... But I was definitely fading fast at the end and just couldn't keep the pace below 1:50 which meant the classic U-curve piece with high-effort/at-pace effort/high-effort just didn't happen. Having said that of course I have no way of knowing if that could have given a better result.

There was a discussion on C2 Forum a little while ago where people who ought to know suggested that a fly & die was the way to go for a 1k as well as a 500, while I can't remember where I saw it, but someone else stated that starting with 10 hard strokes had helped them to a 2k PB supporting the hard start, so maybe your pacing was better than you thought (although too painf...
