Planning for retirement involves more than deciding when to stop working. Healthcare expenses, Social Security benefits, financial security, and family responsibilities all influence life after retirement. Finding reliable guidance and practical support is equally important.

AARP addresses these needs through its membership programme, educational resources, and advocacy for older Americans. Formerly known as the American Association of Retired Persons, AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organisation primarily focused on people aged 50 and older.

Its official website offers retirement planning tools, Medicare guidance, caregiving support, and consumer protection resources. Members can also access discounts on travel, dining, shopping, and entertainment, alongside employment resources. Understanding these offerings helps individuals assess the practical value of AARP membership.

What Is AARP and What Does It Offer?

Founded in 1958 by educator Ethel Percy Andrus, AARP is a US-based nonprofit organisation headquartered in Washington, DC. It was originally established as the American Association of Retired Persons but adopted the shorter name AARP in 1999 to reflect its broader focus on people approaching retirement, working beyond traditional retirement age, or managing other responsibilities later in life.

Its mission is to empower people to choose how they live as they age. The organisation works through three main areas:

Advocacy: Representing older Americans on issues involving Social Security, Medicare, prescription drug costs, financial security and age discrimination.
Education: Publishing information, tools and guides covering health, money management, employment and caregiving.
Membership services: Providing discounts, publications, rewards and access to selected products and services.

AARP also operates nationwide, with offices across all US states, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.

An important distinction is that AARP is neither a government agency nor an insurance company. It advocates for policies affecting older adults and provides access to certain insurance products through third-party providers.

AARP Membership: Eligibility, Cost and Included Benefits

AARP membership is designed primarily for adults aged 50 and older, but joining is not restricted to this age group. Anyone aged 18 or above can become a member. This makes the organisation accessible to younger adults who want to explore its discounts, financial resources, or caregiving information before reaching retirement age.

Financial Security, Social Security and Retirement Planning

Retirement planning is one of the most important areas covered by AARP. The organisation provides educational resources to help individuals understand their income options, prepare for changing expenses and make informed financial decisions.

Social Security Guidance

The Social Security Resource Center explains how the federal programme works and what individuals should consider before claiming retirement benefits. Important topics include:

Eligibility requirements and benefit calculations.
Full retirement age and early retirement.
Delayed retirement credits.
Spousal and survivor benefits.
Working while receiving Social Security.
Understanding Social Security statements.

AARP also provides Social Security calculators that allow users to compare estimated benefits at different claiming ages. For example, someone considering retirement at 62 can compare that option with waiting until full retirement age or later. This can help illustrate how the timing of a claim affects monthly payments.

These calculators provide estimates rather than official benefit determinations. Individuals should verify their figures through the Social Security Administration before making retirement decisions.

Retirement Savings and Financial Planning

Beyond Social Security, AARP covers budgeting, savings, debt management, and retirement income planning. Its financial resources help users consider questions such as:

How much income might be needed after retirement?
How should existing savings be managed?
What expenses could increase during retirement?
How can people prepare for unexpected healthcare costs?
What financial steps can support long-term independence?

These resources are particularly useful for individuals who are still working and want to evaluate their financial position before leaving employment.

Healthcare, Medicare and Family Caregiving Resources

Healthcare decisions can become more complicated as people approach retirement. Medicare eligibility, insurance coverage, and long-term care arrangements require an understanding of different programmes and expenses. AARP provides educational material to help individuals navigate these subjects.

Understanding Medicare

Medicare is a federal health insurance programme primarily serving people aged 65 and older, along with certain younger individuals who qualify through disability or specific medical conditions. AARP explains the four main parts:

Medicare part	What it covers
Part A	Eligible inpatient hospital care and certain related services
Part B	Outpatient medical services, physician visits and preventive care
Part C	Medicare Advantage plans offered by approved private insurers
Part D	Prescription drug coverage through participating private insurers

The organisation also provides access to Medicare-related guidance and comparison resources. However, AARP does not administer Medicare. Some insurance products carrying the AARP name, including Medicare Supplement Insurance, are provided through UnitedHealthcare.

What should shoppers compare? Monthly premiums, deductibles, prescription coverage, provider networks, and out-of-pocket expenses. A plan with a lower premium may not necessarily be the most affordable option over an entire year.

Support for Family Caregivers

Caregiving can involve managing medical appointments, coordinating household responsibilities, and helping relatives with everyday activities. These responsibilities can also affect employment and personal finances.

AARP’s Family Caregiving Resource Center provides guides and information to help people manage these challenges. Its resources cover:

Creating a caregiving plan.
Understanding legal and financial arrangements.
Managing care-related expenses.
Finding suitable support services.
Balancing employment with caregiving responsibilities.
Exploring long-term care and housing arrangements.

These resources are relevant to people caring for ageing parents, spouses and other family members.

Everyday Savings: Travel, Shopping, Dining and Entertainment

Alongside its educational and advocacy work, AARP provides access to a large network of member discounts. These offers are delivered through participating businesses and third-party providers.

Travel and Hotel Discounts

Members can explore savings on hotel bookings, rental cars, cruises, and selected vacation packages. The AARP Travel Center, powered by Expedia, allows users to compare eligible travel offers and accommodation options.

For frequent travellers, these disc...
