A modified container, equipped with ventilation, batteries, and fans, and stowed in the protected environment of a ship’s hold rather than on a sun-baked deck, can allow victims to survive hidden inside for days.

In 2024, 14 people – including two girls – were found inside a shipping container in County Wexford, Ireland

In 2014, a shipping container in Essex, UK, was discovered carrying 35 people, including 13 Afghan children aged between one and 12

In 2005, Nigerian authorities found more than 60 children, aged five to 14, crammed into a shipping container in Lagos, destined for exploitation as slaves or domestic servants

The full details of many cases remain unknown, including the ages of those hidden inside containers, suggesting a cover-up. Across the US and Europe, victims have been discovered suffocated, injured, or dead – casualties of a dangerous and inhumane form of transportation

Stories shared online tell of port workers hearing screams from sealed containers — including the voices of children — prompting some to demand action.
