Hi everyone,

Since buying my ROG Strix G713PV, I have been dealing with random system freezes, Black Screens of Death, and hard crashes during Modern Standby (S0 Low Power Idle)—especially when the laptop goes idle after a boot with Fast Startup enabled or after waking up from Hibernation.

No driver version (whether official ASUS drivers or generic vendor drivers) has ever fixed this issue.

🔍 Technical Root Cause: An ASUS BIOS / ACPI Defect

After extensive troubleshooting, the root cause seems identified: a broken ACPI implementation in the ASUS BIOS itself.

High-Definition Audio drivers (NVIDIA, AMD, Realtek) create standard PowerSettings subkeys in the Windows Registry to manage hardware power states.
This is completely standard behavior for these drivers, and it works flawlessly on other manufacturer platforms.
However, the ASUS BIOS fails to handle deep-sleep power states properly when these standard PowerSettings subkeys exist, triggering severe ACPI crashes in Modern Standby.

Pointing fingers at third-party software or drivers is not the solution. ASUS needs here to fix the BIOS. A defect in the BIOS still present 3 years after product launch is not acceptable for a flagship laptop.

⚠️ A Workaround, Not a Permanent Fix

As proof, deleting all these (3) Audio drivers PowerSettings registry subkeys manually temporarily stops the crashes. As per Microsoft documentation, standard Windows policy is used instead for Power Idling. However, Windows updates, driver installations or startup periodically restore them, causing the crashes to return.

The true solution would be clearly a BIOS update. However, in the meantime, to completely circumvent this issue, I developed a workaroud Python script (fix_media_powersettings), as an automated background utility that cleans these keys automatically whenever they reappear.

This workaround has proven 100% effective, further confirming that the drivers are not at fault—the ASUS BIOS is.

🛠️ How the Workaround Tool Works

Rather than requiring manual script execution, this tool operates 100% autonomously:

Scans & Cleans: Automatically removes BIOS-incompatible PowerSettings keys across all targeted audio drivers (NVIDIA, AMD, Realtek).
Event-Driven Task Scheduler: Registers a background task running under SYSTEM that triggers on:
- System Boot
- Driver Installation / INF Binding (Kernel-PnP Event 410)
- System Wake (Power-Troubleshooter Event 1)
Lightweight & Fast: Runs in a few milliseconds with zero background RAM/CPU usage.
