This painting is my tribute to all the working cowboys I've had the privileged to know throughout my lifetime. They're a rugged bunch, vastly underpaid, but I've been proud to call them my friends and I was proud to be one.

Every young boy that grows up on a ranch thinks that he's a good hand. I know I did. I'm sure I got in the way more than I helped, but nobody was happier cowboying than I was. I learned something valuable while doing this painting. Never paint a plaid shirt!

There's nothing better than being in high country in the fall of the year. Jeanne and I try to make our way into the mountains when the aspens are singing. Red River, New Mexico and Ridgeway, Colorado are two of our favorite destinations.

This cowboy has just filled his canteen in this cold mountain stream. I hope he pauses long enough to enjoy the beauty that surrounds him. The model for this painting was my dear friend Shannon Brooks.

It's a good thing this cowboy has his carbine ready. It looks like it's going to be a long day. I tried to let y'all know by the title that he'll fend them off at least until the sun goes down. This is a favorite type painting for me, where you the viewer get to imagine the outcome. This painting has a back-story, as all of mine do, but I'll let you write your own.
