The season for Spring paving and other maintenance work has begun.

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation kicked off repair work along its 5,400 miles of roadway and 1,700 miles of sidewalks following this winter’s cold and storms. In total, MCDOT expects to complete more than 50 repair projects this spring.

A preliminary list of current or scheduled road resurfacing projects and sidewalk repair projects is available online for residents to review. Both sites will be updated throughout paving season, said transportation department officials.

“People depend on safe roads and sidewalks every day, and we have to stay on top of maintenance to keep them that way,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “If we fix problems early, we avoid bigger and more expensive repairs later. We’re also making sure sidewalks and curb ramps meet ADA standards so everyone can get around safely, including people with disabilities.”

Crews will inspect curb ramps and upgrade any that are not accessible and compliant with the Americans for Disabilities Act, according to a McDOT statement.

County transportation crews completed its inspection of the more than 1,100 miles of county-maintained primary roads in early March. A survey of the county’s 4,300 miles of residential roads was completed in 2025. Crews did additional road condition assessments and repairs during its February pothole blitz.

Trucks outfitted with cameras that assess street surfaces and report cracks, potholes or other road damage have been used to assess county road conditions, according to McDOT.

“MCDOT inspects all County roads every other year, and is continuously evaluating and repairing sidewalks, to ensure the integrity of our infrastructure,” said Chris Conklin, director of MCDOT. “The goal is to treat surface issues caused by regular wear and tear on roads and sidewalks before larger issues can develop.”

According to Conklin, every dollar spent on this maintenance saves between $6 and $10 in future repairs.

MCDOT has also begun resurfacing and patching pavements for several residential road projects that were previously identified as needing repair.
