While some residents may have greater flexibility to relocate or shelter safely, low-wage migrant workers frequently face limited options. For many, the challenge is not only the crisis itself. It is the lack of preparation, access to information, and the ability to act independently when conditions suddenly change.

A Worker’s Experience During Crisis
One migrant worker who recently returned home described the uncertainty he experienced during a period of regional tension. He recalled receiving limited warnings and relying largely on mobile phone notifications for updates.

“There were no sirens,” he explained. “We would only receive notifications on our phones, often too late to respond effectively.”

MVC members maintained awareness activities, monitored migration patterns, and responded to concerns raised by community members. This continuity matters because migration is not a single event. It is an ongoing process that affects families, communities, and workers over time. Community-based systems can help ensure that migration decisions are informed by knowledge rather than urgency or misinformation.

Migrant workers contribute significantly to economies across borders, yet they may have limited control over the systems that shape their safety during emergencies.
