Meandering the Blue Highways

We love long road trips and take at least two a year in our camper van. We're on our fourth: a 1986 VW Westy, still Doug's daily driver; a Pleasure Way Excel, too big and we kept it only a year; a Pleasure Way Traverse Ford poptop, bought used and took us 60,000 miles in four years until it needed a new engine; and now a Promaster 1500 with 136" wheelbase. We've already put over 60,000 miles on it in 4.5 years, including the pandemic when we were mostly homebound. We've been around the US, especially love the Southwest and Pacific Northwest, and have made three trips to Alaska. We've been to much of Canada, and are drawn to the Yukon. We travel with just a vague itinerary, follow our noses, and avoid highways.

We'd spent a few days with Doug's son, Andrew, and girlfriend, Devon, in Quantico, Virginia. Andrew is stationed there with Marine Squadron HMX-1, which guards the presidential helicopters. On our last day with them, we said our goodbyes, then were off in the MRV to Washington, DC.

In early January, finding ourselves in a bit of a cabin fever mode, we took advantage of a sunny day to drive up to the nearby Sierra Nevada foothills. Who knew when the sun would disappear again.
With 275 days of sun a year, why were we worried about losing the sun? Well, because when the unusual warmth ended in mid-November, California ...

In November 2025,  atmospheric rivers hovered over the Golden State. Perhaps you heard about the inches of rain, floods, wind, mudslides, road closures, and communities cut off.      Then there were the 3 weeks of a nice tule fog blanket over the entire 430-mile-long C...

Note: In 2012, I had the opportunity to travel to Panamá with our good friend Sally. I loved every minute of our week there. I wrote a series of posts at the time; this one is an addition. Links to the others are below.
