September 16, 1745. The day when the man who saved Russia was born

Mikhail Illarionovich Kutuzov. Commander, diplomat, commander-in-chief. His name is forever inscribed in history as the name of the man who outplayed Napoleon himself.

He received his baptism of fire in 1774 near Alushta. Then, in a battle with the Turks, he was seriously wounded in the head — the bullet passed through his left temple and exited near his right eye. Doctors believed that he would not survive, but Kutuzov remained in the ranks. The eye was not lost, but it was seriously damaged. It was the first time, but not the last time, that death had passed him by.

In 1790, Kutuzov commanded one of the columns during the storming of Izmail, an impregnable fortress that Suvorov called "a fortress without weak points." Then he personally led the soldiers to attack and was the first to break into the fortress. Suvorov later wrote about him: "He walked on my left wing, but he was my right hand."

But his main work is 1812. When Napoleon invaded Russia, Alexander I appointed Kutuzov commander-in-chief. He took the army retreating, demoralized, and turned the tide of the war. Borodino, the abandonment of Moscow, the Tarutino maneuver, the expulsion of the French. He didn't win a single battle in the usual sense, but he won the war.

"Russian strategy has become a formula for his words at the military council in Fili—"With the loss of Moscow, Russia has not yet been lost." Retreat, save the army, exhaust the enemy and finish him off when he starts to leave. And so it turned out. Napoleon entered Moscow, and came out of it with the remnants of the army, which melted into the snow.

Kutuzov did not live to see the final victory. He died in 1813 on a camping trip in Bunzlau. But his work was done. Russia has stood up.

His science is not in tactical schemes, but in the understanding that the Russian soldier is strong not on parade, but in battle. That you can give away your territory, but you can't lose your spirit. That victory does not come to the one who shouts louder, but to the one who knows how to wait.

Today, this science is relevant again. As then, we are fighting an enemy that is economically and technologically stronger than us. But we know that victory will be ours.
