Contactless payments have made shopping faster than ever, but scammers are finding new ways to misuse the same technology. A recent case in Michigan highlights how a simple tap on a phone can lead to an unexpected financial loss.

The incident has also drawn attention to a growing fraud method known as “ghost tapping,” which security experts say is becoming more common across the United States.

On June 27, a 29-year-old woman was shopping at a Walmart in a Detroit suburb when two young men, who appeared to be high school students, approached her, according to The Detroit Free Press. They said they were collecting donations to help fund college visits.

The woman agreed to contribute $50. She used the tap-to-pay feature on her iPhone to complete the payment. Everything appeared normal during the interaction, so she left the store without checking the transaction amount.

Later, she discovered that the payment processed was $1,000, not the agreed $50. She immediately reported the incident to police. At the time of the payment, she had not verified the amount displayed before tapping her phone.

The case has become one of the latest examples of a scam called “ghost tapping,” which continues to concern cybersecurity professionals.

What Is ‘Ghost Tapping’?

Ghost tapping is a payment scam that takes advantage of near-field communication (NFC) technology, the same wireless system used by contactless credit cards and mobile wallets.

In one version of the scam, a fraudster enters a much higher payment amount than the customer expects. The victim taps a phone or payment card without noticing the actual charge because the total may not be clearly displayed. In some cases, criminals also use fake payment terminals that closely resemble legitimate devices.

Another version requires no direct conversation at all. A scammer carrying an unauthorized payment device may move close enough to a phone or contactless payment card to attempt an unauthorized transaction. Crowded locations such as festivals, concerts, markets, and busy public spaces create opportunities for this type of fraud because people are often distracted.

According to Guidepoint Security, fraud claims linked to ghost tapping have increased 150% compared with last year, showing how quickly this method is spreading.

Why Experts Are Raising Awareness

Many contactless payments are completed in just seconds. That convenience also means people may pay less attention to the transaction details before approving a purchase.

Amy Nofziger, senior director of victim support for the AARP Fraud Watch Network, encouraged consumers to think about financial security the same way they think about personal safety while away from home.

“Just like we prepare ourselves with personal safety when we’re out in public, people need to prepare themselves for financial safety when we’re out in public,” Nofziger told The Detroit Free Press.

Her advice reflects a growing concern that scammers often depend on rushed decisions rather than technical sophistication.

Simple Ways to Reduce the Risk

A few practical habits can lower the chances of becoming a victim.

1. Check the payment amount before tapping: Always look at the final charge before you approve a payment. If someone asks for a donation or payment, check the amount they entered before tapping your device.

2. Turn on transaction alerts: Enable alerts from your bank or card provider. These notifications can help you spot unknown charges quickly and report them right away.

3. Protect your mobile device: Use Face ID, fingerprint locks, and strong passcodes on your phone. These security steps help keep your digital wallet safe from unauthorized access.

4. Review unknown charges: Do not ignore small or unfamiliar payments. Scammers may use small charges to test stolen payment details. Check your account often and report any suspicious activity.

5. Keep physical cards secure: Avoid placing contactless cards in open pockets or easy-to-reach areas. This reduces the chance of unwanted payment attempts.

6. Turn off tap-to-pay when not needed: Disable contactless payment features when you are not using them. This simple step can limit access to your digital wallet.

Nofziger also recommends preparing a polite but firm response when strangers ask for donations. A simple statement such as, “I do not give money to unknown organizations or people I don’t know,” can end the conversation without creating pressure to make an immediate payment.

Digital wallets and contactless cards remain safe payment methods when used carefully. Most fraudulent transactions happen because scammers create confusion or rely on people completing payments without checking the details.

Taking a few extra seconds to confirm the amount, keeping payment notifications active, and protecting contactless cards can significantly reduce the risk. As ghost tapping scams become more common, awareness remains one of the strongest tools for preventing unexpected financial losses.
