At Mercy Housing California, we know that delivering high-quality, service-enriched affordable housing takes more than great buildings — it takes committed partners. We are proud to spotlight Suffolk, a general contractor on our recently opened 600 Seventh Street community in San Francisco, whose support for residents has continued well beyond construction.

Suffolk’s culture of community care has helped ensure that new residents feel welcomed, supported, and set up for success from day one.

When 221 households began moving into their new homes last year, Suffolk sponsored a Move-In‑ Kitchen Starter Kit for every apartment. Each kit — stocked with essentials like dish soap, detergent, paper towels, sponges, disinfecting wipes, and reusable grocery bags — helped residents settle in with dignity and ease. Suffolk’s team worked closely with our onsite managers to ensure every household received what they needed at the right time.

Their support continued after the community had settled in. Ahead of the new school year, Suffolk led a Back-to-School‑Backpack Drive, providing 150 backpacks filled with school supplies for children living at 600 Seventh. Suffolk coordinated with our resident services and philanthropy team to ensure every child walked into class feeling confident, prepared, and supported by their broader community.

Suffolk’s impact extended even further when a newly housed young mother, who had recently survived an unimaginable tragedy, moved into her one-bedroom‑ apartment with her baby. While she had secured safety and shelter, she had few belongings.

When our team reached out, Suffolk responded immediately through the Suffolk Giving Circle, an employee-driven nonprofit funded by voluntary monthly contributions from nearly 85% of Suffolk staff. The Giving Circle provides more than $1.5 million annually in financial assistance to members of what Suffolk calls the Greater Suffolk Family — including clients, community members, and partners facing unexpected hardship.

Through the Giving Circle, Suffolk funded essential furnishings for this young family, transforming an empty apartment into a true home. The response reflected Suffolk’s core belief: that building strong communities means showing up long after construction is complete.

We are deeply grateful for Suffolk’s partnership and their ongoing dedication to the residents of 600 Seventh Street. Their generosity, creativity, and sustained engagement demonstrate what’s possible when corporate partners commit to community well‑being.
