon of the ‘Help me write’ option opens a text box where you can see the placeholder ‘Tell Gmail what to write for you.’ If you type in a short prompt, then Gmail will ask you to elaborate a bit more. After you have completed your prompt, you need to hit the ‘Create’ button.

In addition to this generative AI feature in Gmail, the email app will get a ‘Refine my message’ feature. Apparently, if you have written something in the email body, you can tap on this ‘Refine my message’ button to let Google improve or clarify the mistakes in the body. You can choose the generated suggestion or opt for another one by tapping on the ‘View another’ option. You can also rate the generated suggestions by giving a thumbs up or down.

Google also showcased the ability to Formalize, Elaborate, Shorten, and Bulletize text. Google is working on all these features, but it has started testing out just the ‘Help me write’ and ‘Refine my message’ in Gmail. Do note that these features were spotted in an APK Insight post, and Google may or may not include one or any of the features spotted in the latest version of the APK.

A few days after launching the Galaxy A54 5G, Samsung has silently unveiled its slightly modified version, the Galaxy M54. The new mid-range smartphone was unceremoniously launched in the Middle East. It brings a higher-resolution primary camera and an even bigger battery while keeping some of the best bits of the Galaxy A54 5G.

Let us check out how it is different from its more premium sibling.

The Galaxy M54 features a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen with Full HD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The screen is bigger than the Galaxy A54 5G, and to support it, the phone has a 6,000mAh battery with 25W fast charging. The phone features a 32MP selfie camera on the front. At the rear, it has three cameras: 108MP primary OIS camera, an 8MP ultrawide camera, and a 2MP macro camera. The phone can record 4K 30fps videos using front and rear cameras.

Samsung has equipped the Galaxy M54 with the Exynos 1380 processor with 8GB RAM, 256GB internal storage, and a microSD card slot (up to 1TB). The memory card slot is hybrid, so you can either insert a microSD card or a secondary nano SIM card. Of course, the phone supports GPS, sub-6GHz 5G, LTE, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, and a USB Type-C port.

The smartphone runs Android 13-based One UI 5.1 software out of the box. It has a side-mounted fingerprint reader but misses out on an IP67 rating and stereo speakers that make the Galaxy A54 5G a well-rounded phone. It has Gorilla Glass 5 protection for the screen, but its frame and back are made of plastic. The Galaxy M54 is available in Silver and Navy Blue colors.

Samsung hasn’t revealed the pricing of the Galaxy M54 yet, but we expect it to hit store shelves pretty soon. The device could be launched in more Asian countries after a few weeks.

Well, it’s finally happened: Samsung’s Galaxy A5x line of smartphones is no longer the middle ground between Samsung’s flagships and its budget phones, at least as far as pricing is concerned.

The Galaxy A54 5G is the costliest A5x smartphone yet. The price tags have gone up each year since the Galaxy A50 launched back in 2019, and the Galaxy A54 5G’s price comes very close to phones from a segment in which you can find many ‘flagship-killer’ devices, both from Chinese manufacturers and Samsung’s own backyard.

In India, for example, the Galaxy S21 FE, which is superior to the A54 5G in virtually every way and can be purchased at some excellent discounts, especially if you head on over to Amazon or other retailers instead of shopping at Samsung.com.

And when you ask for the kind of money that Samsung is asking for a device like the Galaxy A54 5G, you need to bring something special to the table. Is that the case here, or has Samsung overplayed its hand and priced the phone too high?

Let’s find out in this Galaxy A54 5G review.

Design

You get the first noticeable sign that Samsung has made some upgrades to make the higher price palatable right after you hold the phone in your hand for the first time. The Galaxy A54 5G comes with Gorilla Glass 5 on both the front and back, and it feels just as premium as a Galaxy S22 or S23 as a result.

The jury’s still out on whether a glass back is an upgrade everyone wants, but many have been accusing Samsung in recent years of using plastic panels on mid-range Galaxy phones that cost more than competing Chinese phones, especially in markets like India. And given how much the Galaxy A54 5G costs in most markets, Samsung made the right call by finally addressing that accusation.

But while the rear side also looks quite similar to the flagship Galaxy S23 lineup, and the phone is IP67 certified for water and dust resistance, not everything has been upgraded. At the front, you have a 6.4-inch display with a centered circular cutout for the selfie camera, which is standard fare for such phones, but the big bezels around the display serve as a reminder that this is a mid-range device, and that may drive away some prospective customers.

