Boro’ Women return to action looking to chalk some points on the board in what is sure to be a tough away day at Queens Park Rangers…

Background Check

QPR have existed since before the turn of the millennium. There was certainly a side named QPR Women back in May 2001 as they merged with another “long running and well established side” Mill Hill to become QPR Ladies. This side existed until 2018 when the side was renamed QPR Women. They finished 4th in the London and South East Regional Premier. Then came the restructure. The QPR Community Trust stepped in and brought the team under the umbrella of the club. This meant that there would be a new team - QPR Women and the original QPR side from back in 2001 would now be Hounslow. Hounslow were in Tier 3 - the Southern Premier Division, while QPR remained in the London and South East Premier. COVID ensued and football disappeared, although QPR did win the Capital Senior Cup in 2020-21 - their only honour under the new name. One successful application for promotion in 2021 later and QPR were moved up into the WNL - Tier 4 - where they have remained to this day. 4th has been their highest finish - in the 21/22 season that saw Boro’ relegated and the same happened to Hounslow, who folded the following season when the Division 1 South East ended with 10 teams. Last season, QPR finished 6th but with the best goal difference since their renaming.

Head to Head

Despite only one season where the two teams could face off, there have been three matches played out. The 21/22 season saw Boro’ defeated heavily away from home in the first game of the season as two goals from Demi Edwards helped hit Boro’ for six. The first game in November saw Boro’ defeated again, despite Hannah Savage netting for Stevenage, as QPR knocked Boro’ out of the WNL Plate at the first round. The last game between these two sides was also the last of the season. Boro’ knew that relegation was confirmed and yet produced a better performance, drawing the game with goals from Jodie Bellinger and Holly Greenwood.

Team News

QPR brought in a South West goal machine in Shannon Albuery from Moneyfields and she sits as the club’s top goalscorer so far this season. Another name to look out for would be Ellie Searle, the only remaining player on the books who played for QPR in the aforementioned head to heads and the R’s Player of the Month for September. Jess Leach was voted Player of the Match against Bognor Regis in the FA Cup, topping off her performance with a late goal from a free kick. Emily Donovan, Lauren Amerena, Nicole Barrett and Taylor Bell are also high up on the list of contention having played 8 games this season.

Boro’ will likely be looking to their two top goalscorers in Sarah Wiltshire and Olivia Oshodi to try and trouble the Rangers back line. Amy Makewell is the only Boro’ player to have played in 2021/22 with Hannah Savage away, but she is unavailable for the weekend. Oshodi is in line for her 10th appearance alongside Kiera Joseph, Teni Charles and Jada Deane. Those four players have played every game this season with Harley Carr, while Rosy Wodhams is set for a 70th club appearance and Rebecca Edge for her 90th! There could also be a first sighting of some new blood in the Boro’ ranks!

Tale of the Tape – The Season So Far

QPR

QPR, as mentioned before, have never finished higher than 4th in this division but are currently sat in 2nd with twelve points from a possible fifteen. The season began well with a win over Luton Town thanks to a Jess Leach goal, but the following week saw their only league defeat so far as Actonians won 3-0. August ended with another single goal win, this time a stoppage time winner from Nicole Barrett to defeat MK Dons. September began with two WNL Cup wins against Ascot United and Fulham and six different goalscorers over the two games, including a first for Shannon Albuery. They then defeated the Kent representatives 5-0 on aggregate as they dispatched Dartford and Chatham. September ended with an 8 goal thriller in the WNL Cup as Actonians defeated Rangers by scoring 5 of the eight goals and a red card for QPR’s Emily Donovan just as Albuery had brought the score back to 2-1 would not have helped matters. This month, QPR advanced to the Women’s FA Cup first round proper as they beat Bognor Regis to book a match with Lewes in a fortnight’s time. Rangers also announced Ross Bennett as the new man in charge after replacing Karl Watson who left his post after joining from Moneyfields during the summer.

Stevenage

Boro’ go into this game on the back of a 4 game losing streak, a run not seen since the 21/22 season when Enfield, Billericay, AFC Wimbledon and Harlow Town all defeated Stevenage. That season began with a 5 match losing streak, started by QPR and Boro’ will be looking to make QPR the end of the current run of poor results. The 4 match streak comes off the back of a 4 match unbeaten streak where Cambridge United, Luton and Dartford were all dispatched and a draw with Chatham was thrown into the mix. There is no doubt it has been a difficult reintroduction to tier 4 for Boro’ but there are still fifty-one points to play for and we know that Boro’ will fight for every single one of them.
