The Harbourfront Centre’s Island Soul Festival served as the official public launch of Reggae Month Canada, a new national cultural initiative celebrating the enduring legacy and global influence of reggae music and culture in Canada.

The launch, took place during Harbourfront Centre’s annual celebration of Caribbean arts, culture and community over the August long weekend, marks the beginning of an initiative inspired by Jamaica’s internationally recognized Reggae Month celebrations. Organizers say the 2026 event represents a soft launch, with expanded national programming planned for 2027.

The initiative was founded by Farex Entertainment Inc., SPEXDABOSS, Fidelis Business Management and MVB Consulting, in collaboration with community, government, tourism and industry partners.

The launch comes as the City of Toronto recognizes the cultural significance of reggae with an official proclamation. Mayor Olivia Chow, on behalf of Toronto City Council, has proclaimed August 2026 as “Reggae Month” in the City of Toronto, acknowledging reggae’s influence on Toronto’s arts and cultural landscape and the contributions of the city’s Jamaican, Caribbean and Black communities.

The initiative has also received the approval and support of Jamaica’s Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia “Babsy” Grange.

Grange described Reggae Month Canada as “an important platform for showcasing Jamaican excellence while reinforcing the enduring legacy of reggae as a UNESCO-recognized cultural expression that transcends borders and generations.”

Reggae Month Canada is intended to strengthen the longstanding cultural and creative relationship between Canada and Jamaica while recognizing Canada’s own reggae history. Organizers aim to honour the artists, musicians, DJs, broadcasters, educators, promoters and community leaders who have helped establish and grow reggae across Canada over generations.

Why Canada, and why August?

Canada is home to vibrant Jamaican, Caribbean and Black communities whose artists and cultural leaders have played a significant role in shaping reggae’s presence in the country. Toronto has developed into an important international centre for reggae music and Caribbean culture.

The choice of August also carries significance. While Jamaica celebrates Reggae Month each February, Toronto’s proclamation of August 2026 as Reggae Month provides a Canadian platform for recognizing the music and its cultural contributions during the summer festival season.

For organizers, reggae represents much more than a musical genre. Its enduring messages of justice, unity, love, resistance and hope have helped make it a global cultural force. Reggae was inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in recognition of its contribution to international cultural expression.

A National Celebration Begins in 2027

Beginning in 2027, Reggae Month Canada is expected to develop into a multi-week cultural celebration featuring live concerts and performances, artist showcases, educational programs, workshops, panel discussions, film screenings, cultural exhibitions, networking events, youth mentorship initiatives and community celebrations across the Greater Toronto Area and beyond.

Education will be a central component of the initiative, with programming exploring reggae’s origins, its influence on social justice movements, its international cultural impact and its recognition by UNESCO.

A planned Reggae Industry Conference will bring together artists, managers, producers, promoters, broadcasters, record labels, festival organizers, tourism representatives, government agencies and educators. Discussions are expected to examine artist development, media, publishing, streaming, branding, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship and international touring.

The organizers also envision opportunities for business development, cultural tourism and international collaboration, positioning Canada as an increasingly important destination for reggae programming while strengthening cultural connections between Canada and Jamaica.

Reggae Month Canada is being positioned not simply as an annual music celebration, but as a long-term cultural initiative intended to honour reggae’s history, celebrate its contemporary influence and invest in its future.

The founding partners bring experience across entertainment, broadcasting, business management and strategic consulting. Farex Entertainment Inc. is co-initiating and driving the initiative’s production and programming. SPEXDABOSS, co-founder and host of The Riddim Track, brings 25 years of experience with Canada’s only commercial reggae radio show. Fidelis Business Management is supporting operations and growth, while MVB Consulting serves as a strategic consulting partner.

With Toronto’s official proclamation, support from Jamaica’s Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, and the public launch at Harbourfront Centre’s Island Soul Festival, Reggae Month Canada enters its inaugural year with a clear objective: to create a lasting national platform for reggae, recognize the people who have carried its legacy forward and build new cultural and creative bridges between Canada, Jamaica and the wider world.