Display and sound

The quality of the Galaxy A54 5G’s display is something no one will complain about. It’s a Super AMOLED panel so it’s got all the good qualities you expect, like vivid colors, deep blacks, and wide viewing angles, and Samsung has upgraded the brightness levels in bright lighting conditions by adding the Vision Booster feature that debuted on the Galaxy S22 series.

The Galaxy A53 5G’s screen could hit 800 nits of brightness, but with Vision Booster, the A54 5G can go up to 1000 nits. Not that the A53 5G’s screen had any legibility issues no matter how dark or bright the environment, but still, an upgrade to the display’s brightness levels is always welcome.

Oh, and as expected, this is a 120Hz display, like the A53’s, which makes for smooth animations and scrolling, at least when the Exynos 1380 chip powering the phone isn’t struggling to keep up (more details of that in the performance section below). Finally, the A54 5G is able to reduce blue light emission to as low as 6.5% – that is nearly a 2x improvement over the A53 5G, which could bring blue light levels down to 12.5%.

The display is complemented by an excellent stereo speaker setup just as good as you get on Samsung’s flagship phones, if not better (at least when you compare to the S22 series phones, which brought a downgrade in speaker quality over the S20, though the S23 series brought it back up to a high standard). As usual, there is one dedicated speaker that handles one stereo channel while the earpiece stands in for the other.

Nonetheless, you get great sound that tackles both low (bass) and high (treble) frequencies well while also getting considerably loud. Sadly, you either need a 3.5mm to USB-C converter for traditional headphones or headphones that use a USB-C connector by default to enjoy wired audio, because Samsung has once again decided to keep the 3.5mm port out of the spec sheet.

The A54 5G’s biometric features include an optical in-display fingerprint sensor in addition to facial recognition and the standard pin, password, and pattern options. And the fingerprint sensor works great, with high accuracy and a high recognition speed. Samsung has constantly improved the fingerprint reader on its mid-range phones over the years, and at this point it’s as good as it will ever get.

Camera

One of the best upgrades the Galaxy A54 5G brings over its predecessors is the main camera’s ability to use all pixels for focusing on the subject/scene, which results in quick autofocus in all lighting conditions, something we’re not used to seeing from cameras on Samsung’s mid-range phones.

The main camera also has optical image stabilization, which means blurry and shaky images and videos are not a big issue. And just like the Galaxy S23, the Galaxy A54 5G has a wider OIS angle so it can stabilize more of the scene or subject that you’re shooting, so the camera specs have certainly gotten some meaningful upgrades.

But in terms of image quality, there seems to be little difference between the A53 and the A54. The A54 takes slightly brighter and sharper nighttime pics when Night mode is used (even automatic photo mode will use a longer exposure if it’s dark enough, so you don’t have to manually switch to Night mode), but otherwise image quality has not changed all that much, especially during the daytime when both the old and new phone do great.

The 50MP main camera captures plenty of detail, both at the default 12MP pics it creates using pixel binning (combining multiple pixels into one larger pixel) and at the full 50MP resolution. Dynamic range is also strong most of the time, although I did notice some noise in the darker areas in some low-light pics, both with and without Night mode helping out.

As for portrait mode, edge detection is pretty solid and can give you some amazing results when you take bokeh pics, but as with most phones, how well the background will be blurred depends on the subject.

The 50MP main camera is accompanied by a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and it’s the same story here as it is with ultra-wide cameras on most Samsung phones that cost similar to or more than the A54 5G. While daylight pics show a nice amount of detail and better than average dynamic range, low-light and nighttime pictures are not always usable.

The phone also insists on not automatically enabling Night mode when you switch to the ultra-wide camera in low-light settings, unlike Samsung’s flagship phones which are good at deciding when Night mode is needed for photos captured using any of the rear cameras.

Below are some camera shots of scenes from both the main and ultra-wide camera, along with a couple of bokeh (Portrait) pictures at the end of the gallery.

The third rear camera is for taking macro photos, and, well, it’s not great. That’s a repeating theme across all Samsung phones that have a macro camera – their low megapixel count (5 megapixels on the A54 5G) results in not-very-sharp pictures, and it is also a huge task just realizing when your phone is close enough to the subject to get proper focus. In short, macro cameras on Samsung’s smartphones continue to be virtually useless for most scenarios, though you can get a good shot every now and then.

