About the Film: Against the backdrop of the civil war in the Central African Republic, a Chinese construction manager and local African laborer work on opposite ends of the spectrum to construct a sparkling new bank. As deadlines loom, unexpected twists threaten their jobs, relationships, and plans for a better life.

The film has been selected for recognition in Visions du Réel, a prestigious documentary film festival held in Nyon, Switzerland.

NewsDoc Alum Mathieu Faure is the executive producer, producer, co-writer and co-editor of this feature documentary.

About Mathieu Faure:

Mathieu Faure won the 2018 Student Academy Awards in the Domestic Documentary category for his personal film called An Edited Life. In 2018, he graduated from the News and Documentary Masters program at the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. Since then, Mathieu worked for the CNN Documentary unit, before joining Don Lemon’s team on his show CNN Tonight. After that, Mathieu was a field producer on a series of documentaries for CNN + and Fareed Zakaria. Mathieu is currently a field producer at Apple.

Hearst Explanatory Reporting Winner Announced

NYU senior Rachel Cohen took Tenth Place in the Explanatory Reporting Competition of the 2022-2023 Hearst Journalism Awards Program. Her winning story, “How the Navajo Nation Beat Back Covid,” was published in The Nation. She is NYU’s third winner in the nationwide undergraduate writing competition for the academic year, which puts NYU in sixth place.

As part of her work as the innovation editor for Sahan Journal, Studio 20 alumna Aala Abdullahi launched a new Somali newsletter for the community in Minnesota in October 2022. She also leads the newsroom’s experimentation efforts around new news products that serve the needs of immigrants, refugees and communities of color in the U.S. Her community engagement project called “Citizen Lab” was one of 25 community and audience engagement projects funded by the Google News Initiative and won the LION community engagement award in 2021.

Last year, NYU’s American Journalism Online Master’s Program launched the AJO Awards to honor excellence in reporting with an emphasis on recognizing the new ways that journalists connect with the public. We made it free and easy to submit nominations, so as to capture work by people and organizations that don’t have the resources to fund submissions to more established journalism awards. And this year we’re back to celebrate more exciting journalism – we’ve even added a new category for media criticism judged by Brian Stelter.

Today we announce the winners of the 2022 Awards! From a detailed quiz helping New Yorker’s match themselves to a mayoral candidate, to a Twitter thread about missing and murdered indigenous people in Wyoming, to a series investigating gangs in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, we are proud to be bringing work that exists outside the mainstream into the spotlight.

We recruited some of the best journalists working today as judges – including Pulitzer finalist Jason Leopold and Julia B. Chan, the EIC of The 19th – as well as prominent members of NYU’s faculty: Asst. Prof. Ellen Horne co- judged our podcasting category; Asst. Prof. Dr. Chenjerai Kumanyika judged our Feature Most Likely to Inspire Fellow Journalists category; and Vice Provost and Asst. Prof. Clay Shirky judged the Best Non-Traditional News Source category.

“With the AJO Awards we want to draw attention to some of the great work being done by journalists and publications that live outside the mainstream,” says AJO founder and director, Prof. Adam Penenberg.

“We aim to honor impactful reporting and vivid storytelling as well as celebrate the many ways today’s journalists inject humor, voice and ingenuity into their work.”

Shuhao Tse, a NewsDoc alum, won the 2022 Student Academy Award for his documentary “Found.” His thesis film tells the story of Tang, whose son was stolen when the child was three. Twelve years later, the Chinese police found his son, but any joy was trapped by a new reality. “Found” also won The Special Jury Prize and the 2022 Yugo BAFTA Student Awards. He is the eighth NewsDoc student to win a Student Academy Award. The ceremony will take place on October 20.
