In Vivo Bonsai

Hello bonsai artists and fans!

Ry2Tree2 Bonsai Blog started as a place for me to record what I learned from my apprenticeship under Dan Robinson at the famous Elandan Gardens. My bonsai master - "Bonsai Man Dan" (as I call him to my friends) - gained fame and notoriety over his 60+ year bonsai, however I found many of the newest generation of bonsai artists - my generation - have not heard of him. Dan rose to bonsai prominence among the first generation of yamadori or "mountain-tree" collectors in the US; he has explored natural landscapes spanning from Hawaii to Maine and from Alaska to Florida in search of wild bonsai. These roots led him to discover the beauty of ancient trees struggling for life and inspired his naturalistic style. Over his bonsai career, Dan went on to found and become president of the Puget Sound Bonsai Association, lecture and demonstrate on bonsai around the country, write multiple articles for international bonsai magazines on his "root-enhancement" collection techniques, donate the first US-native tree to the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum in Washington, DC, and publish much of his life work in bonsai through the writing and photography of Will Hiltz. More recently, Dan has spent the last 20 years building his own public bonsai garden atop a WWII landfill in Bremerton, WA. Dan is now more than content to tinker with trees in his bonsai oasis without care for promoting himself on the internet, however as his student I saw that I had to uplift his unique style and vast knowledge for others to learn from - hence this blog was born.

It's now been 5 yearsince starting my apprenticeship and my blog has evolved to include articles, youtube videos, and podcasts to share all of my work with the Pacific Bonsai Museum, Puget Sound Bonsai Association, Columbus Bonsai Society, and of course my personal bonsai collection as well. Follow if you'd like to explore the science and art of bonsai with me as I pass down old teachings from my bonsai teacher and apply them to my own bonsai collection now that I am "out of the nest" so to speak after a cross-country move. I look forward to the challenge of learning about new native trees and finding new teaching opportunities at my new home base of Columbus, Ohio.

Happy growing!
