India’s markets have modernised rapidly—retail participation has surged, T+1 settlement is live, regulators are active, and electronic trading now represents a significant share of institutional flow.

FIX as a Foundational Opportunity: At a recent panel discussion held at the FIX India Conference 2026 in Mumbai, Prashant Kedia (Electronic Sales Trader – Vice President, Jefferies India) moderated the conversation with expert panelists; Brandon “Rym” DeCoster (Product Management Team Leader, Bloomberg), Munish Gautam (Global Head of Trading Platforms, Product Management, Broadridge), Dheeraj Khurana (Workflow Technology Coverage, Virtu Financial), Gordon Niamatali (CEO, Authentic Indication), and Sandeep Sabnani (Product Strategy and Growth, Equities, ION Markets). Representing OMS/EMS providers, liquidity platforms, analytics firms, brokers, and infrastructure providers, the panel shared a consistent message: India has the tools. The real opportunity is integrating them into a coherent ecosystem. At the centre of that ecosystem sits the FIX protocol.

The Real Gap: Systems vs. Tools: Panelists agreed that India has access to world-class OMSs, EMSs, algorithms and analytics. The gap when compared to more mature markets is not technology availability—it is workflow design. In global markets, execution is engineered end-to-end:
• Buy-side intent
• Routing and algo selection
• Liquidity discovery
• Compliance checks
• Allocations and confirmations
• Settlement and post-trade analysis

These are designed as one connected workflow. In India, many firms still operate collections of tools that work well individually but are not fully integrated. As volumes grow—especially during index rebalances or high-volatility days—fragmentation becomes operational risk.

FIX is what connects those tools into a system. A central FIX engine allows firms to link OMS, EMS, algos, post-trade systems and reporting infrastructure through standardized messaging. Instead of building point-to-point integrations every time a new system is added, firms maintain one consistent communication layer.
One panelist put it simply: firms rarely regret overinvesting in FIX infrastructure—but often regret underinvesting.

Operational Alpha Is Real Alpha: The discussion moved beyond “trading alpha.” Several speakers stressed operational alpha—the performance gained by reducing friction across workflows. Examples raised of potential pinch points included:
• Thousands of allocations during MSCI or FTSE rebalances
• T+1 settlement compressing timelines
• Increased algo usage driving higher order counts
• Cross-asset liquidity interactions (cash, futures, ETFs)

If post-trade processes are slow or disconnected, capital is tied up longer. Settlement risk increases. Reconciliation delays accumulate. Integrated FIX workflows help:
• Automate allocations & confirmations
• Create synchronized audit trails
• Reduce breaks and manual intervention
• Free up capital faster
In a T+1 world, post-trade is not back office—it is performance infrastructure.

Algo Wheels and Intelligent Automation: Global buy-side usage of algo wheels is now above 40% and continues to grow, with domestic adoption in India remaining lower but growing quickly. Panelists clarified that modern algo wheels are not just broker rotation tools. Today they can:
• Adjust dynamically using TCA
• Target specific liquidity sessions (e.g., closing auctions)
• Incorporate sector, urgency, and stock-level logic
• Manage commission and broker preferences

But automation only works if systems are connected. As markets evolve—closing auctions, new sessions, advanced liquidity models—OMSs, EMSs and trading platforms will change.

A strong FIX backbone allows firms to add or remove systems without disrupting their architecture. This flexibility becomes critical in fast-moving markets.

Liquidity Discovery – From Broadcast to Secure Search: Information leakage remains a major institutional concern. The panel discussed how encrypted intention-driven liquidity models differ from traditional IOIs. Traditional IOIs broadcast liquidity and risk leakage. Encrypted models only reveal information upon confirmed match and ensure that unmatched interest is never visible. Panelists stressed three practical points:
1. Quality measurement matters—firms must track which IOIs convert and which do not.
2. Structured data is essential—FIX messages already capture traditional IOIs, executions, and post-trade events.
3. Encrypted IOIs improve execution quality—by structurally eliminating the dissemination of intention pre-trade
Regardless of model, earlier-stage liquidity discovery provides an improved foundation for downstream execution.

Compliance Embedded by Design: India’s regulatory direction is clear: greater transparency, algo tagging, OTR monitoring, and auditability. Panelists emphasized that compliance should not be layered on after the fact. It should be embedded into workflows from the start. FIX logs provide:
• Timestamped, synchronized records between counterparties
• Verifiable order lifecycle history
• Clear audit trails for investigations

If something goes wrong, regulators can reconstruct events using FIX logs from both sides of the trade. Several speakers stressed that regulators seek transparency, not confrontation. A standardized FIX framework creates the opportunity of a shared language between firms and regulators, improving trust and reducing ambiguity.

Closing Auctions – A Practical Workflow Challenge: The introduction of closing auctions highlights how market structure modernization impacts workflow design. Practical questions raised included:
• When should participation begin?
• How much volume should be reserved for the close?
• How should imbalance data be handled?
• How should auction logic interact with VWAP strategies?

These decisions require real-time updates and cross-system coordination. FIX enables consistent order status messaging, algo updates, and audit tracking across these sessions. Without structured connectivity, closing auctions create operational strain. With it, they become another manageable liquidity source.

AI – Decision Support, Not Decision Replacement: AI was widely discussed, but with caution. In regulated markets, explainability matters. Panelists broadly agreed that AI making execution decisions autonomously remains challenging from a regulatory perspective.
Where AI adds immediate value:
• Operational exception management
• Intelligent alerting (reducing noise)
• Post-trade outcome analysis
• Workflow efficiency

The key insight: AI depends on clean, structured data. FIX provides exactly that. Firms investing in FIX today are effectively preparing their data foundation for future AI deployment.

What Should Be Prioritized? Across the discussion between the industry experts on the panel, three practical priorities emerged:
1. Invest in a stable FIX infrastructure
2. Design execution as an end-to-end system
3. Embed compliance and post-trade into core workflows
India has a unique opportunity. Unlike some older markets that built trading first and fixed operations later, India can modernize both simultaneously.

The panel’s message was clear: sustainable alpha will not only come from faster algos or smarter routing. It will come from cohesive systems, clean data, operational strength—and a FIX architecture that connects everything together.