For selfies and video calls, the Galaxy A54 5G comes with a 32-megapixel front-facing camera, like the A53. Selfies are sharp enough outdoors during the day and manage to reproduce the correct skin tone in most instances. Indoors, with adequate lighting, the selfie camera still manages to hold its own, but don’t expect any miracles if you’re capturing selfies in areas such as pubs and cafes where lighting is often extremely dim.

Surprisingly, the Galaxy A54 5G supports the astro hyperlapse feature that debuted on the Galaxy S23 series. Astro hyperlapse videos are shot with a long exposure to capture the sky and the stars, but whether or not you get any nice astro hyperlapse videos is dependent on where you live. It’s more or less useless where I live thanks to the heavily polluted air, but I’m glad to see Samsung is at least not limiting the feature to its flagship devices.

In addition to astro hyperlapse videos, the A54 5G also has a full-featured Pro mode that lets you control shutter speed and various other parameters before taking a picture. Even Pro video mode is available on the A54 5G (it was also available on the A53). But features like astro photography are not supported because the A54 doesn’t support Samsung’s Expert RAW app, which is what is required by every Galaxy phone to take astro photos.

As for regular videos, the Galaxy A54 5G can shoot 4K videos at 30 fps or Full HD videos with 60 fps. Plenty of fine detail is preserved in videos shot in broad daylight, and even in well lit indoor settings. However, I found that even videos that I captured with both my hands holding the phone while spanning around at a very low speed were shaky, despite having OIS and digital stabilization working together.

Perhaps you need to use the Super Steady mode, which uses the ultra-wide camera for shooting videos and then crops the sides for smoother videos compared to the standard video mode, to take advantage of stabilization both optical and digital? I couldn’t test that theory, but I certainly hope it’s not the case because that would be tantamount to overselling features that are underwhelming in the real world and require a specific mode to work.

Software

The Galaxy A54 5G’s trump card, like most Samsung phones these days, is the software. The A54 5G has pretty much the same features as you get on a Galaxy S23, except for a couple of high-end features like Samsung DeX, and it comes preloaded with Android 13 and One UI 5.1.

And thanks to Samsung’s promise of four major OS upgrades and five years of security updates, the Galaxy A54 5G will be supported for a long time. It probably won’t get every new feature from new versions of Android and One UI in the latter half of that support period, but still, those who hang on to their phones for many years instead of upgrading every year or two will appreciate what Samsung is offering.

Performance and connectivity

After using the Galaxy A54, I seriously believe that the Samsung Exynos brand is not to be trusted, whether you talk about mid-range chips or flagship chips. The Exynos 1380, on paper, is an upgrade over the A53’s Exynos 1280, but for the asking price, it doesn’t seem to be enough of an upgrade. Or rather, Samsung’s optimization skills when it’s using chips made by its own semiconductor division continue to be inadequate.

The Galaxy A54 5G, like the Galaxy A53 5G, has some stutter and lag in general use, such as scrolling through the user interface or the animations when doing things like switching between apps. The Galaxy A53 5G’s performance issues were more or less fixed with software updates, and I’m sure the A54 5G will get better with updates, too. But the question here is why these issues even exist.

The Galaxy A52, powered by a Snapdragon chip, had no such issues out of the box. Neither does the Galaxy A34 5G, launched alongside the A54 5G and powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1080 chipset. When MediaTek’s chips start performing better than your chip on a phone you developed, it might be time to make some big changes, including firing whoever is currently in charge of making Exynos chips work well with Galaxy smartphones year after year.

Samsung is already exploring dropping Exynos chips, at least for the near future, from its flagships, but I think Samsung needs to stop using Exynos permanently, no matter how much ridicule it might get initially when/if it does that. The company can’t expect customers to accept the flaws of its Exynos-powered phones forever; brand value can only go so far before people realize their shiny new Galaxy phone is not performing as well as it should even though the prices keep on skyrocketing.

Thankfully, the Exynos 1380 does a good job when it comes to gaming. Graphically intensive titles like Call of Duty perform well, although performance can take a dip after extended periods of gaming. The phone also gets a little hot at the back, especially in the area around the cameras, but it never heated up to uncomfortable levels during my time with it.

The Exynos 1380 also impresses with its connectivity features. There’s 5G support, as you would expect from any modern mobile chip, but it also has features like Wi-Fi 6, which have remained mostly exclusive to Samsung’s flagships since their introduction.

