Might be a dumb question but I'm totally not in the know about these black rubber strips. Would it be to stop radiator spray or is it just a cushion?

I've been chasing a detonation issue with my car, for a while now. Previous owner was also, judging my his receipts.
Could this have contributed to the problem? Timing gear has keyways for 4A, 4R, and 1R. I'd think 1R would make sense, but HOPING it's wrong because I'm otherwise out of ideas of why the engine detonates.
