Wood has long been appreciated in interiors for its natural beauty and aesthetically warming properties, and this is as prevalent today as it’s ever been. Modern interiors that are characterised by simple lines and minimalist layouts perhaps stand to gain the most from infusions of gorgeous wood grains, and from the rich tonal element they bring. Cool concrete decor can be counteracted with tiny amounts of timber, and basic white walls transformed with a flash of golden oak. These four home designs showcase wooden decor and accents in a contemporary translation of stylish slatted panels, designer furniture pieces, modern kitchens, unique feature wall ideas and bespoke storage installations, plus smooth herringbone and chevron floors.

Natural and neutral, this interior is a calming blend of solid oak elements and beige concrete expanses. Pebble grey textiles introduce a cooler tone into the mix, and help to crisply define the lounge area from the rest of the room.

A variation of the mid century modern classic Zig Zag-chair by Gerrit Rietveld rests by a TV wall that divides the lounge from the neighbouring kitchen. The room divider also forms a contemporary mantelpiece for a modern linear fireplace.

The house also boasts its own 75-foot long heated lap pool, which has a stunning suspended glass bottom design and exceptional Gore Range views. There are more than 6,500 square feet of outdoor heated decks spread across different levels. Inside of the private holiday home there are 6 bedrooms, 7 full bathrooms, 2 half baths, a spa with a waterfall, and a freestanding elevator with a glass ceiling.

In the bedroom, a creamy bedstead matches pristinely with end of bed seating. A white marble fireplace climbs behind a freestanding black hearth design. Clerestory windows give the bedroom a fantastically light and airy appeal that feels close to nature.

The bedroom opens out onto its very own terrace seating area.

Luxury abounds in the bathroom, where bookmatched marble slabs push along an extensive wall. Custom cut glass builds a crystal clear enclosure so that even the shower has an enviable view.

Shelves emerge from the marble wall beside the bathtub. A wood slatted panel warms this area of the layout, where a sliver of mirror in the corner makes the room appear as though it goes on and on. The vanity shelf cuts deep into the window sill, cantilevered over its edge. This situation of the countertop creates a playful impression that it was effortlessly cut and flipped down out of the window reveal itself.

The grey veined white marble looks just like the snowy rock face beyond the window panes. Chrome fixtures blend easily with the grey accents.

In another bathroom scheme, a water droplet-style faucet pools into a unique bathroom sink.

The compact sofa can be wheeled on its castors right underneath the dining table, making more sitting space around it for up to five dinner guests. A set of glass dining pendant lights give it formal adornment.

The mint colour accent threads through the studio in various forms.

A unique ceiling fan cools the compact area.

What appears as a TV unit actually opens up to reveal a utility cupboard, complete with drying racks and an ironing board.

When not in use at the dining table, the two extra chairs are repositioned at the double home workspace. The double Murphy bed shuts away into a simple white closet.

Hot Multicolour Accents & Cool Concrete Interiors

Colour bleeds from artwork into the interiors of these São Paulo homes, pooling into accent furniture, upholstery and decor. While there is emphasis on art toys, figurines, modern sculpture and wall art, the interiors have become living masterpieces in their own right. The blaze of hot colour accents is cooled with raw concrete. A sobering grey backdrop prevents the riot of multicolour from appearing childish or circus-like, and instils a sophisticated thread of cohesivity. Each home has been expertly designed by Guilherme Torres to be both fun and fierce, youthful yet structured. Layouts are skillfully curated to let each artful piece of design to have its moment to shine.

The first interior is a 248 square metre property with an open plan living area. Bright works of modern art are hung around the perimeter of the white and concrete room, with art toys and sculpture jostling through the middle ground.

The decorative screen in the living room becomes an illuminating feature with a light box placed behind it.

A large kitchen and dining area open up at the back of the room, where decorative vases and bold blue dining chairs push colour into more subdued surroundings.

A tufted sofa puts a block of plum purple along the edge of the lounge. A table lamp bursts onto the scene with a big bubble of orange.

The dining room chandelier is a sculptural piece in itself, made out of paper note pages.

Hourglass planters align with a structural column to form a subtle room divide between a sitting area and the kitchen. A red chaise lounge and red kitchen bar stools build colour cohesivity.

Different coloured decorative vases add vibrancy to the grey dining table and the dining area’s raw concrete decor.

Whimsical wall art pops out from every corner of the home.

Even the bathroom gains a piece of fun sculpture and colourful accessories.

Our next interior is a much smaller home, measuring 86 square metres. A unique recessed light track design snakes up the concrete wall and ceiling, making the industrial grey room appear lighter and larger.

There’s not a lot of space for rotating on the Magis Spun chair, but it looks cool at the base of the light track and art wall.

A coffee table book collection scatters more colour into the grey based living room. A characterful Hanno the Gorilla toy has taken up residence on a copy of Dot Dot Dash!, a designer toy and character art book.

Chrome sculpture makes its way onto a bar tray on the kitchen countertop.

Under cabinet lighting highlights the sheen of a chrome kitchen faucet.

Concrete walls are left raw in the bathroom too.

Another light strip feature cuts up through the concrete, burning brightly by a wall mirror.

This 350 square metre house has a wonderfully open and airy feel thanks to huge windows that surround the living room on all sides. A red lounge chair set makes rich colour contrast with the lush green garden views through the glass. A modern floor lamp gives the lounge layout some height.

A small side table and a set of poufs bring orange accents into the lounge, which make perfect companions to the cooler teal hue across the upholstered sofa and a teal dining room pendant light in the background.

The rectangle dining table is concrete to match the floor. Wooden Wishbone chairs vibe with the plant life outside of the dining room’s picture window.