Battery life and charging

Battery life on the Galaxy A54 5G is underwhelming, too, just like its performance. Samsung is marketing it as a phone that can go 2+ days on a single charge, but that’s not been true for me. Like virtually any other mid-range device from the company, you can go an entire day without needing to charge the A54 5G even when you use it for tasks that are considered battery drainers, like browsing, taking pictures, and gaming, which is great.

But two days? Nope, probably not, unless you use your phone lightly. And while some might make the argument that the phone’s battery life will get better over time, I don’t think that argument has much merit. Yes, it does make some difference as a phone learns your usage patterns to decide how to keep things running efficiently, but modern devices give you a hint of how long they can go on a single charge in the very first days. And the Galaxy A54 5G simply didn’t live up to Samsung’s claims during my time with the device as a daily driver.

25W fast charging on the A54 was also somewhat slow. With the battery down to 5%, half an hour of charging took it back up to around 39%, and after 60 minutes it resulted in ~75% charge, which isn’t impressive in this day and age. The phone takes almost an hour and 20 minutes to fully charge, which, again, is not an impressive figure and kind of underwhelming for how much you have to pay for the A54 5G.

Verdict

Samsung has made plenty of upgrades to justify the Galaxy A54 5G’s increased price, like the glass back, the flagship-level autofocus on the rear camera, the brighter display, and, at least on paper, the more powerful Exynos chip.

But Samsung’s failure to optimize the software to take advantage of the new chip, and its failure in fixing the intermittent stutter and lag in the phone’s performance that plagued last year’s Galaxy A53 5G, makes it incredibly hard to suggest the Galaxy A54 5G right now.

I’m sure a few software updates will iron out the performance kinks (and perhaps improve battery life, which is not as great as Samsung claims it is) like they did on the A53, and the price will drop a bit too and retailers will offer some discounts to further sweeten the deal.

For now, though, you might want to skip the A54 5G. If you buy it regardless of the issues, your user experience will be mostly good, but you won’t be getting enough value for money. Not to mention that we can’t ignore how the Galaxy A54 5G is priced a little too close to devices like Samsung’s own Galaxy S21 FE.

In fact, retailers like Amazon offer discounts that bring the S21 FE’s price below what Samsung is charging for the A54 5G in many markets, such as India. And the S21 FE is virtually better in every way (as long as you’re okay with it being eligible for one less major OS upgrade because it launched a year earlier and its lack of expandable storage), and it simply makes more sense for anyone looking to buy a new phone right away.

The Galaxy S23 series is making waves everywhere, partly because how all three phones perform so well and last so long on a single charge, thanks to the work Qualcomm and Samsung did together to make the latter’s newest flagships the best they can be. Two of the three Galaxy S23 models give you two-day battery life, and performance on all three phones is amazing, with incredibly smooth animations and the power to run all the latest apps and games without heating up too much.

The Galaxy S23 series, as is the norm, will be the first to get the next major version of Android, which is Android 14 in this case. One UI version 6.0 is expected to accompany the base Android 14 update, and many Galaxy S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra owners no doubt have a wishlist of features they would like to see on their device with One UI 6.0.

We here at SamMobile have such wishlists in mind, too. Me? Well, all I want from One UI 6.0 (and Android 14) right now is that it doesn’t mess with the amazing user experience we get on all three Galaxy S23 smartphones.

Galaxy S23 user experience is too good to be true, and I hope it stays that way

Samsung has done a great job of making major OS upgrades as bug-free as possible these last couple of years. One UI 5.0 for the Galaxy S22 lineup and other Galaxy devices was perhaps the closest we have ever come to a big update from Samsung that keeps things running smoothly from day one, and I have no doubt Samsung will work hard on ensuring the same is the case for the Android 14-based One UI 6.0 update for the S23 series.

And frankly, that’s all I want from Android 14 or One UI 6.0, that Samsung release the best possible version of the update from the get-go and not ruin the excellent experience Galaxy S23 owners have been having. Battery life and performance are two aspects in particular that I hope will continue to be as good as they are now, because, as we keep pointing out, those are among the best features of the Galaxy S23 lineup.

That might be easier said than done, though. Samsung partnered with Qualcomm for a special Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip for Galaxy smartphones and Google helped on the software side, but will either company extend that special courtesy to Samsung every time there’s a major OS upgrade coming?

Qualcomm, as the maker of the most used chipset in the Android world, contributes plenty to the operating system in general, but my concern with the Galaxy S23 series is that Samsung might mess things up if it is left to its own devices (no pun intended).

