Lutherans believe that we are saved by grace alone, apart from any works we may do. It’s one of the “Solas” of the Reformation. This song which was used in Sunday worship recently says it well. It was written in 1742 by a German theologian named Christian Ludwig Scheidt. He was also an organist. It reflects his understanding of “saved by grace” and is still popular today.
