Latin American carrier LATAM was, some years ago, a member of the oneworld airline alliance along with British Airways and Iberia. It resigned in 2020 after Delta Air Lines took a stake in the carrier, although the expected entry into the SkyTeam alliance never materialised.

Iberia and British Airways decided to retain partnerships with LATAM because of the access it gives to Latin America.

Iberia has now deepened its relationship and is allowing you to earn elite points towards status in Iberia Club when flying LATAM.

Two changes kicked in from 1st February.

The key one for HfP readers is that LATAM flights (with an LA flight number) between Europe and Latin America now qualify for elite points (tier points) in Iberia Club.

You do not earn elite points for stand-alone regional flights on LATAM. It isn’t clear if connecting flights on the same itinerary as a European flight will count.

Iberia has published this table showing the elite points you can earn. It is a little odd because – if only long-haul flights count – most of it is irrelevant:

For many people, earning status in Iberia Club is easier than earning status in The British Airways Club.

If you are taking occasional flights on LATAM from Europe (not necessarily Spain) on LATAM, Iberia Club may now be the right place to credit them. It will make earning Iberia Club status even easier.

Elite status in Iberia Club gets you virtually the same benefits when flying BA as having status in The British Airways Club.

You will also earn Avios in Iberia Club when flying on LATAM, which you can move across to The British Airways Club by linking your accounts using the guidance here.

This isn’t new. What IS new is that there is now an elite status bonus awarded on top.

Get full Iberia status recognition

The final element of the expanded partnership between the two carriers is full elite recognition.

If you have elite status in Iberia Club, you should now get status benefits when flying with LATAM.

Lounge access, priority boarding, extra baggage allowance, fast track …. it should all be available to you.