However, since Android 14 and One UI 6.0 are still months away from hitting the Galaxy S23 series, there’s no way of knowing what will happen. I’m using the Galaxy S23 Ultra at the moment and it’s a wonderful phone, and I’m going to focus on appreciating what it is now and not what it will be once Android 14 and One UI 6.0 come along.

Concerning the titular question, the answer is: One. Samsung already explained how its moon shots captured by the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s telephoto camera work, but one engineer took it upon himself to explain things in even greater detail. The short story is that the company doesn’t just overlay existing moon photos on top of yours or generate data out of thin air. It’s much more complex and clever than that, and if you’re still wondering how the company’s camera works, keep on reading and check out the full video below.

Without getting too technical, the simplest explanation (courtesy of Techisode TV) of how Samsung’s moon photos work is that Super Resolution technology synthesizes more than ten images of the moon you capture and combines image data from all those photos to create the highest-possible version, reducing noise and improving sharpness and detail. These combined results are then enhanced even further as they pass through an AI that Samsung trained to recognize the moon in every phase.

But this explanation doesn’t seem to account for the now-famous (or infamous) blurred photo of the moon someone on Reddit used to “prove” that the Galaxy S23 Ultra moon photos are fake. Or does it?

What about those moon photos blurred and tampered with deliberately?

In the video we recommend watching below, Techisode TV explains how, because the person on Reddit blurred the moon using gaussian blur, it allowed Samsung’s AI to run the numbers backward and get a much clearer image with seemingly no image data. In essence, Samsung’s convolution neural network improves an image’s sharpness and detail by doing the exact opposite math gaussian blur does.

As for other moon photos that some users modified on purpose to include foreign objects and throw off Samsung’s Moon Photography, these results also have an explanation, and again, it all has to do with the way Samsung applies its convolution neural network and approximates numbers. Lastly, the best proof that Samsung isn’t just faking moon photos is that the same technology the Galaxy S23 Ultra uses to enhance moon shots is also applied to enhance every other photo captured at a high-enough zoom level — moon shot or not. Therefore, this is much more than just an AI trained to enhance moon photos using existing textures and data from memory. It’s more like complex math that tries to “guess” reality from the little information you give it.

Rest assured. Samsung’s camera AI doesn’t plaster pre-made images onto your telephoto pictures to make them more realistic. Instead, it uses AI-driven complex math to calculate the best it can how reality should look like given the information it receives through the camera sensor and lenses. It does this with every photo captured at high levels of zoom — not just the moon — and does it extremely well.

Samsung has announced the launch of a new permanent Fortnite map. It’s inspired by the Samsung Odyssey monitor lineup and divided into five spaces, each representing one Odyssey model.

Odyssey Universe is the name of the map. The five spaces, or levels, are Level Ark, G9, G8, G7, and G6, inspired by Odyssey monitors bearing the same name.

To celebrate the launch of the new Fortnite map, Samsung partnered with streamers SypherPK and NickEh30 for a live stream on the official Samsung Odyssey Twitch channel. The live stream will commence on March 23 at 2 PM ET.

Fortnite players can accept missions available in each Odyssey-inspired space and earn various rewards. And once the live stream ends, players have until March 29 to participate in a Scavenger Hunt event to explore the map and find hidden answers.

These answers found on the Odyssey Universe map can be submitted to the Odyssey Universe event website, where players will be entered into a sweepstake. Keeping with the theme, winners get Odyssey gaming monitors. Samsung will announce the winners during another live stream on the official Odyssey Twitch channel on March 30 at 7 PM ET.

And to sweeten the launch of this new permanent map in Fortnite even more, Samsung is cutting 15% off select Odyssey gaming monitors at its online store between March 23-30.

The home key on the Galaxy Watch series running Wear OS has two functions. One is for “double-pressing” the key, and the other is for “pressing and holding.” Each can be reassigned individually. In addition, the back key’s “short press” command can also be reassigned.

To reassign buttons on your Samsung Galaxy Watch, first swipe down on the screen and open Settings. Then go to “Advanced features,” scroll down, and tap “Customize keys.”

From this menu, Samsung lets you reassign the three available commands: “Double press” and “Press and hold” for the home key, and “Short press” for the back key.

The “Double press home key” command can be assigned to “Go to most recent app,” “Accessibility shortcuts,” or to launch any other app installed on your smartwatch.

The “Press and hold home key” command can be assigned to Bixby, Google Assistant, or the Power off menu.

And lastly, the “Short press back key” command can be assigned to “Go to previous screen” or “Show recent apps.”
