For Jerry Hingtgen, Operation BBQ Relief (OBR) isn’t just an organization that serves meals—it’s a movement that serves hope. As OBR’s Region 6 Director, Jerry embodies the passion and purpose that fuels OBR’s mission to provide “ The One Hot Meal That Matters” in times of crisis.

Jerry first encountered OBR in a way many volunteers do: through an inspiring conversation.

“I met an OBR volunteer, Steve Primrose, at a work event in Washington, D.C.,” Jerry recalled. “He shared stories about serving meals to families who had lost everything, and I could see the pride and compassion in his voice. That moment stuck with me.”

Hearing how the simple, comforting act of serving barbecue could bring connection and relief in a moment of great loss lit an immediate spark. Jerry knew he wanted to be part of an organization driven by that kind of powerful purpose.

“I love what food does—it brings people together,” he explained. “OBR’s mission spoke directly to my heart. It’s not just about filling a plate; it’s about lifting spirits, reminding people that someone cares, and bringing a sense of normalcy when the world feels upside down.”

This powerful understanding of food as a vehicle for empathy and care is what drove Jerry to take the leap from admirer to active volunteer.

Jerry’s journey with OBR started virtually, joining the Virtual Volunteer Team during the Perrytown, Texas disaster in June 2023.

“Even from behind a screen, I could feel the energy and heart of OBR’s mission,” he said.

However, his first on-site deployment in response to Hurricane Idalia in Florida in August and September 2023 was truly transformative.

“Standing shoulder to shoulder with people who simply wanted to help—serving meals, seeing the gratitude in someone’s eyes—it reminded me why I was there. After that, I knew I wasn’t just volunteering; I was part of a family.”

That sense of shared mission and deep connection sealed his commitment to the organization. For anyone contemplating volunteering or those who have just started, Jerry’s advice is straightforward and inspiring: “Don’t overthink it—just jump in.”

He emphasized the value of every role on the team.

“Whether you’re cooking, packing meals, serving guests, or washing dishes, every task makes a difference,” he said. “You’ll find that what you give comes back in ways you never expect—through friendships, laughter, and a renewed sense of purpose. It’s hard work, but it’s the kind of work that fills your soul.”

When asked about his favorite OBR memory, Jerry noted that his favorite moments always center on the people.

“Watching strangers come together—volunteers from all walks of life—working side by side with one goal: to help others. There’s something powerful about that,” he shared. “The teamwork, the laughter, the quiet moments when you realize you’ve made someone’s day just a little brighter… those are the memories that stay with you.”
