I HAVE been looking into the perfect tent to take camping with my family of four. I wanted something that felt comfortable and private. With our hands being full with the kids, an easy-to-set-up construction is something that I hold in high value, giving more time to enjoy the joys of the outdoors. Lastly, I wanted something that would not end up in landfill in 2-3 years’ time, strong enough to withstand the Aussie outdoors.

I have been testing the Homecamp “cabin” tent in a range of conditions and have been very impressed with how functional this product is. This is not a tent that you are going to throw on your back and hike into the backcountry with. This is a solid unit that could easily be used as a long-term structure. The tent on its own is 22kg and with all the bells and whistles over 30kg. This tent is for camping in close proximity to your car. A 4WDers’ dream or family tourers’ staple that stays in the family until the kids grow old.

I was initially worried that the weight of the tent would cause issues for the setup and pack-down timing. I was pleased that the setup and packdown was achievable on my own. Homecamp has a setup video that is step-by-step and clearly demonstrates every step to support your success. The first time took me 10 minutes to get the tent up, and every time since has become more streamlined. The bag easily stashes the tent, which is a rare fit in the camping world.

The design of this tent incorporates a minimalistic approach with an old-school natural aesthetic. The A-frame style setup has a basic cross pole with two vertical supports. The poles are made from 25 mm hard anodised aluminium, which also boasts corrosion-resistant properties. The canvas lays out from the centre lines and is tensioned with gyropes. The pegs that hold the ropes and base of the tent are unprecedentedly robust; they aren’t going to bend out. I’d recommend a hammer to bash them in securely.

I was very impressed with the integrity of the structure. In high wind, the tent was heavy-duty enough that it did not flap about all night, creating unnecessary noise. I also wasn’t worried that it would buckle; the angle of the sides is aerodynamic and doesn’t grab the wind like a sail.

Homecamp uses a proprietary 285 GSM cotton poly canvas for the walls and roof. The quality of the canvas used is a premium grade. Highly durable material whilst also breathable, taking away the claustrophobic feeling. The shell is strong enough to act as a considerable insulation layer from the elements. I was amazed at how well it blacked out the sun. So for anyone looking to sleep in on a camping trip, you’re in for a treat. For my family, we closed the vents and doors for our newborn’s day naps to ensure there was no premature stirring.

I tend to treat my canvas outdoor equipment with beeswax every 6-12 months depending on the frequency of use. Out of the box, the cabin beaded raindrops on the surface of the canvas, and they rolled off like water off a duck’s back. The beeswax can bolster the longevity of the weatherproofing.

The floor is a heavy-duty 550 GSM ripstop PVC sewn in as a bathtub groundsheet with a 10 centimetre raised wall which reliably keeps out surface water and is easy to hose clean after muddy days.

Fly screen and ventilation

The tent has extra large double doors front and back, each fitted with separate mesh doors made from a fine black mosquito netting. The mesh is strong and fine enough to block midges and mosquitoes while still allowing excellent airflow when the canvas doors are open. Two extra large side windows also include mesh panels so you can open up opposite sides for true cross ventilation. The combination of the breathable canvas and full mesh ventilation keeps the interior comfortable without compromising insect protection. During the day we had all the doors open, the kids were running a muck between indoors and outdoors and absolutely loved the novelty.

Practical features that matter

Interior space is generous. Set up the tent, and you get a clear open area with a two metre apex height that lets adults stand and move around easily. Although marketed as a five- to six-person tent, it will sleep more at a pinch, especially with children and compact gear layouts. Built-in pockets, including two large pockets and a detachable pocket that clips to the ridge pole, keep small items organised. A separate spares bag includes a floor patch and canvas repair patch, which is practical for long trips. The minimalist approach provides a blank canvas with plenty of space for you to configure.

For cold weather, the tent is hot tent ready with a fire-resistant panel and integrated stove jack. Pairing a small or medium wood stove with the correct accessories lets you use the cabin tent safely for cosy nights, which extends the camping season. I didn’t get to try out the indoor fireplace, but with this addition you’re headed into glamping glory.

Accessories

There are a bunch of accessories that can enhance your experience with the ‘cabin’ tent in various contexts. I think that the footprint is an essential addition. It provides an extra layer of insulation from the cold ground and protection to the tent base. Less mess ends up on the tent when folding after use.

If we were setting up the Cabin tent for more than a few days or if there was wet weather predicted, we threw the storm fly over the top as an extra precaution for rain. I personally think that the tent will hold up on its own, unless you were faced with regular downpours. The universal awning was a great addition, providing an extra sheltered space for cooking, parking up with a stubby, rigging tackle or alfresco dining.

I am a big fan of my Homecamp ‘Cabin’ tent. The eyes of other campers can’t hide the jealousy as they walk past. It is the sort of tent that once pitched brings out a sense of pride, like you are a digger back in the day, out in the sticks and paving the way…

Homecamp is an Australian company that has created a fantastic product for Australian conditions and lifestyles. I am certain that there is a style of tent suited to your needs. I think the price is reasonable and a solid long-term investment.
