OXFORD, PA — Four consecutive losses opened the season for the Oxford Golden Bears 13U. But by the time the team took the field for its regular-season finale, the Golden Bears had become a far different team—one capable of controlling a game, producing explosive plays and giving its hometown supporters a Saturday evening to remember.

The Golden Bears closed their regular season Saturday, October 17, with a convincing 35-12 victory over the Kennett-Unionville Titans at Oxford Stadium. Oxford scored 35 unanswered points before the Titans finally reached the end zone at the end of the third quarter, capping a late-season turnaround that showcased just how far the 13U team had progressed since its difficult opening weeks.

The victory brought Oxford’s record to 3-5. But while the Golden Bears had found their stride, the postseason remained just beyond their reach. Saturday’s game was the final contest of the season—and the final game in the Oxford Golden Bears youth football program for the team’s senior players.

For one Saturday night, however, the focus belonged to the football. And Oxford gave its home crowd plenty to celebrate.

An Early Lead Sets the Tone

Oxford wasted little time establishing control.

The Titans’ opening possession ended in a turnover on downs after they lost 11 yards over four plays. The Golden Bears took over at the Kennett-Unionville 29-yard line and needed only three plays to reach the end zone. Running back Connor Hankins finished the drive with a six-yard touchdown run to the right, giving Oxford an early 6-0 lead.

The defense struck again on the Titans’ next possession, recovering a fumble to give the Golden Bears another opportunity. Oxford needed just four plays to cover 50 yards, with running back Hudson Devine breaking loose for a 26-yard touchdown sweep to the left. The lead grew to 12-0.

The early sequence established the pattern that would define the game: Oxford’s defense created opportunities, and its offense converted them into points.

The Golden Bears continued to dictate the game in the second quarter. After forcing another turnover on downs, Oxford overcame an interception on its own possession and continued to apply pressure defensively. The Titans struggled to establish an offensive rhythm, including a possession that ended in a punt after losing 12 yards.

Oxford then put together a 55-yard scoring drive in six plays. Wide receiver Gabe Armideo, lined up in the Wildcat formation, finished the drive with a three-yard touchdown plunge up the middle, giving the Golden Bears a commanding 20-0 advantage.

A Defense That Refused to Yield

Although Oxford’s offense supplied the points, the defense delivered some of the game’s most consequential plays.

Late in the first half, Kennett-Unionville mounted its most promising drive of the opening two quarters. The Titans advanced 49 yards over 10 plays, setting up first and goal with a minute to play before halftime.

The Golden Bears answered with a goal-line stand, halting the drive on fourth down at the six-yard line as time expired and preventing Kennett-Unionville from carrying any momentum into the break.

Contributions Up and Down the Roster

Oxford’s defensive effort was notable not only for its results but also for how many players contributed. Twenty-one Golden Bears recorded at least one entry in the defensive-tackles column—the largest number the team had recorded in that category all season.

Middle linebacker Zaiden Palmer led the listed defenders with a solo tackle, four assists and 1.5 tackles for loss. Outside linebacker Gabe Armideo recorded two solo tackles, two assists and half a tackle for loss. Linebacker Gerard Guss notched a solo tackle and five assists, while cornerback Nate Fitzgerald added six assisted tackles.

Defensive tackle Xavier Rodriguez recorded an assist, a tackle for loss and a sack. Fellow defensive tackle Bradley Seeger added an assist, two tackles for loss, a shared sack, and the critical first-quarter fumble recovery that set up Oxford’s second touchdown.

The breadth of participation was a distinction in its own right: Oxford did not rely on a handful of superstars to make every stop but rather swarmed the ball as a complete unit.

The final statistics reflected the Golden Bears’ control. Kennett-Unionville ran 39 plays but managed just 127 total yards—96 of which came on two big plays. The Titans averaged 3.3 yards per play. Oxford generated 219 yards on only 27 plays, averaging 8.1 yards per play.

The difference was not simply the number of opportunities each team had. It was what Oxford did with them.

Explosive Plays Extend the Lead

Oxford wasted little time adding to its advantage in the third quarter.

On their opening drive of the third quarter, the Golden Bears covered 52 yards in five plays. Quarterback Emilio Lara and tight end Elijah Riehl delivered the drive’s biggest play, connecting on a 35-yard touchdown pass that Riehl caught over his shoulder in stride. The score pushed Oxford’s lead to 27-0.

The defensive pressure continued after halftime. Oxford forced another turnover on downs of the Titans’ opening possession, with the Titans losing 14 yards over four plays and giving the Golden Bears possession at the Titans’ 21-yard line.

Three plays later, Oxford was back in the end zone.

Fullback Zaiden Palmer powered through the middle for a one-yard touchdown, completing Oxford’s third-quarter scoring. Parker Kloss, a senior lineman, then added a successful two-point conversion on a bruising carry to establish the final 35-point total.

The Golden Bears scored in a variety of ways. Hankins and Devine found the end zone on runs to opposite sides, Armideo scored from the Wildcat formation, Lara and Riehl connected on the long touchdown pass, and Palmer powered through the middle for the final offensive touchdown.

Oxford finished with 166 rushing yards, compared with 109 for Kennett-Unionville. Lara led the ground attack with 81 yards on five carries, averaging 16.2 yards per carry. Devine added 46 yards on three carries, while Hankins gained 31 yards on three attempts. Palmer contributed 13 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Lara also completed three of six passes for 56 yards and a touchdown. Riehl caught two passes for 46 yards, averaging 23 yards per reception, while Armideo added a 10-yard reception.

It was a balanced offensive performance, with multiple players contributing to a scoring effort that left the Titans struggling to keep pace.

The Line That Made It Possible

Oxford’s running game was about more than individual ball carriers breaking into the open field. The Front Five of Xavier Rodriguez, Ryan Kelley, Parker Kloss, Bradley Seeger, and center Hector Bedolla helped create the space for those gains, producing the unit’s best run-direction net yardage performance of the season.

On designed runs, Oxford gained 114 yards on eight attempts to the right side, averaging 14.3 yards per carry. The Golden Bears added 28 yards on two designed runs to the left, averaging 14 yards per carry. Both figures eclipsed the team’s previous season highs, set in Week 5 against Clifton Heights.

The line allowed just one tackle for loss and two pass pressures, with no sacks recorded. Its 81 percent line-integrity rating—the unit’s second-best mark of the season, behind only its Week 4 performance against West Chester—reflected another strong outing.
