Australia has an opportunity to lead the next phase of transport innovation, as artificial intelligence (AI) begins to move from theory into daily operations across freight, road safety and mobility systems.

That opportunity is taking shape, following the opening of the Geotab-Swinburne Transport Innovation Hub at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne earlier this year.

The Hub has been established to advance AI-powered mobility and transport research in Australia, bringing together industry, academia and government bodies to explore the future of connected transport, road safety, sustainability and electric vehicle (EV) adoption.

For Geotab Founder and Chief Executive Officer Neil Cawse, the significance of the initiative lies less in the announcement itself and more in how it has been brought together.

Having worked with universities globally, he sees something distinct in the Australian approach that breaks down silos between research, government bodies and industry.

“I was very impressed overall,” Neil says. “We have relationships with many universities, like Georgia Tech, as well as Canadian, US and European universities, but this is unique.

“What really stood out was how this hub brought together industry, government bodies, Geotab and academia in one place. I haven’t seen that done in the same way at other universities.”

That integration reflects a more practical approach to research, focused on real-world outcomes.

At Swinburne, the focus is on bridging ideas with execution, a model Neil believes is essential as the sector becomes more data driven.

“We’re a company that thrives on collaboration,” he says. “When we saw the opportunity, we said ‘let’s talk about it and see what we can do’. What I find interesting about Swinburne is that it’s very pragmatic and practical. It’s not academia for academia’s sake, but research that is focused on delivering real outcomes and commercial applications.”

He says this emphasis on practical outcomes is already influencing the direction of research at the hub. Early work is focused on safety and system visibility, including understanding driver behaviour and improving how transport networks are visualised.

The work looks at transport as a broader system, rather than in isolated parts.

“There are a number of interesting areas around safety,” Neil says.

“For example, understanding the impacts of alcohol and how we can detect it using camera systems and driving behaviour. At a broader level, transportation is a large and complex system and being able to visualise how it operates – where goods move, where congestion happens, where bottlenecks form – can unlock a whole range of improvements.”

The ability to map and interrogate these systems in real time is where AI is increasingly being applied to solve real-world transport challenges, Neil says. He adds that the real value lies in giving industry new ways to understand and act on data.

“AI has always been a passion of mine,” Neil says. “It’s amazing to see it coming to life now, especially in a way where we can actually apply it to solve real problems.

“These are real people’s lives, real work that needs to be done, real money that can be saved. The world runs on logistics – every product, every piece of food, every medicine – and seeing how AI can transform that is incredibly exciting.”

He says this shift is also changing how innovation itself is developed. The research hub sits in what Neil describes as “horizon three” – focused on challenges three to five years out –where the role of universities is to support industry and explore further challenges.

“Partnerships with universities are about thinking beyond today,” he says.

“You have horizon one, which is what customers need right now, and horizon two, which is what they’ll need soon. But horizon three is about what’s coming three to five years from now. Universities are a great way to explore that future.

“It’s also incredibly valuable to work with students, because they don’t see limitations in the same way. They have energy, creativity and a desire to solve big problems.”

That long-term lens is critical as Australia navigates its own position in the global transport market. While there are areas of strength, particularly in regulation and heavy vehicle policy, Neil sees clear gaps in adoption that must be addressed if the country is to play a stronger role in the development of AI-enabled transport.

“The Australian market is a bit of a mixed bag,” he says. “In some areas, it’s quite advanced, particularly in regulation and heavy vehicle thinking. In other areas, such as telematics adoption and access to data, it is behind.

“There is strong enthusiasm from government bodies to use data to make better decisions, but in some cases that data is not yet fully available.”

Neil says closing that gap will be important for improving safety, efficiency and sustainability and the widespread rollout of telematics is one of the most immediate and achievable steps.

“There’s no reason every vehicle on the road shouldn’t have telematics,” he says. “The data can be used to understand safety risks, improve infrastructure planning and optimise how cities function.

“We can design better transport systems if we know how people and freight are moving.”

From there, the next wave of transformation is already forming. Electrification, autonomy and energy resilience are starting to change how transport systems are powered, operated and governed. While these shifts are often discussed in isolation, Neil sees them as interconnected forces.

“Electrification is a big one,” he says. “Climate change is part of it, but energy independence is just as important. Australia has strong potential to generate its own energy through renewables, and that reduces reliance on imported fuels. That’s a major strategic advantage that shouldn’t be overlooked.”

At the same time, advances in autonomous technology are accelerating faster than many expected, with real-world deployments already demonstrating viability at scale. The implications for logistics, and the workforce that supports it, will be significant.

“Autonomy is no longer theoretical,” Neil says. “If you’ve experienced services like Waymo (an autonomous driving technology company), you realise it’s real and it works. As the cost comes down, adoption will accelerate quickly.

“It won’t be long before automation starts to reshape logistics and trucking in a meaningful way.”

Against this backdrop, initiatives like the Geotab-Swinburne Transport Innovation Hub begin to take on a broader significance. They are building the ecosystem needed to support new technology connecting talent, ideas and industry capability in a way that keeps pace with global change.

“We measure success based on impact,” Neil says. “Telematics has proven its value over and over again in improving safety, reducing costs and supporting sustainability.

“I would like to see more organisations adopting these tools, because the benefits are clear.”