Copper pendant lights line up along a reading nook, where a custom concrete bench has been cast to include book storage in its base.

A concrete staircase climbs between floors, lit by LED stair lights.

At the top of the staircase we find ourselves in a more family oriented, kid friendly, living room. Walls of colourful storage volumes work through the entire rainbow.

Thanks to the vivid colours of the custom furniture, bright children’s toys meld easily with the decor. Green accent chairs pull colour into the centre of the room, along with brightly printed scatter cushions.

A green rug sweeps beneath a stylish wooden console table and a matching Cherner armchair.

Yellow bathroom furniture shines cheerfully inside an all concrete bathroom.

The tiles that coat the dining room feature wall are at play on the home exterior too, making a welcoming entrance.

Our final tour is a 400 square metre home that employs dark wood tone to anchor fanciful artwork and accent pieces.

Wood panelling has also been used to recess the TV and speakers, along with associated wiring. A glass vase of greenery makes a fresh addition to the wall of dark wood grain.

Other walls remain raw concrete. Red and orange accents heat up the industrial aesthetic.

Yellow lounge chairs lighten up the living room, whilst aqua blue chairs lift a darkly panelled dining room.

Sculptures and art books sit atop a contemporary concrete fireplace.

A more formal dining area seats eight guests around a solid wood table. Tangerine dining chairs heat up the pale room palette.

Real tangerines add a natural accent inside the modern fruit bowl centrepiece.

A patchwork pouf rolls in a ball of pattern and colour.

Decorative vases perfectly match an aqua blue console.

The bedroom palette is completely subdued in contrast to the living areas, to promote complete calm and rest.

This idyllic Beverly Hills retreat is a 6,533 square foot single story new-build in the prestigious Trousdale Estates. The house beds onto the green hillside, where a backyard trail leads to a sweet vantage point with city views. It has been thoughtfully created in organic finishes and clean lines to build an iconic piece of Beverly Hills style. The house boasts five beautiful bedrooms, and six and a half bathrooms. Amenities include a home theater, gym, laundry room, a VRV system for independent room temps, a 45 foot swimming pool, and an outdoor bar area. Each of the main rooms spill out onto the terrace, giving the home a true indoor-outdoor connection.

The luxury living room showcases a generous 11.5 foot high ceiling. Walnut panels warmly clad all of the walls.

A huge modern sofa with integrated side tables draws an L-shaped arrangement around the lounge. Custom bookcases give the room a stylish homey feel, stacked with tomes and sculptural decor.

Wide views of the green hillside colour the living room with vivacious natural hues.

Tan poufs meld with the tone of the wood panelled walls, and up the visual temperature of the grey lounge layout.

Pops of red enter the predominantly grey room through accent cushions on the sofa. These simple additions could be switched out to suit the season or the occasion.

Natural sunlight rushes in through an entire wall of retractable glass doors.

A modern chaise lounge brings unique style to a second sitting area in the grande open floor plan. Matching grey area rugs have been employed as a zoning technique, making each gathering of furniture into its own island.

Two swivel chairs sit at the opposite side of the modern fireplace. A wet bar and wine storage room span out behind.

A third sitting area unfolds on the opposite side of the double aspect Basaltina fireplace. A huge piece of modern art brings uplifting colour to the neutral decor scheme.

Different lounge furniture and unique coffee tables fashion each lounge layout, giving each area its own identity. Here, a small side table stands out in a pop of gold, as though punctuating the run of sitting areas before a formal dining room unfolds at the back.

Black modern dining chairs give the dining area weight and presence in the large open room.

A modern fruit bowl decorates the dining table with an artistic sculptural presence. A huge piece of typographic art adorns a blank wall between the kitchen and the terrace bar.

A swimming pool cuts along one side of the outdoor living area, which places it right at the foot of the master bedroom’s glass wall.

Pendant lights have been avoided so as not to interfere with the peaceful hillside view. Autumn Sky limestone floors help visually connect the indoor and outdoor living spaces through similar tone.

A large kitchen with an impressive island is backed by unique open kitchen shelving. A Stellar White stone backsplash complements the flooring, and makes a calming colour unity with the walnut cabinetry.

White stone floods the main countertop and wraps the kitchen island. Miele appliances integrate into a wall of floor to ceiling units.

The outward facing island allows the chef to interact with the room, and makes a breakfast bar for four diners along its outer edge.

Unique bedside table lamps burn in the master suite, adding to the orange accent colour casually at play in the bed throw.

The striking poolside situation adds tremendously to the luxury feel of the bedroom.

A small lounge area sits snug by the bedroom fireplace and TV.

The same type of grey rug as the living room pads the floor of the bedroom, creating smooth cohesion.

The cohesive interior decor seems all the more important from the outdoor living space, where each volume is viewable as one whole.

The next bedroom we visit is a smaller space, though still generously proportioned. Artwork replaces the poolside view here, hung over a slimline console table and tufted pouf.

Another silver grey rug softens the floor.

Clerestory windows bring light into rooms toward the front of the house to maintain privacy.

Black paintwork aptly darkens down the walls of the home theatre.

Wall-to-wall mirrors serve a practical purpose during workouts in the home gym.

The master bedroom suite has twin bathrooms, which are decorated in white Calcutta Bella and black Grigio Carnico stone.

Swathes of shining stone covers walls and custom shower enclosures.

A glamorous freestanding bathtub looks perfect for a luxurious bubbly soak.

An outdoor planter provides green views via the huge shower cubicle. An outdoor screen behind the planter keeps the bathroom private from prying eyes.
