Humanities Series: Discovering the Celtic World in Nebraska

With the defeat of the ancient tribes of Gaul by Julius Caesar, the Celtic people were forced to the edges of the known world in Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Britain. Charles Real takes listeners on an 8,000-year journey that explores the origins and culture of the Celts and how the sons and daughters of the Celtic fringe influenced place names, early pioneers and settlers on Nebraska’s prairies and in its river valleys.

The Youth Library Council (TLC) offers teens ages 13 to 18 from all over Adams County the opportunity to have input in the way the Hastings Public Library serves teens.

What will you do on YLC?

• Attend and participate in the monthly YLC meetings.
• Brainstorm ways the library can better serve teens and come to meetings prepared to share those ideas.
• Help promote the library.
• Be ambassadors in their community.
• Help plan programs just for teens at the library.

Mega Brain Kidz Club offers fun activities and challenges focused on STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. Learn while having fun and meeting new people every month!

Registration is required for Mega Brain Kidz Club. Participants must be a library card holder to join this program; if you do not have a library card, a parent's or guardian's can be substituted. If you register for two programs, but do not attend the program without cancelling beforehand, you will be unable to participate in the next Mega Brain Kidz Club.

Candy Cane Hunt

It is rumored that Santa will be leaving candy canes around Chautauqua Park. Come join us as we search for hidden candy canes. There will be two age divisions; 0-5 and 6-10. Be sure to come at 2:00 PM as the hunt will start promptly. Please bring your own bag to put the candy canes in. Candy canes will be limited.

Want to try new spices, but don't know where to start? Have we got the club for you! 

HPL's Spice Club brings international flavors right to your kitchen with a new spice every month. Each kit includes a measured amount of spice, three recipes, and fact sheets with history and nutrition about the spice.

We'd love to know what you think of the spice! Tag us on Facebook or Instagram if you post one of your creations, or return the evaluation sheet to tell us what you think!

Registration is required for Spice Club; one kit per household limit for this program. Kits are available for pick up the first Friday of the month, and will be available for one week. Participants must be a library card holder to join this program. The kit is checked out to your library account for three weeks. If the tote bag is not returned, a fee of $5 will be charged to your account. If you register for two programs, but do not collect your kit within seven days, you will be unable to participate in the next Spice Club.
