Hey all — If there's something I'm missing or some information that would be helpful, please let me know. I haven't posted on this forum in the past. I’m running into a really strange USB issue on an AM5 build and I’m trying to figure out if this is firmware-related or a bad board and if it's worth warrantying the board or just dealing with the issues.

System specs:

Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX X870-A GAMING WIFI
BIOS: 2306 (AGESA ComboAM5 PI 1.3.0.1b)
CPU: Ryzen 5 7600X
RAM: G.SKILL Trident Z5 Neo DDR5 (tested with EXPO on and off)
GPU: ASUS ROG Strix RTX 3060 Ti
Storage: Samsung 990 PRO 2TB NVMe
PSU: Seasonic Vertex PX 1000W (brand new, replaced previous PSU)
Cooling: Corsair Nautilus 360 RS LCD

Issue:

After a cold boot, everything works perfectly.

But after Windows runs for a while, the system stops detecting any new USB devices:

Plug in a flash drive → nothing
No Windows chime
No device manager change
No USB enumeration at all

However:

Devices that were already plugged in (mouse, keyboard, etc.) continue working normally
USB ports still provide power (I can charge a phone)
This happens across all ports (rear IO, front panel, USB-C, USB 2.0, everything)

Additional behavior (important):

Restarting Windows hangs for a long time and eventually recovers into what looks like a forced cold boot
USB works again after a cold boot, but eventually fails again after uptime
BIOS USB functionality is completely normal
I captured a USB trace during the issue → no errors, it just stops seeing any connect events entirely

Troubleshooting done so far:

✅ Replaced PSU (no change)
✅ Disabled all USB power saving (power plan + device manager)
✅ Reset BIOS to optimized defaults
✅ Global C-States: Set to Disabled. This was intended to prevent the CPU from entering deep power-saving modes, which can cause power delivery drops or latency spikes in the USB controllers (though, as you noted, these have been off for months now).
✅ CPU SOC Voltage (VSOC): Manually locked at 1.2V. Overriding the default auto-voltage ensures a stable, consistent power delivery to the integrated I/O hub and memory controller, preventing aggressive voltage drops from dropping USB connections.
✅ PCIe Link Speed: Changing the PCIe slot configuration from Auto / Gen 5 down to Gen 4 or Gen 3. This helps rule out high-frequency bus interference leaking into the motherboard's chipset or USB controller fabric.
✅ USB Selective Suspend: Disabled in the Windows Power Plan (and via registry overrides) to stop the OS from putting individual USB hubs to sleep.
✅ Monitor Firmware Update: Updating the display firmware to prevent handshake drops on any built-in monitor USB hubs.
✅ Updated BIOS to newest version.
✅ Reset BIOS to optimized defaults
✅ Tested RAM with EXPO on and off
✅ Tested multiple USB devices (thumb drives, etc.)
✅ Issue affects all USB controllers/ports
✅ Happens consistently after 15-20 minutes uptime

What it looks like:

At this point it feels like:

The USB controller is still active (existing endpoints still work)
But it stops handling hotplug / port change events entirely
Almost like the controller or chipset enters a bad state and never recovers without a full power cycle

Questions:

Has anyone seen this behavior specifically (not dropouts, but no new device detection) on AM5 / X870?
Could this be an AGESA / firmware issue causing the controller to stop processing interrupts?
Has anyone had similar restart hangs tied to USB/controller state?
Worth trying a PCIe USB controller card, or would that still rely on the same chipset path?

At this point I’m trying to figure out if I’m dealing with:

a firmware regression
or a defective motherboard/chipset

Any input would be hugely appreciated — I’m on the fence about sending the board in for warranty or just keeping it.
