The roads of Islamabad and Rawalpindi are witnessing a quiet transformation. At a time when rising fuel prices are putting increasing pressure on household budgets and concerns over air pollution are growing, electric vehicles are gradually emerging as a practical alternative to conventional petrol and diesel transport. What was once considered a niche choice is now becoming increasingly visible on the roads, particularly among students, office workers, delivery riders and urban families.
From electric bikes and scooters to cars and rickshaws, electric mobility is beginning to change the way people travel in the twin cities. The reasons are not difficult to understand. For ordinary citizens already struggling with the rising cost of living, the prospect of dramatically reducing monthly fuel expenditure is a powerful incentive.
The experience of local users reflects this growing attraction. Residents who have shifted to electric bikes say their monthly charging expenses are only a fraction of what they previously spent on petrol. Charging a vehicle at home, particularly overnight, offers another advantage: users do not have to visit petrol stations regularly or worry about sudden increases in fuel prices.
Delivery riders and other people whose livelihoods depend on daily travel have an even stronger financial reason to make the switch. For them, fuel is one of the biggest operating expenses. An electric bike can substantially reduce running costs, allowing riders to retain a greater portion of their earnings. In a difficult economic environment, this is not merely a matter of convenience; it can directly improve a family’s financial position.
Electric cars are also attracting urban motorists who value comfort and convenience. For many users, the convenience of charging at home and avoiding frequent visits to petrol stations is an important advantage.
However, the growing popularity of EVs should not lead to complacency. Pakistan still faces significant challenges before electric mobility can become a genuinely mass-market solution. High purchase prices remain a major barrier for middle- and lower-income families. Concerns about battery life, replacement costs and resale value also discourage potential buyers.
The availability of charging infrastructure is another critical issue. While charging stations are increasingly appearing at fuel stations and commercial locations in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, a wider and more reliable network is essential if consumers are to develop confidence in electric transport. Charging facilities should be expanded not only in major commercial centres but also along highways, residential areas and major commuting routes.
The government can play a decisive role in this transition. Affordable financing and installment schemes, incentives for local manufacturing, lower duties on essential EV components and a clear long-term electric mobility policy could make these vehicles accessible to a much larger section of society.
