Early voting turnout for the March 3 primary was likely the highest in Gregg County’s history.

“I think this is the highest we’ve seen,” said Jennifer Briggs, the county’s elections administrator.

Early voting ended Friday with 11,874 Gregg County voters having gone to the polls – roughly 16% of the county’s 74,011 registered voters. That’s a significantly higher turnout than in any primary election in recent history.

Here are the early voting turnout numbers from previous primary elections:

2024: 7,088

2022: 6,751

2020: 6,709

2018: 7,286 (includes mail-in ballots)

2016: 9,181

2014: 6,514

2012: 6,735

Numerous high-profile statewide offices are on the ballot this year, including the governor’s office and one of Texas’ U.S. Senate seats. Briggs previously said the House District 7 race could be driving high early voting turnout. In the Republican primary, Rep. Jay Dean, R-Longview, faces challenger Melissa Beckett.

Primary election participation has increased in recent years, Briggs said. This year’s early voting turnout increase is roughly 40% compared to previous years.

Election administrators around Texas are reporting record early voting turnouts, Briggs said.

“I guess people are just interested and ready to get out and vote,” she said.

Election procedures are going smoothly in Gregg County, and early voting “went off without a hitch,” Briggs said.

“I couldn’t ask for an easier election,” she said. “It’s gone very smoothly, even with the massive turnout.”

Today is Election Day, and voters can head to the polls from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
